I watched the show first and saw this when it came out in cinemas. However many years later and I'm still not over it. One of the few films that is guaranteed to bring tears to my eyes. Just that opening shot of Serenity gets me misty. Basically, I'm saying that you're absolutely not alone in how you reacted and I suspect you will always be a little broken after this. Just like the rest of us. (Although, I grew up on Joss Whedon shows. I really should have known better as the bastard lives to emotionally cripple his fans)

Oh man. I'd like to just give you a hug. This was heartbreaking. I had friends who had seen the show and told me about it as the movie was coming out. So I went to the cheap theater to see the movie, and from the style of the dialog and characters, I loved it, and when I got home, I immediately ordered the Firefly DVD set and watched it second. Yeah, I guessed Wash for the favorite character--missed by a little. I have the action figure of Wash with the dinosaurs. Note at the end, Zoe is wearing a "slinky dress" that Zoe and Wash had talked about in Shindig. As to the why Wash had to die, it didn't have to be specifically him, but they were going into a last stand situation versus reavers. A character death at the beginning of it ups the stakes and shows that this is real danger and may not be a simple happy ending where everyone makes it. And there have been movies where all or most of the characters die at the end, so it gets that fear going too. As someone else mentioned, in Buffy and Angel, you get to see Whedon get big time writing mileage from significant character deaths. For instance, in the show Buffy, you have years of episodes of them fighting very dangerous demons and monsters, which makes it so shocking when suddenly in the most random moment, one of the main characters gets shot and killed by just an asshole guy with a gun! It's a gut punch. And he has a ploy of crashing a comedic moment into a tragic one, or sometimes the other way around. So there was an episode where someone got badly injured and then soft camera fade to a funeral, and we think the person died. But then the camera pans out, and we see two other characters who were just out for a stroll at that cemetary and talking about how the person is doing well in the hospital. I actually jumped up from my chair at that and yelled, "Damn you, Whedon!" And thanks for the refreshing and open perspective on faith. The American church culture has been the most damaging thing for making people hate the idea of God with how arrogant, hateful, cruel, intolerant, spiteful, power-hungry, abusive, and all kinds of other things its people have been. If you read in the gospels what Jesus was like, it's nothing like that, and he is I'm sure sickened by how people are representing him that way. Love, compassion, supportiveness, encouraging--these are actually God's character, and most of his church is doing a piss-poor job of actually following it, which makes me really frustrated.
