Didn’t expect this! Masterful bit of television

Nenny

Oh boy, I'm excited you're doing this one but it's a HEAVY series. Good Luck and bring tissues. ❤️❤️❤️

Jordan Ade

Ooof this is gonna be a sad one

Stu Kay

@nenny Agreed. I've just caught up on Vox Machina. Me: "Angela's cried enough this week." Angela: "Nope. I'm doubling down on the Kleenex this week"

Icarus

Not great not terrible... it's worth thinking about the current fighting in and around the exclusion zone and even the plant itself. Russian conscripts are routinely sent into the plant and scavenge stuff etc. There was even artillery fired at the plant fairly recently. The place is a powder keg if they mess with it during that war...

I was 11 living in Kiev when this went down. Regular people were not told the actual severity of the disaster until probably weeks later. Some information started leaking out earlier, mostly from those who listened to bootleg western radio. My parents pulled me out of school mid-day, and shipped me off to live with our relatives in Moscow for the next 6 months.

I do glow in the dark sometimes, but other than that everything's fine. j/k

Some0neElse

Oh..... this one hits a bit too close to home with me.... Im still gonna watch it for the 5th time though :D

Lazzy

No show conveys utter dread quite like this one does.

NO SPOILERS. It's completely unrelated. Kyle Hill made a vid on "The Demon Core" Its a crazy story of handling radioactive hardware. Thought you might enjoy it since you're watching Chernobyl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFlromB6SnU&list

David Bodor

If you want to see what Chernobyl is like after the series in the present day - well technically a few years ago, before the whole Russian invasion - Kyle Hill has amazing videos on the place, including a video dedicated to the absolutely cutest puppy dogs living in the wilderness around Chernobyl. I wanna pet a radioactive puppy some day too.

Aaron D

The comedy (of errors) that is Chernobyl. For as awful as the events of history are, this is such a well done series. And really appreciate the comparisons you are able to offer with your experience in dentistry! (I know I mention the title cards a lot, but stellar job here! The falling ash effect, the CNB suit image choices, glowy effect on the font ... really sets the mood)

Ashley

The Puppies of Chernobyl by Drew Scanlon https://youtu.be/IDz599SBRNA?si=vjZD0HiWn90qemjC Also if you have ever seen the White Guy Blinking meme thats him. Drew Scanlon.

Ashley

Just very historically inaccurate but entertaining.

David Bodor

Adorable! I meant this one about the puppies, apparently the dogs are really smart too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmVGwOP_zi8

Ashley

Yeah Kyle Hill is the one everyone knows now but Drew did it first. His whole Chernobyl series is great. actually the whole channels is great but it ended because of covid so there isn't that much content.

Ashley

There is a video of him visiting North Korea but I don't know if its is available anywhere for free.

Anders Thomsen

I know there's a decent chance you're saying it wrong on purpose, but it's "Roentgen (Röntgen) radiation" as in the name for X-rays in a lot of other languages. You probably work in Sievert, and 1 Sv is 0.008695652 Roentgen

kazimieras

you can visit simiral type of power plant in Lithunia. Visaginas. its closed down now. but allow turist. they filmed big part of Chernobyl tv show location shots there.

Ashley

Drew did so many videos in Ukraine before the war I wonder how those people are doing today.

Jordan Butterworth

One thing this show did soooo well (and you’ll come to see) is explain complex science concepts in a way that the average person can understand without sounding like clunky exposition. By the end about 90% of your questions should be answered so don’t worry if you don’t understand everything right away.

Hi, I am Hi.

Angela crying? Completely normal phenomenon. Looking forward to your reactions to the rest of this show!

Saphthings

I feel like a lot of this comment are "spoilers". I feel like this sort of discussion is best left for the final episode.

Saphthings

Ooof, this is a toughie. I remember suggesting to watch it in between fun stuff to not get your soul crushed. For this reaction, you don't really need much explanation or things known. Most of it will be explained by the end. It's not a series you really need to watch out for spoilers because it's a real thing, but I feel like a lot of the comments are going way too much into it lol. Let her watch a few episodes first!

Matthew Lorber

The show doesn’t really set the stage properly. This was 1986, the was USA vs USSR, this was still very much prime Cold War. There was no actual fighting but the propaganda war was extreme. Anything negative would be used as propaganda by the other side which is why you saw the reaction you did. Ironically by this time Gorbachev had started pushing his glasnost and perestroika reforms which was openness and restructuring. The show very clearly illustrated in the first episode why the USSR needed openness/transparency reforms.

The thing about Dyatlov is that he is absolutely liable for the terrible response to the initial core explosion. The graphite on the ground outside is incredibly bad, and he realized that as soon as he saw it. He also denied it's very existence right before that scene where he threw up. But as the man in the beginning (Valery Legasov) said, he was the convenient scapegoat. The core explosion was just a part of it. The second part of the tragedy was a failing on many levels. Chief among them, the government's response. In the USSR, questioning the government, or worse, accusing them of something like mismanagement, was a grave crime. You can see this in the way the old man in the town meeting responds after the younger man suggests evacuating the town. He defers to the report given by the government officials because according to their own propaganda, the government CAN NOT be wrong. Even though the younger man pointed out that people nowhere near the reactor are showing symptoms of radiation sickness, the old man denies that evidence. It's exactly as George Orwell wrote in his book, '1984'. "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." That's not to say Dyatlov is innocent. He was in the wrong. But he's also a victim of circumstance. I can't explain too much, because honestly I'm not a nuclear physicist, and also the explanation shows up later in the show. I'm gonna stop typing now before I accidentally spoil something major. Looking forward to the next episode!

The good meter (the one that could read doses over 3.6 roentgen/hour) is more expensive, so it's locked up to keep anyone from stealing it.

Summer

great series, one of the best really. but I know this is gonna be a rough one for you 😬 also really digging the new room! looks awesome 😎

Darth Muppet

One of the best pieces of television ever created. Also one of the most brutal and soul crushing…

Gambit3838

This is 1 of the greatest miniseries ever. This show made me sad, mad, happy, angry, etc... It's got all the feels.
