With Patreon accounts there is a tendency to constantly stress the amount of work that goes into our games. Some of this is gratitude for everyone who supports us, but I worry that at times it's a cynical PR gambit: "WE ARE WORKING 20 HOURS PER DAY UNTIL OUR FINGERS BLEED I HAVE NOT EATEN IN DAYS" and so on.

I've always tried to be more direct here, and I'm honestly not sure to what degree that's wise. Patrons do often approve of my openness, but I also get negative reactions outside Patreon every time I'm honest about spending time on anything other than someone's project of choice. I wonder if it wouldn't be more effective to just give less information and keep working on the balance I find most efficient.

Having said that, this post will be the opposite of that. To be honest, this past week I did not spend a ton of time working on TLS. What does that look like? Let me tell you!

First, "not a ton" doesn't mean I did nothing on TLS. Here's some stuff I did:

 - Getting feedback and corresponding with fans via forums/emails/etc.

 - Fixed lingering bugs in the Eustrin/Aram content. Those of you who sent them know that there were more than a few.

 - Did organizing work for the next update. What this means practically is taking notes from different places (general plot, character arcs, NPC notes, double tech list, etc) and putting them all into a list of the content I want to include in the update.

 - Wrote content for the new Yhilin iteration. All the characters' chat lines, NPCs, that kind of thing.

 - Wrote a sex scene that won't even be in the next version. I was thinking about future plans and had the scene so clearly in mind, I figured I might as well write it. It is, uh, different from any scene in the game so far, or any scene I've ever read in any adult game.

 - Wrote various bits and pieces, like Dari responding to you doing research on her condition or the end of Yarra's recruitment quest.

 - Commissioned an artist for some TLS art that you guys will hopefully see in a week or two.

See, this is where I wonder if an honest framing isn't shooting myself in the foot. It would be really easy to write up that work as a huge ordeal that took the whole week. But honestly, that's only a fraction of my usual productive capacity.

So, what took up the rest of the time? Multiple things:

Kingdom of Deception: Hreinn Games put out a limited release for our upcoming game (a hardware test) and I finished my end of an impending preview release. That meant a flurry of changes, bugtesting, and assorted work relating to the uploads and such.

Taxes: Not 2016 taxes; I did those back in February. But apparently I'm going to have to make quarterly estimated payments now, so I had to figure that out. -_- It wasn't as bad as I thought, but it's a pain to avoid getting penalized when you have unpredictable income.

Ouroboros Support: Reviews and messages are still coming in for the Newgrounds version, and that version has led to increasing questions about other versions as well. Most notably, we've had more Linux/Android users asking specific questions, so I had to help with those.

Side Project #1: This is one I've alluded to that I hope to be able to release before too long. It's a VN, and I just did the final edit of all the text. Also finished up some final work, so the release of this has mostly to do with missing assets and scheduling. My work is basically done.

Side Project #2: This one is Desecration of Wings, which I already previewed here for $10 backers. I approved some lineart and coloring, but otherwise it's still just puttering along.

Side Project #3: This project is the furthest out, some aspects of it still hazy. Well, after this week, it is way less hazy - I wrote a large chunk of the plot and I'm really happy with how things turned out. I felt enthusiastic enough that I wrote up a preview that I'll show to $10 patrons, but I'll delay posting that while I focus on other stuff.

So there you have it: that is what a scattered week looks like for me.

I do worry that some people might think, "Sierra is dividing her effort between a bunch of things and won't finish any of them" - and I do think that's a potentially legitimate criticism. But the thing is, most of that isn't dividing my attentions, that's just what the development process actually looks like. The editing on SP#1 and the writing for SP#3 took up significant chunks of development time. There was somewhat more KoD than usual. But otherwise? That's how I normally operate while also trying to make major progress on TLS.

Well, I hope this has been an interesting look into how my workflow goes. Though I'm not sure how the coming week will go, it's likely it will involve mostly TLS work.

