And once again: ALLONS-Y!

Dont worry... Doctor Who loves to spoil stuff with its "next season/episode" stuff at the end of each episode

David Vandervliet

You may not realize it yet but the actress playing Martha’s mother was one of the Cat Nun Nurses back in New Earth. The Judoon Platoon on the Moon…. They set that all up because David Tennant had trouble keeping is Scottish accent from slipping out when saying the -oon sound and they wanted to tease him

Azmat Mahmood

Smith and Jones is the best series opener of the RTD era imo. Such a fun story that establishes the new companion and themes for the rest of the series very well. I love the idea of a single hospital being transported to the moon and the natural consequences for all the humans inside when it happened is very interesting to see. I also really like the Judoon and think they make for a very fun and entertaining foe. Their absolute adherence to rules and protocol is hilarious and the way the Doctor uses that against them in order to trap the plasmavore "Mrs Stoker" is very satisfying. Speaking of her, she's amazing. The way she balances between being cheesy and creepy is so good to watch. I have to say David Tennant is DYNAMITE in this story, one of his best and most underrated performances. As great as he was in series 2, his performances reach a whole new level from this series onward imo. A lot more intense, more serious and darker too. The frivolity from series 2 isn't really there anymore. Freema Agyeman also makes a good first impression, I think she bounces off Tennant very well. This series is off to a great start, but this isn't even close to the best it has to offer.

Thomas Gilbert

Martha is probably the most underrated companion in the series, you’ll see as the season goes on how vital she is and some of the best Who stories are coming up. Enjoy!!

Michele Jean

Your cut jump at the Canary Warf discussion was fantastic. That was a great laugh, thank you for that. I think it's safe to mention that Doctor Who is a lot like Star Trek in the way of their actors. If the show runners like an actor, you may see an actor make an appearance more than once.

Rester

Notes from a Doctor Who fan: 1) Just going to start off by pointing out the irony of Mr Stoker getting killed by a vampire. 2) I think it's pretty clear from my responses to your Farscape videos, and Doctor Who videos that I have a fondness for a very specific sort of character: the character who, by all traditional story-telling metrics shouldn't be in the main cast. I knew you'd love Jackie by the end, and she will be sorely missed. 3) When this season first came out, there was a lot of 'First Companion Mourning' that did Martha dirty in the fandom. People didn't like her because she wasn't Rose. Having watched these seasons a good few times over the (hell, almost 20?) years since the reboot first rebooted, Martha is such a delight. I'm really glad you're immediately sold on her, and Agyeman (Ah-Ji-Man) does a great job. In fact one of my favourite episodes/two-parters is this season. You're in for a trip!

Cara Watson

So glad Who is back 😁 This is a really good episode and S3 has some really cool episodes that I cannot wait to see your reaction to 😁 That’s all I can say for fear of spoilers 😂

Vinny Johnston

You should watch David Tennant in "taking over the asylum " though you may need subtitles ,cos it's very broad Scots.

Kevin

So wish I could share the older Who, to show you how great it was and how awful it was. And YES, some companions that we could sooooo do without. Some Doctor's too... You have the best of Who in this restart. Though I stopped at the Capaldi time.

Anders Thomsen

A companion that I don't care for: Adam Michell.... With his snippy-snappy forehead.. (I've mentioned before that you're a companion even if you're only in one episode)

Anders Thomsen

Martha is one of the more underrated companions. She's not most peoples favorite. I'm glad you like her.

Chris Padwick

Good work with the emotional restraint. I adore Martha: really smart, intellectually curious and adventurous and thinks on her feet. The Doctor gave us another indie band name with "Barefoot on The Moon" along with the last episode where Donna gave us "Santa's A Robot". Time Lord's not only have 2 hearts but 3 brain stems and, according to one novel, their retinas 'think' (a concept I just can't grasp. But then again, I wasn't blessed with big retinas). Jackie's adventures continue in several Big Finish audios so treat yourself - as Jackie says "Never punch a gift horse in the mouth"

James Fleischman

Martha's family, especially her mother, irritate me. I'm probably being somewhat classist here because we're jumping from Rose who's solid working class and then we get a taste of Donna who seemed to be lower middle class and now we're with Martha's upper middle class family. But they come off a bit on the side of not having time for anybody in their introduction here and that's not my experience of more well off families.

John Williams

This season has the scariest Doctor Who episode of all time. I will leave it at that to avoid spoilers.

I love Martha. She's very different to Rose - in background, education, self-confidence - but she matches the Doctor well, challenging and complementing him in different ways to Rose. Rose was very emotionally intelligent and resourceful, and Martha is, as you pointed out, a nerd. There was unfortunately some backlash against her by Rose fans, after her introduction, and I remember quite a bit of anger over how hard the show sold her as a worthy companion. But they kind of had to. The Doctor needed to be impressed by her to overcome his reluctance to have a companion. I kind of love the Judoon as well. Big, doofy, rhinoceros space cops who do their jobs with relentless efficiency. Also, if you ever decided to react to Sense8, which Freema was one of the stars of, you would not regret it. A show with huge heart and ambition, all about love and acceptance.

