The second book in the series is officially released! After a somewhat shaky start, it appears to be in the correct genres with the correct metadata. A second release is trickier, because some of your interest is drained into the first book, but I'm crossing my fingers that it goes well.

So if you are interested in the book, now would be a great time! Both books need more reviews, especially the second one. A few of you have expressed interest in posting about the books on other platforms and you can feel free now. We'll just have to see how much traction the book can get. >_<

Some other news:

1) Unrelated to the book, Valve finally approved TLS, so that is ready to launch once the public build happens.

2) The audiobook production of NGM#1 has finished and the files were accepted by Audible, so now it's just a question of when they release it.

I've gotta go do more marketing now. There aren't many things more likely to kill all motivation to work on anything, but marketing is pretty much essential for indies. Honestly, I should be doing far more. Hopefully I will be able to finish before the end of the day and then clear my head.

Next update on Sunday, possibly with a new TLS version, depending on how demotivated I get after marketing.

Well, if you do get demotivated there's always New Game Minus #3, Ouroboros in novelized form, saying "Fuck it" and playing some games, or Yarra's favorite pastime, masturbating.

Belly97

Did you have to change/remove anything for Valve to accept TLS?

sierralee

It will be going to Steam with the content unaltered! What Valve required were some changes to my page and jumping through arbitrary hoops.

Just finished reading both volumes of NGM today. (minor spoilers follow) Overall they're good books, with likable characters, an interesting premise and good cliffhangers. They're also unmistakably yours, sharing a lot of themes with your previous works (especially Ouroboros, with a pinch of TLS). Not a problem since they're mostly targeted at a new audience for whom this approach will be fresh, but some recurring patterns are starting to show when you're used to them (both the funny cold truth ones, like the best way to combat strength being money, and the disturbing ones, like artificially enhancing a person's intelligence so they fit better). More problematic maybe is that both books have the exact same general structure: 1. Bloodwraith discovers and analyses the system he is now a part of (how to level up yourself in 1, how to level up your undead companion in 2) 2. Bloodwraith acts pretty much like an actual barbarian warrior and that's boring (fighting bandits and greencloaks, competing in the arena) 3. The big bad shows up and almost kills him 4. The group and their newly found ally (Danniah in 1, Gharavi in 2) prepare for the rematch 5. Big bad is defeated with the help of a flying lizard 6. A bigger bad shows up in the epilogue Of course, this could a voluntary redundancy, to show Bloodwraith is actually still a prisoner of a greater scope game... But Occam's razor points to some accidental repetition.

Some similarities are inevitable, though I didn't intend them to come off quite as they operated for you. Obviously I didn't want #2 to be boring, and in this book in particular I tried to include more elements like the necromancy and dealing with his old lich ally. Overall the intended arc is that he starts out having to act as an adventurer and evolves away from this. #3/4/6 are intentional parallels, especially in regard to the "big bad" of the third book. #5 I get, though I intended that to be a development, as the drake was a major part of the first scheme and the shardwing was only a minor aspect. The intended difference in that climactic fight was the heavy use of magical artifacts. I'm glad you generally liked the books, though. If you think they're worth reviews on sites, I'd be very grateful for them.

Picked it up an read it today on Kindle Unlimited. The creepy ghoul daughter was my favorite character in this story, but you did a good job of giving the older characters their places to shine. Single favorite moment was the unnamed undead skull trying to chomp Danniah. I do find it hilarious that the dreaded enemy for the next story is Quality Control! Looking forward to it and seeing more of the world. (ps Maera is still super scary, she is like a little eldritch abomination in training). Question: Do they know what humans are? I assume that Bloodwraith (our protagonist) is currently living in one and that Meara is one, not to mention all the references to half breeds. But when the Aesidh mentions humans meddling in the world they don't act confused and take it in stride. In short, do humans in the world = humans from outside the world (outsiders), and do the characters recognize the word 'human' as we do?

sierralee

Contrary to the covers and descriptions, all the "human" characters have actually been insect people this whole time! Cut to black! Directed by M. Night Shyamalan! Earth humans are pretty similar to humans in their world, though with different magical sensitivities. I had to think about how I should write that section and I don't know that how I handled it was perfect. Basically, the cast was a bit confused about how he used the term, but guessed his meaning from context. That was my intent, anyway. When I write more this will be explored in greater depth. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the book! I had fun writing Izzy. ^-^ Please leave ratings/reviews!

I just posted a review on /r/fantasy like I did for the first one. If anyone wants to give that an upvote to increase visibility click here: https://old.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/amv25t/review_raising_allies_new_game_minus_2_an/? I posted a review on amazon.ca too, but that got swallowed up somehow. So I resubmitted, hopefully it will work this time

sierralee

Thank you very much! You might want to post that link in the newest update thread too, where more people might see it. Any time spent on the front page of r/fantasy is great! I don't know what to think about Amazon reviews disappearing. I had another reader complain about that too, and research suggests that Amazon auto-deletes in some cases, but it's hard to know.

Secular Reason

Been busy so I haven't even read the first one yet, but the trust in your worldbuilding is enough that I bought the sequel despite that.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! Hope you enjoy the books when you have time.
