This post is both an early preview of a game that will be coming out eventually and a bit of insight into my creative process.  What is the game actually about? Here's my first attempt at an official blurb:

Game Intro

The Endless Court is eternal, ruled by Immortals who have guided the four races of the world since the dawn of time. But they seem very concerned that no one spends too much time studying the broken ruins that litter the world, and peace is more fragile than it seems.

Felana is one of the historians at the margins of society, forced to prostitution by the anti-scholarship edicts of the Endless Court. All she wants is to take care of her daughter and study in peace... but as war brews among Immortals and her knowledge suddenly becomes troublingly relevant, she isn't going to have that option.

The Cast

Felana: A strong woman who doesn't mind using her body as a way to survive, but who wishes for a better life. Though she's the game's protagonist, this game jumps between different characters more frequently than TLS.

Trila: Felana's daughter, conceived in her youth. A half-breed of two different races, she occupies an uncertain place in society that mirrors her uncertainty in life. She has conflicted feelings about her mother's work (both sexual and academic). Their relationship is one of the central threads of the game.

Palind: A conflicted Immortal who has given up on the idea of reforming the Endless Court and instead lives in simple isolation. For years he has been inactive, but when he meets Felana and Trila, he begins to wonder if there isn't another way. Can he use his position for the good of the world instead of only for his own benefit?

Anmin: A young mage the party meets in the city of the Endless Court. Her motives and her loyalties are ambiguous, but she seems to know something about the forces stirring against the Court. Who does she work for, and what does she want?

Lyrillian: One of dozens of nobles vying to become the next Immortal, Lyrillian is determined and talented but spoiled. She begins in opposition to the party, but when events turn her life upside down, she'll have to reconsider her loyalties...

Those are just the party members, there are other characters that will be introduced throughout the game. I do not like writing hype text, but I hope that gets people a little interested!

Rambling

This project actually has a long history. My plan has always been to try to create at least one conventional h-RPG, both for the experience and as a benchmark. It's hard to make data-driven conclusions in creative fields, but I like to have more information. My first attempt was Ouroboros, but that pretty much immediately turned into an atypical h-game.

With Desecration of Wings, I'm giving this goal another shot. I want to make a game that's just good plot and mechanics, no meta twists or unusual mechanics. I also wanted to strike a more even balance in terms of adult content: solid RPG gameplay with NSFW content evenly distributed throughout.

This game is also a way to "rescue" some old work I abandoned in RPG Maker VX. I had some nice scripts and systems that I never got a chance to use. Having said that, working in VX has made me eager to return to Ace. >.> This will definitely be the last game I ever create in VX.

I actually hired out a few parts of this game and purchased more assets than usual, though the core plot and game design are still mine. This was an experiment I hoped would improve TLS creation speed, but I don't think it ended up that useful. Still, lessons learned, and it produced a game I think is worth playing.

A lot of the work on the game is actually done. See below for a fairly accurate representation of progress:

Progress Report (Updated October 1)

First Draft: 100%
Editing: 100%
Maps: 100%
Combat: 100%
Testing: 90%
Character Art: 100%
Sex Scenes: 100%
Custom Sprites: 20%
CG Art:  NaN %

You can see how the heavy lifting on my end is done, so it's not like this game will be consuming a large amount of my time. But it also won't be done soon, because it takes a while for a full game of assets to be commissioned. This is something I'll be quietly working on in the background, and maybe you'll hear about in more detail as it gets closer to completion.

Artists and Connection to TLS

After having several artists flake out on me, and hearing from other devs about artist troubles in general, I've decided on a new plan for finding a TLS artist: I'll only choose someone who has worked with me on a significant project. That will let me see their work ethic and also give all of you a chance to see their style and ability.

I am happy with the character artist whose work you see above.  He hasn't done any NSFW scenes, though, so we'll have to see about that. Worst case scenario, I will consider trialing some other artists as well for this project, so long as I can keep the style consistent.

