Wincent, The Hollow Knight

Hooray! It's back. And I read the books in the interim! And I have essay I should be working on! And I'm overusing exclamation marks!

I always look forward to these when I see them on my dash! Great work, as always!

God, I really hate that the show didn't do Bran's falling dream. It is honestly my favourite chapter in the book, ahead of even the Tower of Joy dream. So fantastically written, really awe-inspiring to read. But instead it's just Bran shooting arrows in an empty Winterfell courtyard. So disappointing. Edit: And kinda strange also how Bran's dreams are ok but Ned's are not. Only showing the magically inspired dreams gives them more focus and lets the audience know they're significant, I suppose. But it does take away from the realism of dreams being something that every person experiences, that the books have.

I dunno if I'd agree that the show makes Theon more unlikable in the first season. Really I'd say it makes him more sympathetic, getting mocked by Tyrion, playing up his loyalty to Robb, having him and Ros have their romance. Seems more likeable to me than the guy who in the book's first chapter kicks around a freshly chopped off head for fun and is a prick towards Jon Snow. And then in the second season they double down on it, showing Theon in a very sympathetic light from the very first time he's introduced, and leaving out all of the smugness, dickishness and callousness he shows throughout the second book that make his misfortunes feel earned for a long time.

I always thought it was kinda funny how mundane the scene of Robert hunting is in the show. Oh yes, just the king and his brother out for a stroll in the woods, with a squire and a seventy-year-old as their plus ones. No horses, of course, and no retinue or courtiers along, don't be silly! Edit: Something else I always liked was how the heart eating ceremony in the book was something with some really serious stakes. If Dany hadn't gulped it down like a champ, the Dothraki would have taken it as a very bad omen, which could have hurt her, Drogo, and their child. How Dany prepared for it by eating other raw flesh in advance, and how she gruellingly went through the difficult ordeal really gave her some more agency and showed her strength as a character, imo.

Totally up to you in the end, but I'd like to request that when you choose show footage, you try and steer clear of the gory moments. I'm interested in this series for your adaptation comments, but not okay with the head slicing and eye stabbing of GoT. Or you could do the same cover up you do for nudity with clip art over the gross stuff.

Great episode, I love how you have strong objectivity in comparing the show and the books, with hints of subjectivity when it comes to specific things like the sword of the dawn and such.

Hey Amy I get why it bothers you but tbh I'm already editing these eps twice as much as anything else to get around the random nudity. If I try to avoid the violence too its going to make them impossible to work with.
