So, time to talk business! This will be an unusual month covering diverse ground, so I'll divide this post into sections. Some may not be relevant to some of you, but do check them because I want input from people! Here are some things I'll be doing in February:

1) Commercial Release of Desecration of Wings

Issues with the Steam store have delayed the date, but you can see the approved store page here:
store.steampowered.com/app/793450/Desecration_of_Wings

Asset Countdown: 1

Commercial releases tend to involve very uneven levels of work for me, which makes it difficult to get creative work done. I'll definitely be writing, no question of that, but it will be disrupted. For that reason, I think this is a good month to try a variety of business things that I normally don't want to do. Might as well get them out of the way now.

2) Alternatives to Patreon

I've been meaning to put more time into finding alternates in the event of a worst case scenario. I tried to look through everything, but though there are a few options, none is a clear alternate path. I did set up the basics of an Enty, but the site is still rather unfriendly for English speakers and I'd rather not rely on it.

3) TLS on GameJolt

GameJolt is actually set up to favor free games, so I decided to make a TLS page there. If you use GameJolt, maybe give me a follow? But if not, it won't have anything Patreon doesn't have - this is basically just an effort at promotion. Here's the page:

https://gamejolt.com/games/thelastsovereign/316951

4) Fanart Repository?

People have been asking for a location to host TLS fanart for a while! I've delayed partially because I've been focused on work, partially because I didn't have a good solution. This is something I'd like feedback on, in case anyone has good ideas.

Options I am currently considering: images on HF, a new Tumblr, an Imgur album. The goals are something that's easy for me to maintain, lets you guys see pictures in high quality, and ideally could be seen by non-fans who might be interested. Doing more than one is possible, just more work for me.

5) Ouroboros on Steam?

People occasionally ask me if I'll ever put Ouroboros up on Steam. I didn't consider it at first because Steam is an unfavorable environment for RPG Maker games, not to mention ones with so much default RTP.

However, I find myself considering it again in a new form: a loss leader. I would hope that Steam users would be more favorable toward the game if it was $1, for example. It would take some time to figure out all the details, though, so it's not like this is an idea I can just throw up at random and see how it goes. The benefit would be that even if it did poorly, it would make me less reliant on Patreon in the event of a worst case scenario there. The game is somewhat old now, but that might be too steep a price decrease, though.

So yeah, I'm basically soliciting opinions on if I should take that step. Leave Ouroboros as it is, or try to use it for something new.

-

That's the situation! Hopefully the fallback plans will be unnecessary, but I believe it's good to be prepared. I'll have to do work to release DoW, but I'll be working on TLS as I can. Please be patient with me, as I can't guarantee progress at the usual rate.

Whatever happens, I'll report on it here! I look forward to everyone's input, or otherwise I'll see you next week!

A bit late but upon playing the new update again, it's interesting that those two guards outside on the outskirts still have the same opinion about orcs even though they are part of the royal army now. One of the guards think they are almost a proper army lol. They have the same opinion even after the new Ari-Yhilina change. Just a minor thing really but something I thought about.

i had little insight for the content of the post, but had some 'bug' report (strange :P). for start another batch of enemy with double posion status "294 istavan" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "295 magekiller" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "296 magekiller" double 'poison' status (0% - 0%) "297 magekiller" double 'poison' status (100% - 0%) "298 magekiller" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "313 jade ward" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "317 balanced demon" double 'poison' status (0% - 0%) "325 ginasta" double 'poison' status (0% - 0%) "348 seed of corruption" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "354 wynn" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "359 blood ward" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "366 guardian" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "387 ward demon" double 'poison' status (0% - 0%) "437 midnight ogre" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "458 ogre" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "473 magekiller" double 'poison' status (25% - 0%) "474 magekiller" double 'poison' status (0% - 0%) "475 magekiller" double 'poison' status (100% - 0%) in the succubus armor shack (in the 'chapter 4' version) the first dialogue start putting the [1834: Met Armor Succubus] ON, but that swich should store the information if the party meets the succubus armorer during the 3AW. during the 3AW in two occasions (aram battleground and orc summit aftermath) if you can choose to send the reserve troops, but actually don't there are some negative effect, but if no troop can be spared there aren't no effect on the war stat, it is an oversight or a 'mercy' for a suboptimal game already suffering for many drawbacks? in the headquarter magic lab the wendis picture is nearly covered by wynn table, put it in the right/left title should be make it more visible. this is a very little thing, but I very would like saving with simon sit on the throne, but the interaction with the throne prevent this, can you make 'walkable' the throne itself (with the 180° rotation of the sprite? *puppy dog eyes* the HQ map order and sequence in rpgmaker hurt so much my aesthetic feeling, the 'root' HQ map should be an empty one, with all the real map nested in that one. in the game there is a 'preview event' (I try to take this more obliquely possible). the choice made is a definitive on, like the couple there are in the game or an ongoing process meaning the order of them?

