I'd say part of the reason for the Bumi change is there was no way of hiding the Bumi reveal from the fans.

I just realized that they changed the love story of oma & shu to 2 girls ❤️

I loved that little switch! I noticed it first and thought they had changed it in a bad way; the animated series the male dies. So at first I thought they were doing a "Girl in the fridge" trope to the Omashu backstory, and was fairly pissed.... for about 3 seconds. Super clever twist and use of inclusiveness! xD

I didn't care for the Bumi portrayal at first. Didn't hate it, but it kinda felt off, BUT I like it as it gives Aang a chance to be the "bright eyed kid" without it being too much. His kinda over-the-top manipulation with the kinda dark creepy-ish vibes of all the lighting being green crystals worked as a good counter balance for Aang to be the idealist in the face of extreme cynicism ... I think it worked!

You make a very good point. Counterbalancing Aang's chipperness with Bumi's sourness makes a lot of sense and sticks with the overall tone of the show. I still don't necessarily enjoy the character, but perhaps I'll have a change of heart on a future rewatch.

One minor thing: there’s no way a live action ostrich horse will be anything but silly, but I love that they gave us that anyway.

I actually liked the way they changed the character of Bumi here, feels a lot more realistic in a way, especially in live action. Imagine living through a century of war and horror.

When the earth bender started telling his story, you said he has a right to be Angry. Bumi also has the right to be angry, which you mentioned later. Bumi was teaching Aang different lessons of what Bumi thought the Avatar should be. Bumi lost hope. The theme of this series is Remember who you are. Its Aang finding himself. Now that Bumi has his hope renewed. Future Bumi will be a bit more silly.

I’m not gonna lie, at first I really didn’t like the Bumi portrayal. I didn’t want an over the top characterization but I still sort of expected a kind of kooky and fun Bumi. After the previous episodes I thought they might make him a bit more serious just based off the tone of the episodes so far but in my head, I thought well at least they might make flashback (if we did get one) Bumi like that, and maybe still a little of it in the present. But after the first watch, I was even more upset about it cause we didn’t even see it in the flashback! However, I have since been watching a lot of reactors watch this and I have since had a bit of softening on it. Mainly because with how serious the show is, it really does make sense to have Bumi be how he was, it made it more realistic as opposed to in the cartoon. It just really showed how the war has changed people and how drastically the world has changed as well. The contrast between Aang and Bumi really emphasizes it and I’ve come to like it now.