If it makes you feel better, you are different from the majority of developers in a very important way: you release content. I enjoy your frequent updates, as well as the detail you put into them. it shows you're thinking of us, your fans, and trying to stay faithful to this massive thing you've committed to. Speaking from experience only on the supporter side of things, there have been a number of times I have found something interesting or fun to support. The developer releases something promising, and then I wait in anticipation for the next release. And wait. Aaaaaaand wait. Hearing nothing from the developer for weeks, sometimes months, I finally see activity on the Patreon page, or blog, or wherever. Excitedly I look to see what's up, and see something along the lines of: "I know it's been forever, and you pay me money to see more of this project, but life is just really hard so I haven't had time. Oh, but I started a new project that you should totes check out!" If people get angsty, I think it's because they worry you'll pull this kind of shenanigan. You've already shown you won't though in my opinion. TL;DR Keep it coming Sierra Lee. You're doing awesome!

I'm fine with this honesty in what your working on and such. It's much more reassuring then creators who only update once a month or so with only a few sentences on whats been going on. Also, while TLS is my jam out of all your works, throwing a tantrum over you not spending every waking moment working on it is pretty childish.

I'm amazed you can keep that many balls in the air. At work I tend to get very absorbed in one thing at a time, and it's quite disruptive to my mental flow to switch to another task or even be interrupted to be asked a question. Programming is such an abstract thing that it takes me a while to flush my mental state to disk, as it were, to free up any spare capacity to deal with side tasks or (the horrors!) human interaction. I wish I was able to handle as many simultaneous threads as you seem to be able to (OK, enough with the brain/CPU analogies). With regards to those who might criticise you for not working on their favourite thing 24/7, I suspect they're the kind of person who'll find something to gripe about no matter what ("hi siera y havent u added an option for simon 2 b a futa that would be really hot oh and can u also add pregnancy and foot fetish thanks", and so on). Not everyone is as good at delayed gratification as Yarra... While I do recognise that there's a commercial side to things and it makes sense for you to cater to your audience, I think there's a lot to be said for the Patreon workflow in that you have the artistic freedom to explore other avenues rather than constantly slaving to hit deadlines on a single project. I'd imagine that most people are here for TLS first and foremost, but side projects like Ouroboros seem to go down pretty well too (I know I enjoyed it!), so I think your current approach is just fine. We're supporting you, not any specific project, and you've shown time and again that you can be relied on to deliver :-)

I do generally hope that people who make things I like are robots that never tire or do anything else, but I reign myself in. Not everyone can be Andrew Hussie.

I, at least, appreciate the honesty and openness. You're frequent and reliable with your updates, so that helps allay any fears that you're not working—evidence suggests that the amount of work you do on TLS is sufficient to maintain a respectable pace. In magical Christmasland, maybe you'd be spending all your time and effort on the things I want you to make. But from my real-world experience with creative projects, that isn't sustainable. People who try to do that either slow down to a manageable pace or burn out and stop working on making the things I want altogether.

Forgotten Legacy

I think you are more critical of yourself than any patreon supporter would be. When you release updates they are very detail oriented and not small in any way. You are a step above others making games on Patreon. Cut yourself some slack.

I think that the honesty and transparency goes a long way to fostering trust. If nothing else, if you hear from the loudest people in the room that you're not working enough on the game, I think the progress so far should demonstrate precisely the opposite. That is not to say not to analyze and evaluate your schedule, but more that other people do not necessarily know the needs of your work as well as you do. If nothing else, I'd say to take comfort in the support you've gotten here, and I do personally enjoy your weekly updates.

Hakkira

Honesty and transparancy is the way to go in my mind also so keep doing what your doing as even when working on other projects I imagine that sometimes they can help inspire content for TLS also :)

Robert Arctor

You consistently generate quality content, and you've been juggling multiple projects for quite some time now; I don't think anybody's worried about your abilities. I for one greatly appreciate your honesty, and I really like to see the workflow behind the scenes. I am so intrigued by that 'uh, different' sex scene, I can't stop wondering - two opponents facing off over a chess board? A duet between two musical instruments? Inquiring minds want to know!

Kyle S

I was going to Wright a long heartfelt comment. But everyone else did that already. So here's me saying ditto. Love your work keep on keeping on ;)

sierralee

The upcoming scene is... shall we say, not terribly sexy. Ever since I started this story with sex as a major component of the world, there were a number of unusual things I wanted to include. This is one of those, so I hope everyone feels it's appropriate in context!

