Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back | Full Length Reaction

RX2904

I love it! But is your video really just 360p resolution? I want to watch it fullscreen and that's a tad small. :)

I noticed that as well. She is moving and probably only had access to her cell for recording or something.

Best Star Wars Episode of them all.

generic_sauce

Another great reaction! lol and now you see why so many folks consider this the best Star Wars of the original trilogy, it's a true classic that delivers on all fronts.

Anakin Starkiller

This is the most epic Star Wars ever made even more so than the recent films. It just has everything you could ever want in a Star Wars film .

Imagine being 9 years old, watching this in the theater a good 15 years before the internet was really a thing, having no idea that plot twist is coming. And then having to wait three years for the next movie.

JMCN1990

The wait is over! I'm so glad you loved it. You seemed to pick up on things MUCH better this time around. You actually correctly predicted many things and you even knew Boba Fett! I told you the pieces would start falling in place. Empire is such a beautifully done film. The cold and dreary settings of Hoth, Dagobah and even the bowels of Cloud City on Bespin contrast perfectly with the warmth and brightness that defined many of the sets used in Episode IV. It was a much darker movie and that is exactly what the franchise needed. It showed that the good guys don't always win. It went completely against the grain and bucked every trend. The young hero loses his hand, the brash smuggler gets the girl, the bounty hunter successfully collects his prize and the wise old master is a silly two foot tall green creature. There is no happy ending. Combine that brilliant writing with ground breaking special effects (this movie is 41 years old!), one of the largest budgets ever for a movie up to that point and one of the most shocking twists in the history of cinema and it's easy to see why ESB is considered one of if not the greatest sequels of all time. One thing I noticed though is you seemed a little confused when Yoda and Obi-Wan had mentioned losing Vader to the dark side and didn't understand the connection there. In the first movie you watched, when Obi-Wan takes Luke to his hut on Tatooine and is explaining things to him, he mentions that Darth Vader was a pupil of his before he turned to evil. I suggest you go back and watch that scene because all of that dialogue is very important. I understand there's so much to process and it's hard to remember everything, that's why it's important you watch the next one ASAP so the previous movie is still fresh in your mind. Also, you kind of picked up on it but just in case you didn't fully understand...Yoda was acting silly at first because he was testing Luke's patience. Traits like impatience, anger and fear are all things that lead to the dark side of the force and Yoda knows this obviously. Luke failed that test, which is why Yoda seemed reluctant to train him and Obi-Wan had to step in and vouch for him. Now you understand why Yoda said he senses much anger in Luke "like his father". Luke also failed the test in the cave. He brought his weapons even though Yoda instructed him not to, and he also failed when he saw the fake Vader and immediately struck him down in fear. That is why it showed Luke's face in Vader's helmet, it was supposed to symbolize that Luke was showing signs of the dark side. Last thing, funny you mention the similarity in the music between Jaws and Star Wars. The legend himself John Williams composed the score for both! Another thing you picked up on brilliantly. When you finish all the movies you should watch the documentary called "Empire of Dreams". It's about 2.5 hours long and available on Youtube. A reaction to that would be awesome but you should watch it either way. It explains the backstory of Lucas, the creation of Lucasfilm, how he secured the deal and finances for the first movie, how he created all three movies of the original trilogy. The music, the props, the special effects, the sets, the sound effects (yes they even explain how they made the Chewbacca noises) and how they did the puppets. There are also a lot of bloopers and behind the scenes of the actors and producers on set during filming as well as interviews with Lucas and the all of the major cast. Lucas also delves into his inspirations for writing, like mythology and stuff. Can't wait for Episode VI and the prequels! This ride isn't close to being over.

Great reaction! Keep up the good work.

All the games are set across the entire Star Wars universe. Beings that The Mandalorian is so popular I'm sure that that part will come up in future games soon.

I do think when your done with the original trilogy if you haven't seen it you should definitely do Spaceballs. You'll get the jokes more 🤣

Line: "I know" worked better for the Han Solo character. They tried with "I love you, too" but it just didn't fit the Han character. I think it was an adlibbed line.

Just wanted to say I am really enjoying your Star Wars journey! Thank you for sharing it with us, can’t wait to see your reaction to the rest of the movies!

A few comments. It is true that Mark Hamill was in a bad car accident before shooting started. The doctors did a good job reconstructing his face, but you could tell. Rumour has it that the entire wampa sequence (wampa is the name of the creature) was added to explain it. I doubt that that's entirely true, since it's important to set Luke off on his quest, but they clearly made his injuries match. Hoth was shot in my home country of Norway. Specifically, the small mountain town of Finse. It certainly got the attention of Norwegian newspapers that "Star Wars 2 is shooting at Finse!" The original movie was only known as Star Wars at the time, so I guess the first big surprise of the sequel was that it was called "Episode V." :-) Norwegian movie poster artist Tore Stang made a humorous fake poster of R2-D2 skiing. I was a bit disappointed that that wasn't in the movie. :-D And yes, it was a strain for Mark to shoot the scenes in the snow. Everybody else were comfy in the hotel, while they shot him through the open front door. Good catch that the music reminded you of Jaws. Both scores were by John Williams. This movie was the first time we heard the famous "March of the Empire," also known as Darth Vader's Theme. There's no trickery done with Yoda's voice. The puppet is both controlled by and voiced by Frank Oz, otherwise probably best known as Muppet characters Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear, among others. There was no specific book or anything that George Lucas adapted. Apparently, he did originally think about adapting Flash Gordon, but he couldn't get the rights, so he made an original story. However, there's plenty of inspiration to find. Aside from Flash Gordon, he borrowed both from old westerns, and Akira Kurosawa's samurai flicks. You should watch "The Hidden Fortress" some time, and marvel at the similarities. He also studied what's known as "the hero's journey," the structure supposedly common in all mythological tales of old, and examined in depth in Joseph Campbell's book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." The movie is set a few years after the first. I think the canonical answer is three years. Many Star Wars authorities count years in terms of the Battle of Yavin, Before (BBY) and After (ABY). So The Empire Strikes Back takes place in year 3 ABY.

It was not ad-libbed, but they struggled with it. If you read the comic, his line is "Just you remember that, because I'll be back." Which was probably the original line in the script. I'm not sure exactly who came up with "I know," but mostly I hear it credited to director Irwin Kershner.

Great reaction! I have become an instant fan of yours! You seem to pick up on things very quickly and you have great insight and commentary. Keep it up :) Personally, the empire strikes back is my favorite of any star wars movie. To me, it is the perfect movie. I love watching others watch this incredible movie for the first time. Really glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to you watching the return of the jedi!

For me this for sure is one of the best Star Wars movies ever, it has alot, sadness, darkness, hero moments, great characters and story, some hope and a great portrait of both sides. Just love it
