My wife and I are a similar late 1970s / early 1980s vintage so also have a great love for the 90s Addams Family films, and had also seen the older show with John Astin as Gomez via reruns in the 80s. We were a little tentative starting with Wednesday, with “Tim Burton and Danny Elfman doing the Addams family” being the main draw but quickly found ourselves utterly charmed by the show. On reflection I’m glad they went the direction they did with Gomez; I tend to think that if they had tried to riff of Raul Julia’s portrayal it would just have been more of a constant reminder that it wasn’t him, plus a more subdued version of Gomez helps keep the focus on Wednesday. On one level the show makes me think of the original run of Twin Peaks, not in terms of plot or visuals, but because in both cases there is a big-name filmmaker with a very distinctive style involved. That style is clearly present, but having other directors and writers etc. on the project seems to serve as something of a handbrake in both cases that stops each show spiralling into full-blown Lynchian and Burtonian oddness.

I felt the same way you did with the reimagining of the Addams Family. I never got into the movies from the '90s but instead, I watched the old black and white show. I'm happy to read from other comments that this rendition is true to the original source.

Edit: I should clarify, I don't usually like change so I was skeptical about this Netflix version and the way the characters look. I watched the first two or three episodes with my kids and so far, I'm ok with it.