sierralee

Thank you for the bug reports, I'm glad there are people looking at the game closely. However, in every case with double poison status, my intention was the 0%, which should overwrite the previous instance. I will change them if there's a reason, but I would prefer not to spend a lot of time on mistakes that have zero impact on the actual game. Aramite Reinforcement: It's intentional. Though I like tradeoffs, I also like to have some cases where you can simply spend resources to gain an advantage. Throne: As the throne is a single event, not tiles, I don't see any way to do this that wouldn't be extremely tedious to event. Map: I don't understand what you're trying to say here. Preview: Definitive choice.

About DoW - Played Version 1.08 for about 8 hours and I agree, when the full assets become available and some plot points are filled the game should be very good. Interesting characters, good world building, great writing. With so little to judge on I can't comment on the art, but I think it will be good from what was shown. Hopefully they draw tentacles well :) There was a conversation that made no sense (the wastes village - there was no follow up) but I'm sure that will be fixed. Ready to give a great review on Steam once I play the full thing. The thing that pisses me off about Steam is that you have to search for a de-censoring patch for their adult games, but I am guessing this will be made easily available to patrons.

sierralee

Glad you like what you've played! And thank you very much for reviewing on Steam, it really helps. ^-^ As for the patch, I try to always have a link easily available on the game's page on my blog.

Re: Ouroboros release on Steam - if you can get people to download/buy it on Steam within the first 3 hours (I think is the cutoff time), especially if they type "Ouroboros" in the Search bar - your ranking will rise dramatically enough that it might still be a good thing, shovelware perception or not. A good but small reputation is only seen as crap by Steam if you have steady sales and a small entry - Steam likes big spikes at the beginning to rank up on its algorithm, which will give Ouroboros more exposure (and assuming the spikes keep going, it'll keep being advertised by Steam) Just a thought - if you could organize a bunch of people to buy at the same time, even a $1 price might be worthwhile for the exposure it'll get.

Can't Wait

The main problem I see with Ouroboros being released on steam for one dollar is that it will set an expectation about pricing on other games. I don't know exactly how everything works, but if you could set the price higher and start your release of Ouroboros with a massive sale that effectively lowers it's price to the dollar range it might be better. Plus people love buying things on sale. Price sets an expectation of value regardless of how much a product is actually worth.

sierralee

This is generally true as far as I know, but there aren't many good ways to engineer a surge of sales.

Bloody_Hadouken

There is a site I read about just a few moments ago, on yet another different site, which from other comments seems to be a less imposing, specifically adult orientated Patreon. I'm not going to go into details due to obvious reasons. But, I'll pass on what I know if it interests you Sierra. Not about to leave Simon and all his ladies to Patreons nonsense if I can help it.

sierralee

I've tried to keep tabs on all the alternatives, but it's always possible that I've missed something! Feel free to message me with the info.