He's not the only other artist I've been working with, either. There are two other projects and two other artists. You'll hear about them in time, too! I hope that by doing it this way, we'll be able to find an artist for TLS via a series of interesting side projects instead of just attempts with artists who don't work out in the end.

But for now, check out the animated title art! I actually just commissioned normal title text, but the artist added an animated version as a special bonus gift. ^-^

Thanks

Again, I want to express my gratitude to everyone for supporting me in my dream job. There is nothing I would rather be doing than making games.  Side projects help keep me productive overall, so I'm glad everyone is willing to support me in them. If you're reading this post, you'll definitely get all the finished games for free as thanks!

There's actually a lot of stuff in the works I wish I could show, but I intend to pace myself and stay focused. Expect the TLS update and the data post in the near future, some polls about art direction after that, and eventually some of these side projects. Please look forward to everything!

OMG! I love it! The concept, the art, and all this mixture of political and divinity conflict between inmortals and mortals. 100% behind this already, can't wait to try it :)

Censuur

So here's me being impressed with the work and progress of just TLS and you've actually put all this together already. You mentioned this was going to be more of a conventional type RPG, what does that mean for things like combat? Will it be along the lines of Noxian Nights? Does switching characters mean different parties or just different leads?

Decanter

This looks nice. I'll look forward to it. >But they seem very concerned that no one spends too much time studying the broken ruins that litter the world, I took this the opposite of the way you meant it on first read. >Trila She seems quite androgynous. Not to say that's bad. >Anmin Huh. This is what Bertricia called Altina. Pure coincidence, I assume. >My plan has always been to try to create at least one conventional h-RPG Noxian Nights wasn't this? >check out the animated title art! I actually just commissioned normal title text, but Lires added an animated version as a special bonus gift. ^-^ Ooh. I hope you can put that in the game itself. I'd imagine there'd be some script for it, if it's not supported natively.

Sounds interesting. After TLS and Ouroboros I have to say that "traditional RPG plot" and "written by Sierra Lee" doesn't quite parse ;) I'm very curious to play it already. The art looks good too, the girls are very cute. Hopefully you and Lires can continue to partner up.

Xagnam

Do you plan on doing 'revisions' of the character art for TLS depending on which artist you primarily stick with?

sierralee

I've been trying my hardest to keep up the pace on TLS because I haven't been able to show off my work on some of this stuff. There's actually another project that's further along that I hope I'll be able to release before DoW. Combat is vanilla RPG Maker mechanics with the following additions: - Cheap special attacks that cause a variety of debuff states. These are weaker than strong effects like blind/silence, so many enemies are vulnerable and there's reason to use many different attacks on enemies. - Limit break type special attacks. - Skill learning from equipment, both active and passive skills. - Limited skill points to equip the skills you learn, forcing you to prioritize between skills. For example, you could equip a lot of active skills and be flexible, or increase your stats via the passive skills. I also have a much faster experience/level progression compared to TLS, keeping things light and non-grindy even in the combat-heavy segments. On the other hand, learning skills from equipment means that even if a neat piece of gear becomes obsolete a few dungeons later, the skill it taught you will still be useful for the rest of the game. Basically, combat will feel familiar but I hope these additions make it fun. By switching characters I mean that the party members listed above end up in a lot of different combinations. Felana is usually party lead when she's present, but there are also parts where Trila is alone or with other characters, sections where Anmin is party lead, etc.

>I took this the opposite of the way you meant it on first read. Hmm, will think about rephrasing. >She seems quite androgynous. Not to say that's bad. Yeah, the artist and I went back and forth on this. She's meant to look young, not androgynous. >Huh. This is what Bertricia called Altina. Pure coincidence, I assume. Basically, I like the sound too much for it to be just a word in a conlang. >Noxian Nights wasn't this? There's somewhat of a difference in focus, at least to me. To borrow terminology from VNs, NN was more nukige, DoW will be eroge. There will be some diversity of fetishes, but nowhere near the variety in NN. >Ooh. I hope you can put that in the game itself. I'd imagine there'd be some script for it, if it's not supported natively. I have no idea, but yeah, I sure hope I can get it into the game.

