There's too much going on right now to lay it all out in a post: I'm staying focused on the TLS update I just released and the ongoing question of art. Today's post will be about the latter.

Annikath created six images presenting different potential shading styles for the game. I showed them to $5 patrons with some other bonus images, but there was little consensus about which options were preferable. Accordingly, I'm going to make a poll and open it up to all patrons.

Click here to download all six versions at decent resolution:

(EDIT: It may also be useful to you to see them at the game resolution instead of full size. Decanter put this together, so take a look: https://c10.patreonusercontent.com/3/eyJ3IjoxNjAwfQ%3D%3D/patreon-media/p/post/26338707/a172143f1017400f87593a9748f32e53/1.png?token-time=1557705600&token-hash=zRK3nw7bFj0x0_mzaCe3QJKlm-LaqdxA0ooCCp9J44k%3D )

Let me say a bit about what each style is trying to accomplish:

 • #0 Softshaded: A standard anime style of shading.
 • #1 Cres-shading: Copying the blend of styles that Crescentia uses.
 • #2 TLS Style: An attempt to copy the character portraits as much as possible.
 • #3 Soft Light: This one adds a bit of painterly styling.
 • #4 Annikath: A blend of styles particular to Annikath.
 • #5 Grayshading: Another style of shading altogether.

Feel free to give any feedback you like, but I'm looking for votes. Here are the rules: please only vote for styles you would be enthusiastic about, and please don't vote for more than 3 options. Those rules aren't enforced by the poll, so I'm trusting everyone to keep to them.

That is all for now, but you'll hear from me soon with more stuff.

It is very hard to choose. #3 has the best looking sub surface scattering imo, but the albedo is too high giving it that "oiled" look I really don't like. I think all of them minus #0 and #2 are really fine and hard to choose between since they are all quite good, no clear consensus between them is a good problem to have I think.

Only ones I have anything against are #2 and #3. #2 is very flat looking, and #3 makes them look like plastic figures.

1 has my vote, though 3 is a close runner up!

Grimwauld

Tough set of choices.

I couldn't choose between 2 and 3 so I voted for both...I like the feel of the "TLS Original" but I also like the lighting on "Soft Light"

I loved the richer reds in the hair of the Annikath, but the skintones seemed a little sickly. Ended up voting for softshaded because, well, not to be crude but the body parts just looked tastier.

The greyshading method provides a nice balance between highlights, softening, and clarity. #3 gives the characters too much 'shine' on their highlights, while #1 & #4 are so soft edges start to blend together. #0 & #2 just have wierd coloration.

One caviat to this: these visuals are a lot higher resolution then they are in-game; sometimes with low-res you need exaggeration like we see in #2 to get things looking good. There is a reason news anchors made themselves up like clowns when TV first came into being. It might have been a good idea to show us these images in the resolution they'd appear in-game. Our opinions could very well shift as the images loose detail.

Decanter

Still like 4 best overall but I can get behind 0 or 1. If we were doing strategic voting I would pick 1 in hopes of making 3 not happen... so plastic... Really think showing these to people only in high resolution this time was a mistake, though. It seems more important that they look good as they will look in-game. Edit: If anyone is reading this and wondering what they look like in lower res, see if this link works for you: https://c10.patreonusercontent.com/3/eyJ3IjoxNjAwfQ%3D%3D/patreon-media/p/post/26338707/a172143f1017400f87593a9748f32e53/1.png?token-time=1557705600&token-hash=zRK3nw7bFj0x0_mzaCe3QJKlm-LaqdxA0ooCCp9J44k%3D

I didn't include the smaller set because Patreon won't let you have both a picture and a poll. I could still change it, but given how many people have voted I'm not sure the mistake is really fixable.

Quiet Stranger

Seeing them side-by-side, rather than one at a time in high resolution, made it easy for me to pick out the comparative lack of skin vibrancy for Esthera in most styles. While I am a big fan of our classic portrait art, #2 would not have been an obvious choice for me before Decanter's file was posted. It nonetheless became my choice as soon as I looked over his array. #4 is my close second. It is a good mix of everything and also boasts a vibrant, distinct palette.

Sierra, would it be possible to do this as a run-off instead of highest vote? I prefer #4, but there are several other styles I could easily get behind. On the other hand if #3 really becomes the most popular option then I'll accept that my tastes are simply too good among plebeian hordes, but if it wins by a small margin among 6 options, that would be infuriating. I am not a fan of that porcelain doll effect.

sierralee

Uh, I hope this doesn't sound tyrannical, but this isn't a democracy. The purpose of the poll is to get a large amount of feedback from which I can make a decision.

Miragian

Personally, I think I would like any of them *except* #4. I'm not a huge fan of the shiny look.

I don’t have much of an opinion on the shading, but I loved the chibi/comic option for the Kai scenes :D

Badger66

I like #1 the best with #4 behind it.

Nathan Phoenix

I would say #1 has the best balance of detail and "natural look". You still have the soft skin tone which is a must when depicting women. Yet it also shows detail in the sheet wrinkles and muscle tone. My only compliant is the lack of blush effect from 0 or 5 so might want to deepen the red on the face. The shine from 2 and 3 just makes them look plastic, It would work great for sweat but I think you established succubi from TLS don't sweat.

Robert McClenahan

All of the styles look fine to me, but I am in favor of the characters being easily recognizable from their game portraits.

Michael Vaccaro

I'm torn between #1 Cres-shading and #3 Soft Light. I think to my eye the flesh tones in #3 look more natural while they seem to be a little harsh in the other versions.

Barissia

hyped for all the Succubus art