Zyrus

So, it looks like I'm going to have to be 'that guy' for the first time in my time playing this: With the revelation that Tyna has been getting more royal assignments from nothing matters guy, this entire section feels redundant and misleading. Not only would Tyna giving that information at the start changed my opinion of everything before it, it gives the decided impression that we're basically just deciding her future husband. Not only that, we don't get nearly enough information on any of the candidates or their policies to make any sort of informed decisions. I get what you tried to do here... but I'm just left from this section with the feeling of playing matchmaker for a teenager, not doing scheming to ensure stability and good fortune for Arclent and the Doom King Domains.

sierralee

Uh, any particular reason you're commenting on a post almost two months old? If I didn't get email notifications, I'd have missed it entirely. Anyway, thanks for giving your feedback! I'm sorry this section disappointed you. While you're correct that you'll be choosing Tyna's husband, many of the candidates are not potential husbands - they're Tyna's rivals even if she takes the throne. How well you undermined her strongest rivals has some effect now and will have a stronger effect in the future. You can also make two alliances with major political leaders that will have an impact later in the game. Marriage is very political in hereditary monarchies, and I was trying to capture that - maybe not successfully, but that was my goal. Not having enough information on the candidates is a concern that I could potentially do more about. I tried to include an introduction for each of them, but I will reflect on if more could be done.

I'd rank the options for a fanart repository: 1. HentaiFoundry, 2. Tumblr, 3. Imgur. My bet is HF gets you the most visibility because of the front page. A tumblr also seems a solid choice. I'd definitely release Ouroboros on Steam. Getting the game trailer and screenshots right is going to be important, as you'll want to show off your sharp writing and excellent characters. I'd definitely sell it for more than $1. $4.99 is still in my impulse buy range.

Desertopa

Ouroboros is such a good game, selling it for $1 is almost an affront to my sensibilities. I actually think that making it that cheap might lower audience expectations more than distributing it for free. It's probably best to set the price low enough that people will buy it as a whim purchase, but I think you can probably set it well over a dollar and not significantly reduce your number of purchases. My inclination would be to set the price around $2.99-4.99, cheaper than most RPGMaker games on Steam, but not at the bottom of the barrel. If you set the price *too* low, you might actually even end up cheating yourself out of the best audience access, if you end up selectively targeting the players who're undiscerning enough that they usually go for the really cheap RPGMaker games available on Steam. I'm speaking from intuition rather than experience here, so I can't say for sure this is the best way to go. I think Ouroboros is a very good advertisement for your other work though, so if you get it to a broader audience I think it could get you some good lasting audience retention.

Anonymous

Never put a game on Steam for less than $4.99. People will assume it's shovelware, and that's going to color their perception of it. Also, make sure you have the listed release date match the original release date, not when it was put on Steam.

Lord Forte

Going to agree with this personally, I tend to assume the worst about anything that's priced hugely cheap on Steam when I see it, especially since rpg maker games already get harsh judging on there. Going too cheap kind of plays into the stereotypes you want to avoid. For example, SakuraGame stuff (cheap, machine-translated games) is all in the $2-4 range. Although I guess from a purely business standpoint, that model has obviously brought them success, I don't think it's the kind of precedent you'd want to seem like you were following.

Anonymous

Ouroboros could also work well on Gamejolt I think where you set a price at 2 to 5 ... and you do already have TLS there too :) with a complete game like Orobobos it could help you even more :) Steam is not really something I prefer to use for H-games to be honest and the eviroment can be toxic when it comes to games like this.

Dubsington

1) Woohoo! I started playing that game and liked it a lot, has a very TLS feel (that's an enormous complement). I was only an hour into it when you posted that you were putting in art, so I've been holding out for the full release. 2) I like makersupport.com myself. Either their search engine improved or they've added a ton of new creators. They are still a young platform, but their explicit free speech commitment sounds unshakeable. One creator I followed has already moved there (from here). 3) Followed. 4) On Steam, $1 games are invariably crap. You might actually move more units at a $2.99 price point, particularly if you make it clear that this was a pricier game that is being re-released at a lower price on Steam. A lot of adult games on Steam have a link to a free plugin that unlocks the full content; apparently Steam is unclear about boobies but has zero problem with booby-plugin-compatability.