JBK405

Ah, Martha Jones! She is one of my top-three Companions for all of New Who. One establishing moment that skyrockets her to the top is that bit with the hospital air on the Moon, since it shows how smart and adaptable she is. There are other Companions who came in already knowing about aliens and time travel -- Jack Harkness was already a Time Agent long before he met the Doctor -- but Martha figured it out even without already having that knowledge. She couldn't identify the H20 Scoop from the upside-down rain, but she knows that something is wrong. She can't explain the forcefield, but she knows that normal building windows aren't airtight so there has to be SOMETHING holding the air in. That display of common sense and logical analysis made her a sweetheart for me right from the start.

JBK405

Oh, a difference between her and Rose with regards to 'leaving her family' is that Martha is already older than Rose was. She already lives on her own. She has "moved out" in a way that Rose didn't before she met the Doctor. When a kid grows up and moves out to their first apartment, even if it's in the same town, that's a big shock to their family. When they move again a few years later it's not the same kind of massive change, even if they're moving much further away. Martha is still "young", but she's at a different stage in life. 23 compared to Rose at 19, and those four years can make a big difference.

Ejigantor

And at the same time as noticing those things, she also took note of the beauty of it all.

John the Rambling Scriblerian

Barefoot on the Moon! That was my online tagline for the LONGEST time, being an avid amateur astronomer. Well, I'm not a barefoot kind of person, but... anyway. This was a big tipping point for me, with New Who. I feel like the show had steadily been maturing, and with this season it seemed to have grown up a lot. That's not to be disparaging about the earlier seasons, mind you. I love them all! And I hope you do, too.

Eefa

Just jumping in since nobody’s remembered to mention yet that Martha’s sister, Tish (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is judge Ravonna Renslayer from Loki😁😁 Adjoa Andoh is Lady Danbury! Who has many one time appearances from actors who were already household staples at the time, but it’s also nice spotting out actors making their contribution to the Whoniverse before they really took off, as well!

Beth

No spoilers here, just want to say that I LOVE Martha and this is possibly my favourite series (although I might say that about a lot of series 😅) Martha got a fair amount of hate when she first showed up but it was mostly just people really missing Rose and needing time to adjust. I have to say, the music in this series is really lovely too, Martha’s theme is so beautiful.

Wilmer Garcia

OMG New Background? Moved rebuilt? LOOKS AWESOME =D

nldw

The head port thing when you snap your fingers never fails to make me laugh, even 2 seasons later.

Wes Rumbelow

It’s pronounced Freema Ah-juh-mun (hard A, like hat. soft g like gerald)

Aaron D

The taking-off-his-tie introduction from the doctor is one of my favorite "harmless" time travel shenanigans to say "see! see?!?!" that I've run across in almost any series ^.^ (Also, love the "thoughts from future me" edit about Adeola. That was neat!)

Jessica H.

I totally agree! I still think she's my favorite companion and I've listened to this seasons soundtrack so many times and cried every time! The music is so beautiful.

C_Drew

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Martha Jones!!!!!!!

Brianna Gray

All the companions are good looking, but Martha is one of the prettiest to me. She's also one of those companions you enjoy more with each rewatch. Some people didn't give her enough of a chance though, being too upset over the loss of Rose. Her character growth is one of my favorites in the show.

Darren Withers

I kind of tried to share the campiness and fun of Old Who in Angela’s Doctor Who chat by sharing the Rowan Atkinson Comedy Special “The Curse of the Fatal Death”. Did you do Capaldi at all, or give up early in his run? His first season was a little weak, admittedly, but he had one of the best bottle episodes I’ve seen in any series during his run.

Gambit3838

Lawd I had the hugest crush on Martha the moment she appeared on screen. She's one of the best companions ever.

Kevin

I think of Rowen Atkinson's Who as a diversion, and not canon. I'm thinking more of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker - The definitive Dr Who's for me. Or the most dreadful times of Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. I finished the old run with them. Matt Smith was fun, but I felt he was too young to have the burden of time on him, and the first episodes of Capaldi ended it for me again. Maybe, from your recommendation I have some worthwhile retrospectives in my future? Anyway, loved Capaldi in "The Thick Of It" so I will return with a fresh perspective, and imagining him with extra adjectives turning the air blue.

monulito

I love Martha Jones!!!

Max Mcgibney

The reason the tardis is so shakey in flight is because it’s supposed to be piloted by 5 time lords but he’s the only one hence all the running around the consol :)
