Thanks for posting it again. I only have one request: could you, if you ever again show pictures of spiders (or other strongly phobic images), perhaps give a little warning?

Thank you for doing this Lost in Adaptation! Howl’s Moving Castle is one of my favorite books of all time. I liked the movie but I’m partial to the book (probably because I read it before watching the movie).

I've always been an absolute fan for both the book and the movie, separately. The book is exceedingly hard to keep in mind when you're watching the film, because the magnificence almost makes you forget the plot points of the book entirely. Funny enough, the second book in the series, "Castle in the Sky" shares a similar title to another movie of Ghibli, but that one's not an adaptation.

Hello GORGEOUS ! LOVELY film (movie) ! thank you for sharing this review ! :*

Yeeeees! I loved the book and the film I don't know if anyone else has read them, but there are actually two sequels where Howl and Sophie are demoted to side characters while the main character is different in both. I *liked* Castle in the Air, but in House of Many Ways, Howl's character was *So. Freaking. Obnoxious.* that it turned what I would have considered a "good book" into a solid "meh" and the only thing that possibility could've have saved the book for me was if Sophie had asked for a divorce from Howl-the-literal-manchild and got to keep the castle.

That was amazing! Please someone almighty, request Arrietty the Borrower / The Borrowers! It is such a sweet Ghibli feature, and very truthful to the book, in my opinion, maybe even more than the British adaptations?

YES! I finally got to watch this! And baby Dom, I remember when this came out 🥺

Didn't realise this was based on a book, only watched the film once. I think if it had been more accurate, the bit about the humans being cut up and reformed, would have been rather horrifying from anime. It was cool seeing you do an animated film, I'm hoping if you ever want to do a video on Roald Dahls BFG, you'll do the animated version. I did enjoy the live action one but the animated one is so good and deserves to be better known.

I love both the book and the movie equally but seperatly. I how the Sofie of the book took adversity in stride and the Howl of the book could be brave when he needed to be. But the movie is stunning and wonderful and I love it to bits.

Baby little Dom here to show us what a journey today-Dom has made so far. <3

I think the reason some people like me like Book Howl better is because of his flaws. Personally I LIKE the “douchebag with a heart of gold” and I like it because I can make a lot of jokes about them. Also personally while I adore the film and it introduced me to the book and remains one of my comfort films, I do like the book a bit better. Mostly because it seem funnier to me. It’s full of a very matter of fact attitude towards everything and I think that’s hilarious and I like the subversions of fairy tale tropes that are established to exist in this world. Personally I also don’t think it’s a BAD adaptation, I more consider it half of a good adaptation and half of a different film that’s kind of a “what if” scenario of the original story. Like if the book had been made to be lighter then Miyazaki’s version totally could have been what happened. Maybe that’s just me though, but I also love how Howl genuinely DOES love Sophie in the book and stays faithful to her, and that in the second book she actually loves him partially BECAUSE of his flaws which is kind of rare to find in media. But that’s just my two cents on the matter

I loved this movie and I loved Diana Wynne Jones for some of her other series and when I found out she'd written the book the movie was based on I was completely "Sign me up!" It was very soon apparent that the message of both stories was very different and Dom also didn't mention Miyazaki's aesthetic choice to make Sophie and Howl both have dark bland hair instead of being gingers, both of them. This was probably done because a Japanese audience would never have understood why they hated their appearance when they had wonderful red hair, it just would not have been easy to depict with all of the exposition that was left out. Also, Miyazaki made the whole thing decidedly anti-war when the original book was decidedly "Eh, whatever, hey I can get paid for helping a war effort? AWESOME! More pretty things!" Sophie's magic was the real story and I just loved it in the book. The movie is a wonderful romp and a good movie as you said, but a bad adaptation because of the agenda it was toting. But sometimes a lot of distinct differences between the mediums makes it a lot of fun... *remembers The Violinist of Hameln Anime and Manga* And sometimes you want one of them to burn in a fire. Sometimes the best thing a movie can do is just enough right to make you want to read the book (Thank you Golden Compass)

I’m curious about your thoughts on this one. I always felt very iffy about this movie as it is the only Hayao Miyazaki movie that didn’t really win me over tremendously as it did a lot of people. As a film, I feel like he was almost out of his element with this adaptation, not helped by the fact that he was taking over the position that was originally leftover from Mamoru Hosoda. As an adaptation though, that for me at least remains to be seen. Can’t wait to check it out.

THANK YOU FOR THE WARNING! I read the comments before watching video & am so freaking glad I did. I have a serious spider phobia! I need warnings to keep me from screaming & throwing my phone. No phones thrown at all especially after that FRESH HELL! WHY WAS THE HOUSE LIKE THAT?! WAS IT SET ON FIRE?! ☹️😨😱🙀

I saw the movie first and just listened to the Audible book and kept having to stop like did I download the wrong book ?

I know I'm ages late on this one, but thank you for this. I adore the book and found the adaptation to be frustrating because so many people loved the movie but never read the book. Trying to explain to someone why I hate the movie is damned near impossible if you haven't read the damned book.
