Oddjob isn't cheating, just poor sportsmanship. Let's admit, less effort Spielberg is still one of the best cinema going experiences of a year

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the movie. Also yes that was serenity Daito showed up in at the end. Somehow seeing her on the big screen was more amazing then the badass fight between gundam and mechagodzilla.

I can't say I'm surprised it widely diverged from the books, but I expected it to happen closer to the half an hour mark.

the rope thing, there was a counter weight on the rope. chaining the rope kept the counter weight up in the air so all he had to do was grab it and be pulled up.

The 'learn from Hugh Laurie' thing reminded me that I had to convince an American friend of mine that Bob Hoskins was English rather than American . Coincidentally, my first time watching Hoskins was a Spielberg movie, Hook...and that went off on a tangent. Apologies.

Do the book or the film explain the long leg?

James Miller

honestly the H reveal totally caught me off guard, during the entire thing up to that point i had not inkling that she was a girl the entire time. I mainly chalk that up to not reading the book or looking at the posters at all.

About him chaining up the rope, the rope had a counter weight on it and he chained it up so he could use it to get back up later, i dont know how he would have made the counter weight weigh more to do that but thats what i took from it

Artemis (or however her handle was spelled) wouldn't have had a problem knowing the long spell. Its another reference: Its the Charm of Making from John Boorman's Excalibur: http://www.evertype.com/misc/charm.html

Not quite sure why you think that the Oasis had a one life, game over rule. It was pretty clear in the book (and said in the movie) that when you die you lose all your stuff and start over at level one. This isn't as big of an issue for the sixers as they just get given new armor/stuff so being level isn't as big a deal for them as a normal person.
