To answer your question, yes earthbending is absolutely the right term since, technically speaking, Earth isn't the actual name of our planet. The translation of the word is essentially "the ground". It's common vernacular name is Earth, but technically it has no name. So if they were to do that style of bending on any planet, earthbending would likely still be the proper term.

I will never understand the backlash against this episode. It's a filler episode that demonstrates the purpose of the avatar as a mediator and a bridge between people. It is not terrible. I have no idea where it got the reputation for being an episode everyone hates. It's rather silly at this point, and I think it's mostly fueled by internet reputation.

Earth is literally the name of our planet. That "earth" also has a denotational meaning of "ground" or "dirt" does not affect that fact. To say otherwise is about as ludicrous as saying that Jupiter refers to a Roman god and is not the actual name of a planet. Where the heck are you getting the idea that the planet technically has no name?!

First, you need to be a little more civil, because your comment comes off as incredibly insulting and aggressive, which is completely unnecessary. Second, scientifically speaking this planet has no official name. Earth is the common colloquial term, while Terra is the term used more often in scientific circles, but this planet has no universally agreed upon scientific name.

You said the planet technically has no name. That's literally false, regardless what you think of my tone. Earth IS the actual name of the planet, at least in English. The lack of a particular universal label within the scientific community does not mean it follows that the planet has no name at all. Insisting that "Earth" is just a colloquialism and not the planet's actual name is just silly, and I'm going to say so.

It's an etymology and linguistics issue. Earth is the english word used for this planet, but not it's name. According to the IAU, all celestial bodies use the Greek/Latin naming system, no matter which language is being used, with the exception of our planet and moon, which uses the english word for those celestial objects because giving them official names would be far to confusing and difficult given all the different names the different languages around the world use.
