Bumi is so great! And the cabbage man. This is my favorite episode thus far (with Kyoshi warriors a close second), and it’s sort of a big turn of the series, when Bumi lays it out explicitly that Aang must face the fire lord.

To be clear, Aang was not picked to be Avatar. It's a reincarnation thing. The way the cycle works is that there is ALWAYS an Avatar - the moment the previous one dies, the next one appears (the series is silent on whether this means the Avatar spirit spontaneously reincarnates into the next conception, or inhabits the first newborn in the next nation within the cycle, or whatever). People don't know who the Avatar is, either. Not until testing reveals it - i.e. there's no special mark or event that alerts people. They just know which tribe of people the next one will be born into because the cycle has always gone the same way: Air - Water - Earth - Fire. So they know where to *look* for the next incarnation.

I wish I had read this an hour ago😂 I thought there were overlaps. Like Avatar Roku would be there to teach Aang before he passes. Well, 11 and 12 I wont re-mention that. 9 and 10 will still have it.
