Hi everyone!! Here we are beginning the series Firefly! Going in, I really did not expect what I ended up seeing (a futuristic, every man for himself sort of universe) but it was a pleasant surprise. After watching Cowboy Bebop I have a new found love for this type of genre or storyline so can't wait to see where the crew leads us in the next episode 😊

Gotta hear your thoughts!!  Drop em in the comments friends  ❤️

Hi Vicky.. when you finish this show.. please do the Movie "Serenity" thats the follow-up of the show.

I wasn't watching much TV at the time, but I don't feel like there was much buzz about the show beforehand. Also, the commercials FOX put out made it look uninteresting and cheesy. I just had no interest, and I think that's because FOX had no interest in seeing it succeed. From what I gather, they showed it at various timeslots (to accommodate sports) and also aired it out of order. It's a shame it got fumbled due to incompetence. Looking forward to watching along with the rest of the episodes and the movie!!

Super excited for this series! One of my all time favorites. It's at times a bit cheesy, a bit campy, a bit low budget, yet TOTALLY ENDEARING, wonderfully surprising, and absolutely holds up in my opinion. And the characters are incredible throughout. You're totally right that it's got Bebop vibes, and I might argue some Mandalorian vibes as well. (Fun Factoid: the costume designer we have on Mandalorian was brought on board due in part to her work as costume designer on Firefly!)

This show to many long-time Star Wars fans was exactly what we had been waiting for for decades. This is a crew of smugglers and petty-thieves. Imagine Captain Mal as Han Solo and the "Serenity" as the Millennium Falcon" They are speaking English and Chinese because on "Earth that was", those were the two main superpowers that colonized space, and it's showing that the two cultures have melded and become one. "Companions" are required to register with the Guild and are very high-society in the Alliance. Inara's presence allows "Serenity" to access places that it normally couldn't go. The executives at FOX had absolutely no idea what to do with this show. They aired the episodes out of order because they didn't like "Serenity" as a first episode. They put it in the Friday Night timeslot, which on FOX was a death knell for the last 30 shows put there. That and FOX in general was trigger-happy with cancelling shows at the time. Undeclared, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Arrested Development, and Wonderfalls - along with Joss Whedon's next idea (Dollhouse) all met a similar fate. The SciFi Channel (later called SyFy) had the opportunity to pick the show up when FOX dropped it, but they were focused on their "Stupid, Horrible, Monster-Movie-Of-The-Week" idea at the time and seriously dropped the ball.

Really glad you liked it. The first episode is longer than the rest, but every episode is jam packed. It just gets better and better. You might also like Deadwood which is an HBO series. Not a lot of people on Youtube talk about it, but its some of the best television ever written. I actually like it more than Firefly, which I like a lot.

Deadwood is definitely my favorite show of all time, it's just not exactly the type of thing to "react" to.

As someone who does not like the Mandalorian, I'm very excited for you to watch Firefly, which is basically the closest thing to live action Cowboy Bebop that's been made. Lots of character writing and nice little moments.

So glad to see you watching this series. I wish there was more, but it shouldn't take too long to see everything. Most episodes are 1 hr, that was the longer intro episode. Of course, you'll have to watch the movie after the series, it does a lot to 'wrap up' the season. Sadly, it was cancelled mostly due to terrible mismanagement by Fox. Pretty much before it hit the air they were already shelving it, airing it in the worst performing TV timeslot (Friday nights) and not promoting it well. Also, part of what makes it such a great and unique show also makes it somewhat niche, which is bad for network TV. This is the kind of show that could have had multiple seasons on cable or Netflix (or another stream), but underperforms by network standards. Plus, not the cheapest show to make, either.

So stoked for you that you’ve finally discovered Firefly, Vicky! You’re gonna love it. Just so you’re aware, Mandarin is spoken by more people than any other language, so it is used throughout the series, usually in place of expletives. There are no subtitles when it happens, however you can understand through context. As I’ve always said, there are 2 types of people in the world, those that can extrapolate information from an incomplete data set……

Here's a webpage that has the translations, but for anyone who hasn't seen all the episodes yet, I'd wait. :) https://firefly.fandom.com/wiki/Dictionary

I left this on the Youtube comments section, but I'm not sure Vicky reads them? I'll paste it here too:

Also, Alan Tudyk plays Wash the pilot. You might know him from A Knight's Tale? I wouldn't go researching the show too much to avoid spoilers. He also voiced the droid K-2SO that you liked so much in A Rogue Story. He also plays a villain in the 2nd season of the show I recommended next "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency." He is also in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil which is a hilarious spoof of the teens in the woods horror movies.

Yeah now we got two shows in space, that’s a connection, Count Duku from Star Wars is on Lord of the rings, The captain from Firefly was the fake Ryan on saving private Ryan.

Flukemarm

Oh man I forgot about Alan Tudyk in Dirk Gently, that was fun.

"Why do they all speak Chinese?" Yeah, the concept was that America and China were the superpowers of the world when humans had to evacuate "Earth-that-was", so their culture in this far future setting is a mix of American and Chinese, so they all speak both English and Chinese. The reason this excellent show got cancelled is kinda' complex, but it mostly boils down to "FOX did everything they could to sabotage the show because they didn't like Joss Whedon". That's an oversimplified explanation, but there are a lot of articles and reading material out there exploring the reason why the show got axed (before the whole first season even aired fully; they didn't even air all 14 episodes!). If you like this show, I highly recommend you check out The Expanse if you haven't already. Another great and well grounded sci-fi, that's been going for a handful of seasons so far. Lovin' your reactions. I was watching the show as it aired, so I always love to see a first timer's reaction to this masterpiece of television :)

When Summer Glau got into the box nude she asked, "Does this make me look fat?"

MertzRocks

The first season didn't even all get produced. There should have been about 22 episodes--maybe 21 counting the pilot as two... It's only a partial season all told.
