The Script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - The Dom Reviews

Terrence talks about his likes and dislikes of the script for the Harry Potter stage performance. The Harry Potter adaptations may not have been very good but the play might do better.

I will admit that I read this play as I would any other. IE, I read the play as if I was designing the set or props. My degree is in theatre tech, so that is how I looked at the work. One thing I can tell you is the set designer had a field-day. There are dozens of different way to do the stuff required for the special effects with puppets being only one. Because of that, I really enjoyed the script, but I also never for a moment believed it to be cannon to the books or movies. As a playwright myself, I will be the first to say the story is shit and most of the characters need a good punch in the face. Ironically the only character I found really liking was Malfoy's kid.

An excellent review! This is just what I needed today. On top of the other logic and continuity errors you mentioned from the series (which were very well-listed), I think the idea of using a Time-Turner to actually change the past goes against the books series' logic. Contrary to popular belief, I thought Rowling firmly established in the third book that you CAN'T use the Time-Turner to change the past because the past is unchangeable. Any time you go back it just creates a Stable Time Loop that you can't break no matter how hard you try. So characters acting like the Time-Turner can change the past seems, to me, to be no better from them acting like prophecies have any power or meaning. That's just my personal nit-pick. Now that I've got that off my chest, great review.

But Terrence, did you not cry when you read the scene where Hagrid meets baby Harry for the first time?

That thing with the Dementors walking around in the crowd reminds me of a Lord of the Rings play I saw as a kid where the Nazgul were walking around in the crowd at some point. Scared the crap out of me. I can testify that it's quite effective.

Ok, theory: the dudes who wrote it are secret wizards. The do know Ludo Bagman, know dementors are real and incorporated magic into the stage directions.
