TLS 0.39.1 is out and seems to be in okay shape. My first objective this month will be to finish polishing it for a public release. I hope to continue into finishing the summit with 0.40.0 with little delay, though I want to avoid burnout and there's one personal thing that could pop up and really hamper my progress.

Other things may happen this month. For example, I will bring TLS to Steam... at some point. Part of me wants to wait for a better stopping point, or avoid the AAA release season, but I'm unsure if those things matter too much. Part of it is just taking time from other things to invest in this release.

There will likely be major novel developments this month. I've been making progress and finishing up some things. Like TLS on Steam, it's just a question of when to do it to avoid damaging my overall progress. Managing stress is a key concern for me right now.

At some point this month or the next, I will take a short break. To facilitate that, I'd like a new game to play, so I'm soliciting recommendations. I play two types of games: in-depth RPGs like TLS, which I find engaging, and simpler reflex/timing games, which I find relaxing. I'm looking for the latter for my break. Some examples of games I particularly enjoyed will follow.

Platformers*: Cuphead, I Wanna be the Guy, Spelunky

Rogue-lites: Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Desktop Dungeons, Crypt of the Necrodancer

*I'm also just fine with Metroidvanias, though I don't have any examples at hand. I've had people recommend Dead Cells and Guacamelee to me, and those both seem up my alley, but I haven't tried them for myself yet.

New release of TLS will appear next weekend. See you then!

Hyper Light Drifter is a neat top-down action RPG. Pixel graphics (if you're into that), fluid combat, great soundtrack, mysterious backstory up to interpretation. Hollow Knight is a cool Metroidvania. Nice aesthetics, also mysterious background.

Scol

As pixel art lover this year was amazing for me. Aside from Dead Cells you mentioned and Into The Breach which fall into category you didn't mention (tactics game) there were: Celeste - simple yet challenging platformer Wizard of Legend - roguelite with a lot of spells to combo Crosscode - SNES era inspired rpg with modernized gameplay, great puzzles and amazing writing. Probably top 2018 game for me.

StalkerRoguen

You will relax playing "Cuphead" and "I Wanna be the Guy"? That's the type of games that I start nice, then end up "clenching my fist". How about Megaman 11? The new gear system is cool.

Lamsey

Platformer-wise: Mark Of The Ninja's pretty good and has just had a remastered rerelease. If you can tolerate a mobile suggestion, Alto's Odyssey is about as simple as it gets, yet very relaxing. RPG-wise: if you haven't tried Bastion or Transistor, they're rogue-lites with beautiful art and audio. I should get around to trying Pyre, too (same developer).

Seil

Rabi-Ribi. It's Metroidvania meets Bullet Hell. Also Copy Kitty. It's like a Megaman Platformer with added dose of crazyness and chaos.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is quite good. No need to have played the first. Story heavy party-based RPG with turn-based combat in 3D space. Tons of spells to learn and tons of builds to experiment with.

Lamsey

Check the download links in the TLS 0.39.0 thread - they've been updated to 0.39.1.

Anonymous

For another rogue-lite, maybe look at Tangledeep?

sierralee

Wow, I got a lot of suggestions! I appreciate them all, but it will take me some time to look into them. For now, will just reply on a few genre issues quick.

sierralee

I decide to stop sometimes, but yeah, I enjoy games like that. I haven't played a Megaman game in ages! Will look into it.

Greentext Guy

I know someone else suggested it but seriously play Dead Cells. It's a great Rogue Like Platformer. Tons of fun and tons of content. Available for pretty much everything <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvGaSPTcTxc" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvGaSPTcTxc</a>

For an RPG, "The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky" is a fun game. Very old school, but XSEED has done a good job of toning up its engine for modern PCs, with things like widescreen support. The plot is nothing terribly original, but the worldbuilding and localization are wonderful, with lots of color and depth. For example, most NPCs have a name and a running dialogue story. After every major story beat, their dialogue updates.