Retromancer

I'd agree with the fanart repository rank. HentaiFoundry is how I found a number of games I follow now (Roundscape, Queen Opala). But I usually find them through word of mouth - things like Discord, or other game forums. I absolutely love the idea but if it takes too much time to maintain and takes away from games then no.

sierralee

Thank you for the feedback! On the subject of Steam prices, since so many people commented, I think I will make a separate comment chain.

sierralee

Ouroboros is already up on GameJolt! As for using Steam for h-games, you're not the only person to feel that way. That's one reason I'll always put my games up on other platforms, too. But from a business perspective, it's the biggest game in town by orders of magnitude.

sierralee

1) Hope you enjoy the full version later this month. ^-^ 2) I never like to shoot down people's suggestions, but the reason I haven't used MakerSupport is that it is using the same payment processors that Patreon is, and the payment processors are the ones ultimately responsible for the crackdown. If MakerSupport ever became a large platform, it would face the same choice of compromising its free speech commitment or being shut down. 3) Thanks! 4) On the subject of Steam prices, since so many people commented, I think I will make a separate comment chain. As for Steam's policy on adult content and patches, the water is extremely muddy. =/

sierralee

Well, I did not anticipate so many people voicing the same opinion about the Ouroboros idea. That's why I asked, though! Happy to get feedback from people, but I have to say now I'm more uncertain about things. Everyone consistently said that $1 games are presumed to be shovelware, which is useful feedback for me. It's something I'll weigh in my thoughts, and I welcome further input. Having said that, to explain my thinking, in the current Steam store, I think being perceived as shovelware is a lesser danger than being completely lost in the sea of games. From the perspective of the Steam algorithm, as near as I can tell from the analytics, having a good but small reputation is basically equivalent to having no reputation at all. One useful data point will be how Steam responds to DoW. I'm not particularly confident that it will be well-received either, so the reaction might inform my decision on Ouroboros. Opinions still welcome, of course.

Desertopa

As far as Steam reputation goes, I'm not sure how much attention it would get you in the grand scheme, but I think that if you gave Steam keys to your patrons, and encouraged them to review the game, you'd probably get a significantly higher volume of reviews than most RPGMaker game developers do, even before getting any new sales. Maybe this is frowned on as brigading? But it seems essentially fair to me, all the reviewers are actual players offering their opinions. Admittedly, there's a significant filtering effect, since we wouldn't be you patrons if we weren't fans of your work, but at this level, reviews function largely as an attention mechanism, and your game has legitimately earned the attention. At the very least, I can offer an advance commitment to leave a review.

Bladestorm

1) Can't wait to play it in it's complete form. 2) wish I could suggest a good alternative to Patreon but can't think of a good one without doing some searching. 4) I recommend tumbler page for a fanart page.

I addition to/instead of a fanart repository I'd really love for there to be a tls or SierraLee subreddit. As it stands the best place to discuss tls is on the wiki, and wikia's system leaves a lot to be desired. It might be more work to set up than you're willing to take on, but I think it could greatly benefit the community. Decanter and that other person with the anime-girl avatar have been doing a great job maintaining the wiki. They would probably make good moderators if you didn't want to have to run a subreddit on the day-to-day. Anyway thanks for reading this. I know you're already juggling a million things so i understand if you don't think it would be a good fit.

sierralee

Hmm! A subreddit is an idea I had not really considered. If there's enough interest for it, though, I think it's not a bad idea. Having said that, I cannot claim to be a heavy Reddit user and I'm not sure I would be the best person to create it. If other people wanted to get together for one, though, I'd link it as an official subreddit.

Edward Culham

Began replaying the game and wondering about are attacking Ravel, you can hire mercenaries before hand and wondering why the back team does not get any of the mercenaries

genericname12345

Any eta on Desecration of Wings release date? I'm burning a hole in my seat from anticipation.

sierralee

I'm aiming for February 23, so you'd better reinforce your seat. Though actually, you qualify for early testing. I could send you the first build with all the assets included?

Decanter

That is a good point. Maybe mercs have some code about not attacking each other unprovoked, at least unless it's part of a larger conflict?

MadChemist19

Loving the new updates for TLS, my current playthrough is at 50 hours. So glad I found your stuff! Loved the new sex scenes for Wynn and Janine, an interesting balance between sweet and sexy! Anyway, just wanted to suggest that after you finish clearing the new tunnel in eustrin (the southwest tunnels I think) it'd be nice to have a piece of dialogue acknowledging that fact from the dwarf who sent you down there. hope the search for alternative platforms goes well!

sierralee

Thanks, always glad to hear people enjoying scenes like those. ^-^ Your request is pretty reasonable. Right now there's no real check for having cleared the tunnel, but I'll keep it in mind.