EG Douglas

That saying "A change is as good as a rest" is applicable, I feel. Doing the one thing constantly gets old, then annoying, then you stop. Like eating just the same meal or only having one track of music. And, as others have said, a critical point is that you do regularly release content.

Dorago

Well, I'm more in the idea that I support a person than a project, and well, up until now everything you have released gave me satisfaction so the more project you work, the more fun I will have ^^ However don't work too hard, your health is important too :)

Sower of Systems

I hope that others feel, as I do, that the amount of work you put into TLS right now would be sufficient when were you not working on other projects simultaneously. You're only one person and the amount of content in each major update feels greater to me in TLS than I see in similar sections of game made by teams. Keep being awesome!

Badger66

I think honestly you use these updates as not just a way to tell us about the progress in the game, but as a way to kind of unload about things. Also, as said numerous times before me you letting us know about how much or how little you do builds that trust because you are keeping us updated. I will say this, out of all the projects I support, you are one of the most consistent in releasing content and the content you release has never personally disappointed me. So, my point is keep up the great work and post whatever the heck you want to post. Ignore the nastiness of a few assholes just because you need to take a break from the game.

wootifus

You do you, if that means taking time away from one project to focus on another so be it. Besides if you spend to much time and effort into one single project you'll just burn yourself out and make it that much harder to focus on said project later.

Dubsington

As long as you keep releasing, you're fine. One of the problems with internet communication is that it amplifies the apparent importance of noisy minorities; upset people are more likely to post than content ones. I learned a hard lesson when I used to do freelance consulting: I have to work at the pace I am comfortable with, and accept that there is a chance that a client won't like it. I found that in practice this policy had a very, very small impact on my client list and a very big impact on my happiness and sanity. That being said, it's very natural to doubt yourself when someone who represents the customer questions your commitment level-- you just have to bear in mind that with a pool the size of you fan base it is inevitable. TL,DR: Mind the pledge number more than the comments. It's the true barometer. Some people might grumble but the important metric says you're doing things right.

Lord Forte

I'm going to agree with the others who say transparency overall is a good thing, and I say this not only from my experience here, which has definitely led me to feel that whatever you feel like working on will probably be something good, but also from my many frustrating experience with developer opaqueness. Speaking as a longtime player of MMOs, there's nothing more frustrating that developer silence on an important issue, be that scheduling, intended design, or reasoning for an unpopular change. And my experience is that just being transparent, open, and willing to engage with feedback is, in the end, far more satisfying than any sense that you're working especially hard. You're nothing if not those three things, and I think your success and the nature of the fan community you've cultivated is proof that that approach works. So definitely count me amongst those who think you do more than enough as it is. ^^ Don't let the impatient people get to you, there will always be people who want more, no matter what you give them. And in general they aren't very good fans anyway, in my personal opinion.

Foo Bar

Replying here just to say that I'm more a fan of your work in general than any specific game. I could see that a lot of people would be into a specific game and only care about progress on that. But, rolling with your inspiration when it comes will generally result in better content being released. So, even from a totally selfish point of view, you doing what you do best is best for me.

Dustin null

An interesting note is that while others may find the split of your attention dangerous for finishing "the current" project. i find it to be the exact opposite. It means that you have simply learned how to streamline your time with multiple projects and still meet general goals. Moreover something you have others don't is credit. by that I mean you have already finished products out there if I am not mistaken. The ones who try to spread them selves thin are usually the ones who have never finished making a game or product of any kind. So keep doing what you are doing.

Secular Reason

Two things: First, you've already shown that you can complete games. Sure Ouroboros was shorter than TLS, but it's still a completed game, as is the League of Legends parody. Second, who cares what those outside of Patreon think? They aren't donating their hard earned money. We are. They just sit back and await a free game. Fuck em'.

Decanter

Non-patrons still contribute to word-of-mouth and are potential patrons. "Fuck 'em" is a dangerous mentality to embrace too hard.

First i love your creativity and your jobs. Second i prefer you take your time to make a good game. Third your work on other project, no problem to me because i will play on this game and i'm sure i enjoy this. i'm a patreon for other game and release on this games take more and less time. So to conclude keep your pleasure and creativity to make game, i'll support you.

Love TLS amazingly outstanding and hillarious over all keep it up and i am glad i became a follwer of this game cant wait for more to come in the future :D