Belly97

Not sure if it's what you're after but the Witcher games are brilliant open world RPGs that I highly recommend. I would also suggest the Mount and Blade games; particularly Mount &amp; Blade: Warband, it's a very enjoyable medieval RPG with great mods available that drastically improve and/or change the game and can even add another whole games worth of content. I have personally sunk a couple of thousand hours into Warband just playing around and having fun.

Belly97

Will the Steam version of TLS be updated at the same time as the Patreon one, will it cost anything and will there be achievements? Would love it if so. Also if you are having any personal problems feel free to relax, take a break and de-stress, a healthy, happy creator produces better content and everyone here wouldn't mind you needing some time to yourself.

Belly97

Just a random question; are going to a Patreon goal, as you reached double your old one awhile ago? Also I might have asked before (I have a terrible memory) but what social media do you have; Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Discord .ect?

sierralee

Hmm, I don't think I've heard of that one at all. I do like old school RPGs, though, so I'm willing to look into it!

sierralee

There's no way to integrate Steam and Patreon, so at best the Steam version would keep up with public releases. Even that is likely to be an issue for me, as I dislike Steam's interface and loath the idea of every public update getting more complicated. Achievements: unlikely, sorry. Getting achievements to work with RPG Maker is touchy - I blew hours trying to get achievements with Ouroboros to no effect.

sierralee

I don't know what the new reward would signify, to be honest, so I haven't ever set one up. But over the next several months my goal will be to maintain current levels. Ever since Patreon changed their payment processing, I've struggled to grow from month to month. I basically don't do any social media, but I do have two Tumblr accounts: <a href="https://sierraleesfw.tumblr.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://sierraleesfw.tumblr.com/</a> <a href="https://sierraleensfw.tumblr.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://sierraleensfw.tumblr.com/</a>

Taium

Don't know if they'll work, but at two ends of the spectrum I find Stardew Valley and Saint's Row 2 really relaxing. Nothing like building a farm. Or crushing rival gang leaders. If you have the Nintendo Switch the Adventure Mode they announced on the new Smash looks really good too.

Belly97

I definitely recommend the Saints row franchise, especially Saints Row 4, although if you want relaxing Stardew Valley is Great. They are both also made even better with mods.

smurf

If you're into tougher platformers like I Wanna Be the Guy, I'd say Celeste is a must-play. Its difficulty and controls are perfectly tuned to put you into a flow state pretty much from the get-go, and its story is simple but actually rather affecting. Flywrench would also be a great pick, it's got a fantastically zen soundtrack and simple rules that offer really unique, tricky movement. And if you haven't already played it, Metroid Zero Mission is a metroidvania I've revisited lately which holds up quite well. It's really good about getting tools for exploration and combat into your hands right away, and making sure that they're all fun to use instead of being glorified keys.

DukeLeto7

I think the last time I played an orthodox platformer it was one of the PS1 Oddworld titles. The last time I played an orthodox JRPG prior to TLS was FF VIII, which caused me to say "yeah, never again". Burned out on the western variety partway through Icewind Dale 1. Did a playthrough of the obscure Sacred because I got a free copy. You could make an argument that Kerbal Space Program is a Timing/Reflex game as long as you don't use the MechJeb mod. I'm not helping...

Pillars of Eternity 1 is a solid rpg with a good story imo. They really good deep into the relationship between theology and civilization. Should you be blindly subservient to a god/gods or go your own way? Are gods beyond reproach? Is it fair for gods to punish everyone when they are slighted by a few? What if that god betrays you or what if you betray it? What is a god? It tries to answer questions like these in some way. It does some nice moral quandaries to ponder over and some limited player choice. Kind of reminds me of TLS in a way.

StalkerRoguen

If you are taking RPG's into consideration( and have 200 hours to spare) and is a fan of tabletop RPGS, I would suggest Pathfinder: Kingmaker. It was a Kickstarter's project and was only released a month ago. It uses Pathfinder system of rules (It's identical to D&amp;D 3.5) and is isometric. It's similar to Baldur's Gate.

Dubsington

Patreon members expect games to be unfinished, but I am not sure how well that will play on Steam.

