District 9 FULL LENGTH Reaction

FULL LENGTH REACTION

Hard movie to watch, isn't it? Just one of the best examples of using the Sci-Fi genre to to provide commentary on real-life social issues.

funnylilgalreacts

Sci-fi is really the best genre to do that. It didn’t really occur to me until the next day that this is a take on apartheid. If it wasn’t for Christopher Johnson, I don’t know how I would’ve felt about this movie. But because we got him, it made it easier.

Tenn Seven

Agreed. Christopher Johnson (and Little CJ) demonstrates the thread of humanity that gives lie to the us vs. them mindset. Those feelings of us and others that enable situations like apartheid where we're doing horrible things to other people.

When I saw this movie in theaters I was also totally in the dark as to what I was about to watch, and I had a similar reaction to you. I was not raised on science fiction, my brother and I had to find it on our own. I’ve got a near endless list of movies to watch, but some highlights: Dark City (1998), Evolution (2001), Tremors (1990), The Abyss Extended Cut (1989), *batteries not included (1987)(this movie is adorable.)

Genuinely made me happy to see that you reacted to this film, Wikus is a weak man no doubt about that, really towing the line until he is forced to be on the other side of it, it took him a long time to step up but I was so happy when he did. Its a genuinely great film. Great reaction as always!

Was so excited when I saw you watched this film, that I bumped up my Patreon tier to watch this full length reaction. Back in the day, I decided to watch District 9 the first time because Peter Jackson's name was attached and I heard the visual effects were really good. Just like you, I had no idea what I was in for. The visual effects indeed were (and still are) really great, but the dark social commentary is what makes District 9 special. Some of the best sci-fi and fantasy stories hold up a mirror to the real world. Almost 15 years later, and District 9 still holds up as a great example of sci-fi providing social commentary on very dark, heavy subjects in a way that make it a bit more palatable than you could get away with in a standard drama. I think Sharlto Copley did an amazing job portraying Wikus. Not many movies can pull off having an unlikeable protagonist, but District 9 does so in large part because of Copely. His performance injects just enough humanity into the character that you don't completely tune out despite Wikus repeatedly being a selfish asshole. I'm glad he got more roles after District 9 came out, even if just because he is hilarious in the A-Team movie (well worth watching if you haven't seen it). Looking forward to watching whatever movies you end up reacting to next.

I think he played Wikus well. I hated him when he was being a jerk and applauded him when he did the right thing. I wanted to punch him in his face though. The only way I really liked him was as an alien.

Great reaction as always. It was really fun to watch your confusion at the beginning of the movie, not gonna lie. If you liked the style of Blomkamp, Chappie and Elysium as to be on a future poll ! Like always, keep up the good work it was really fun.

I love this movie, its on my favorite movie list because its well done and so different than everything else. It is very crazy in the way its filmed, and not what people think when they think aliens. The weaponry and violence is unique. Presentation is unique. The story is unique. Blomkamp was given this movie by Peter Jackson as a consolation prize, he felt he owed him. He was originally hired by Jackson to direct the Halo movie that got cancelled, Peter Jackson's production company spent a ton of time and money on it. When the movie was cancelled, Jackson wanted to still give him a movie, and Blomkamp had previously written a short story for District 9 and he decided to give him the money to make it. If I recall, it was his movie directoral debut... They did put out a short Halo film by Neill Blomkamp, it was basically the test footage for the Halo movie. You can see the District 9 style in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yp5jN6kRO0

Chappie and Elysium never did as well at the box office, I liked both... I probably like Elysium more.... there is talk about a possible District 10 movie being in the works and whether or not Blomkamp can ditch the stigma of his "flops". He only seems to work with Copley and do South Africa settings (since he is from there), which may have led to less of a north american uptake on the movies.... which is funny, since half of america hates how much everything is centered in LA and NYC. Looking at his IMDB, it really looks like they haven't trusted him with anything of substance since, which is sad.

Do you want to know what the first movie was that ever made me cry? Short Circuit. I was in love with Johnny 5. When I thought he blew up at the end, I was inconsolable. I was also 6 years old. That and ET. I still sob watching ET.

A month late to posting this, but I just stumbled across Adam Savage doing a Tested interview with Neill Blomkamp about District 9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdLnO2WJ5BE
