I think you could argue that King's second novel, SALEM'S LOT, has just that sort of open ending. King has mentioned that he was planning on writing a sequel but then changed his mind. The short story ONE FOR THE ROAD however is set in the town of Salem's Lot several years later and that answers the 'or is it' question with a resounding yes.

The trailer I got before the video started was for the DVD release of Fifty Shades Darker. I cannot escape it. On a totally different note, really enjoyed the review. Great work!