DuckTogo

I would want to recommend you a slew of games, but there are so many comments that I am just going to say that Guacamelee is definitely a good choice and you might want to look into La Mulana if you want a difficult puzzle platformer. Guacamelee just feels good to play after an hour or so, the fighting mechanics just give you a sense of actually doing something instead of just button mashing. I don't think you should worry about the timing of TLS on Steam. Unless you want to wait until the game is actually finished, the release timing is basically irrelevant compared to the fact that you have a familiar and accessible platform to present TLS on. There is also kind of a culture of Early Access on Steam, which is honestly horrible, but seems suited to monthly updates. I think you'll end up with a good bump in followers by the end of the year.

Grey Wolf

This would definitely be a larger concern a decade ago when Steam had serious quality control and early access wasn't a big thing, nowadays the paradigm has changed. Though this saturation is connected to why getting it up on steam isn't likely to catapult the game into becoming a worldwide sensation.

Since everyone else has been very wholesome I suppose I’ll be a deviant and suggest trying Rance VI. It’s one of the few Rance games series that has an official translation and might be the first that’s a real true long RPG game. Being mostly a light dungeon crawling game with a turn based battle system. It’s mostly the plot people would recommend it for and the fact that the game has one a very infamous antihero as the protagonist.

sierralee

I've played Rance VI (and Sengoku). I'm afraid I'll have to pass on recommendations for AliceSoft games.

Dark Art

Glad to hear you are planning to take a break and chillax for a bit :) In terms of game recommendations I'll second Divinity Original sin (I and II) for a longish and involved journey, but if you want something less heavy try The Darkest Dungeon. Its rather unique and quite fun. If you'll happen to like the art and the game, look up other games by Klei (Dont Starve, Oxygen not included, etc), they are great after work relaxers. Also, This War of Mine is definitely worth looking into and not just for its art style/gameplay as it places you inside a war zone as a civvie and your only goal is to live and not go nuts. Happy trails! Also, if none of the suggestions will interest you, consider revisiting old friends like Planescape Torment :)

Rachnera

A good DS emulator + The World Ends with You? It's a one-of-a-kind, short* RPG with a rich, rhythm-based, battle system truly relying on both screens of the DS, and starring angsty teenagers, pop fashion, street art, angels and demons. Think Jet Set Radio meet Paper Mario meet Evangelion. *Unless you want to grind to get every single collectible.

sierralee

Already played Darkest Dungeon, but I did quite enjoy it. Too far on the strategy end to fit the relaxing category, but I do play that genre. Invisible Inc was quite enjoyable too.

sierralee

Oh, I hadn't thought about that in a long time, but I had people recommend that to me when it came out, as I do like quirky RPGs.

Anonymous

If you like J-RPG's the legend of hero's trials of cold steel series is pretty good. Both one and two have been released on steam and the interactions between characters and combat where actually enjoyable enough that I wanted to continue playing the game. Which hasn't really happened with any modern game in a while besides your own. Also do you prefer to go forward in time or back because if you have a PS3 that works i have some old school ones in mind that are timeless.