sierralee

Haha, well, it's not completely traditional. ^-^ Some parts are intended to be subversive and I sincerely hope a few of the plot twists will surprise people. But it doesn't have a core premise that has to be explained like Ouroboros. Collaboration has gone well so far, so I hope we can keep working on this. I'll let him know you liked the art!

sierralee

That will be one of the things I ask patrons about in terms of overall art direction. However, my general thought is that I'd want to pick an artist whose style is already close to the current TLS profiles. A degree of aesthetic continuity is important to me, and the game mostly has that. Whereas to adopt a new consistent style would require... let me check... redrawing 67 profile images and 226 facesets. XD I think getting to see the characters having fun will be most people's first priority.

Dorago

All this is very interesting, I like the art, I'm looking forward to try this game :) I support your dream job, but you provide games that make me dream :)

Seil

My first thought: Ooooooh. My second thought: Hum-dee-dum, that mysterious mage, guess who wants to bang the mysterious mage? Me-me-me! Anyway... Art looks really nice, "higher planes" setting in h-rpg sure looks interesting, and while you said you wanted to make a game with "no meta twists or unusual mechanics", knowing you, i say that's um... slightly hard to believe. Like just a little bit, yep. =) i am quite interested in overall party dynamics and relationship in the group. Felana/Trila relationship looks intriguing, for example. Oh, and can't forget Anmin, as well.

Anonymous

This all sounds very interesting, i look forward to more information and game itself in the future. Also, i like the art.

sierralee

The party dynamics are definitely part of what I like about this one. They may surprise you a little bit, though, hopefully all in a good way.

Forgotten Legacy

If this is any where near as in depth as your other creations it will be amazing. Your attention to details and story-line progression are amazing.

sierralee

Thank you! If Ouroboros was a short story and TLS is a huge multi-volume series, DoW is like a standalone novel. I'm happy with the core plot, but a lot of my remaining editing will be focused on making this length of game as satisfying as possible.

Hollow49

Even without Sierra's name attached, the summary would intrigue me. The character art is well-drawn, the plot has potential. With the guarantee of good writing attaching to the author's name, I'm definitely interested.

Quiet Stranger

I have a special affection for that visual style. With all respect to Nomo's diligence, I much prefer the cel shading work of the Last Sovereign, the original Ouroboros, and what will soon be "Desecration of the Wings." It just suits your games so well.

Hund

I'm looking forward to a "normal" game of yours. But then again, I'm always looking forward to any game of yours.

While I can appreciate your desire for a benchmark, don't forget that the deep, dynamic style and mechanics you employ are what sets you apart for most of your fans. Understand, I'm not at all worried about the quality of any games you put out. You have high standards, and I have a fair bit of faith. Ouroboros - and later TLS - is what got me hooked on your work. Anyways, that was my spiel. Really looking forward to DoW and more TLS!!

Leveler All

And even content and ideas, recicle the old and use it :p is good to see you are keeping yourself busy, even your breaks are work , but really toguh ill be great to stick around and see all the different kinds of characters and ideas you come up with.

Vitreous Humour

And this is why so many of us support you, and so strongly. There are very few independent game creators (I'm not even going to limit you to H-game creators) that have the internal drive, creativity, thoughtfulness, passion for the topic, coding expertise, and literary skill that you do. Just by showing us this type of design document, it's clear how much effort you put into even the basic framework of your games. In fact, I'd say I don't know ANY single creator that has as much skill. Honestly, this reminds me that I should increase my support.

Arrngrim

Artist flaking out on you...I guess I missed something the last few months...? As always your story-telling is superb.

Anonymous

Sounds fun, looking forward to the game. You keep making interesting plots that are fun to see through to the end.

sierralee

That's very generous, but thanks! Because of all of you, I'm able to do this full time and try to keep developing my skills and the scope of my games!

sierralee

You didn't miss anything; it's not something I've broadcast publicly. But yes, behind the scenes, it is very difficult to find artists who are consistently professional. Hope you enjoy this one upon release!