Decanter

I think waiting for the AAA season to be over and picking a good release time might be a good idea. Platformers and reflex-based roguelites huh? It happens that I keep track of games I liked, so this'll be long. Let's see, I'll start with free ones: An Untitled Story - a pretty unorthodox Metroidvania, by the dev who later made this Celeste people keep mentioning. I should warn that the difficulty level affects frequency of save points, but it's pretty challenging even on Simple. Also, try to get hatched quickly so you can talk to people - there's no timer, but it's more fun and convenient. Cave Story (as if you haven't already played this) Eversion - "A cute puzzle platformer with a dark secret." Iji - An upgrade-based platformer-shooter with an interesting story. Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls - not the most accurately named game, but a cute platformer. Tip: Don't worry too hard about money/rank unless you want to. Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt - not an exact fit for the list, admittedly. A silly pixel-graphics top-down shooter about healing people. Seiklus - cute, but maybe more explorative than you're looking for. Also free but you need Flash: Level Up! - progress-themed platformer with kind of an overarching Ouroboros thing going on. Tower of Heaven - platformer where a malevolent deity keeps imposing new rules on you as you climb. Pause Ahead - platformer where the central mechanic is pausing time for everything except your own inertia. Depict1 - short mysterious puzzle platformer with interesting art style. Verge - dual-world puzzle platformer where you transition from one world to the other by suicide. Lovecraftian undertones. K.O.L.M. 1 &amp; 2 - "Kind Of Like Metroid" William and Sly 1 &amp; 2 - cute magic fox platformer, I actually think 2 is a bit better. Don't Look Back - somewhat easy one way, difficult coming back because you have to... well, see the title. Endeavor - a sort of mini-epic about a dwarf who falls off his mountain home. The Company of Myself - co-op with yourself. Chronotron - as above but with robots and no story. Fear Less! - a cute short running game. Burrito Bison - squash gummy get money Not free: Thomas Was Alone - a platformer about jumping rectangles with different attributes working together. Shantae - not sure if the original ever came to PC, but it was good. Did some things differently. Sequels are probably worth trying if you like the original. Nihilumbra - puzzle platformer in which you paint surfaces to give them different attributes, such as bounciness. Very challenging advanced mode available after finishing the main story. Braid - short puzzle platformer about manipulating time. Wario Land 2 - a creative platformer with novel powerups. There's no lives system because the protagonist can't die, yet it remains challenging, so that's refreshing. Wario Land 3 in a similar vein, has kind of a 'vania thing going on in that you revisit levels after gaining new powers to get remaining treasure. Donkey Kong Country 2 (actually I played the Game Boy version, but I'm told the SNES version is essentially the same) VVVVVV - an unusual platformer because you can't jump, only reverse gravity when you're standing. Woten - cute short platformer about using the environment to progress and feeding fruit to a bat. Psychonauts - 3D platformer about a summer camp for psionic kids. Gunpoint - a 2D game about infiltrating buildings by manipulating the security networks and using super jump tech.

sierralee

I liked Cave Story, Eversion, and Iji, so I will definitely look into An Untitled Story! And Flash games can be good for a shorter break, so I'll put that list somewhere. Definitely know a few of those. Should probably have mentioned that I'm fairly well played when it comes to SNES/Gameboy era stuff, but I will take a look at some of the others. Psychonauts is one of those acclaimed games that is on my list to play, I just haven't.

Canabalt by adam atomic, a super simple runner game but I love the charm of it. Has it's own website but it's also up on newgrounds. Runs off flash and it's free.

I've been a fan of Mega Man since I was 3 years old, so I'd definitely recommend checking out Mega Man 11. Not only is it the first new Mega Man game in like 8 years, but it's actually a slam dunk into delivering what people were hoping with a new one.

Dark Art

What I hope to live to see one day is similar in potential engine the Pillars uses, their sound, voice acting and their artists working under someone as creative as Sierra.... Its extremely frustrating to see such potential those guys had wasted on, lets be honest here, a rather mediocre (considering all their hype and promises) game the Pillars turned out to be. The DLS/patches somewhat corrects that, but only to a point. I couldnt be bothered even to finish the game, even after backing them on the kickstarter and waiting for quite a while. A shame really... Maybe Pillars 2 are better, but I am not sure if I'll bother. Still, I hope that in a few years Sierra will launch her studio and start her own large scale project.

Greentext Guy

Esmera and kerannii tell Simon to come talk to them but I can't actually find them on the map. Any ideas?

Greentext Guy

Nevermind. Found it. Gotta go back to the first building after they talk to you in your room

DukeLeto7

I just realized that Orcent has arguably passed the bar.

HexedDragon

If you're looking for a fun game to pass the time, I really recommend Slay the Spire . It's a combination Rogue-lite and Deck-building game. It's on Steam, and is a lot of fun. You can play one of three characters each run, each one has their own list of cards you can create a deck with as you play. Check it out when you need a breather!
