YES I've been hyped for this one since you put up that poll!

Nes1068

My all time favorite movie. 🍿

Now that you have seen The Thing, you are ready for Thingu, a Pingu-themed parody: https://youtu.be/QAoONl2P8fw?si=eoygsndDp2EVDHNC

I'm so glad you have rectified the colossal error of having not experienced the seminal 1980's John Carpenter film John Carpenter's The Thing.

Aidan Sheridan

Angela if you want answers for the other base you need to watch the 2011 prequel which is also called The Thing

Moricant

“The Fog” and “In the Mouth of Madness” are some other great John Carpenter horror movies. “Escape From New York” and “Big Trouble in Little China” aren’t horror but are other collaborations between John Carpenter and Kurt Russell that are well worth your time.

Cody Barnes

Oh goodness the Witchs, I felt that statement. Anjelica Huston is great, but that movie will freak a kid out.

Raymond Taylor

so waiting on the end comments now !!!

Raymond Taylor

the whole who is the thing, are one? both? how did mecready survive the explosion ... lol

Jaime Unson

Kurt Russell did a good number of collabs with John Carpenter in the ‘80s. The Thing was his second film with him. Escape From New York (1981) is a must see, as well as Big Trouble in Little China (1986). Both are John Carpenter classics. Kurt Russell has had a great career transitioning from child star to Disney teen heartthrob then into an amazing leading man and action star.

Ahhhhhhhh, this classic. The practical special effects here are still unrivaled in brilliance and sheer technical skill. The question of "Which, if either, are a Thing at the end" is still hotly debated to this day. Various continuations (Comics, video games, etc.) have all had different takes. There has never been a single definitive answer, and there are countless small hints in the film itself that you can draw conclusions from. Childs disappearing then reappearing is obviously suspicious, but Blair DID escape from where they locked him up so Childs could have seen him and then run out into the storm. Getting lost at night in Antarctica is perfectly believable. MacReady fought the Thing up until the end, but how did he survive the explosion without any visible burning or damage (apart from apparent exhaustion and cold)? What if some small part of the Thing got him in the basement and became an imitation after the explosion? What if neither of them are a Thing? What if BOTH are? I don't have an answer.

Hi, I am Hi.

This movie is an awesome gem! Is it save to assume you will be reacting to the other top picks? Event Horizon and The Mist?

Sone

Glad you watched it. It's great movie . Are we going to get any more scare movies before Halloween?

"~Put that thing back where it came from or so help me!~" From the practical effects to the atmospheric story telling, still holds up as a fantastic (horrifying) movie, and one of the best examples of the Eldritch/Cosmic horror genre. Fun facts! With a budget of around $15-ish million, it only made ~$20 million at the box office. Another cult classic that only really found its audience after its release to home video and appreciation over the years. To save money and time, the destroyed Norwegian camp we see early in the movie was actually filmed using the same set as the American base (after filming the finale and all the explosions). The effects team was led by Rob Bottin, who also worked on movies like RoboCop and Total Recall. He was only in his early 20's at the time of working on The Thing, and had to be hospitalized from overworking himself during post production. There have been a number of restorations and high resolution releases of the movie over time, including separate 2K and 4K scans. It's possible you were seeing one of those re-releases from the comments about how crisp/sharp the details were, although even early DVD releases were remarkably clean transfers.

Great reaction! Been hooked on this flick since I was little (shouldn't have saw it) I still have this on VHS! Regarding Keith David (Childs), this was one of his early roles. He's mainly a character actor, but he does a ton of voice over work. You may recognize him from, "They Live" w/ Roddy Pipper. He also voiced Spawn and Goliath (Gargoyles).

Esteban M.

Keith was also great in the comedy Men at Work with the Sheen brothers

Will there be a watch-along version?

The music on this movie made the atmosphere SO well... That vibe alone was enough to give me pause as a kid. I was not disappointed LOL To this day, this movie remains among my top ten favorites of all time.

One thing I noticed was that Childs, when the two were talking at the end, did not seem to expel any breath in that cold. However, that could also simply have been the angle of the lighting. I do, however, love the ambiguity of the ending. That it remains unresolved decades later is a fantastic tribute to the storytelling.

I literally just watched an analysis of this and he had really good theories about if Mac was a thing, if childs was a thing, and if both were at the end, he also had a very in depth analysis of the timeline, and some behind the scenes info from Carpenter and Russell, and how it was supposed to make you wonder who was who or what.

Merkavar

the thing game on playstation from what i can recall really captured the movie well, especially the sound making you feel cold

Merkavar

look at how docile that dog is :D

Merkavar

most of the slow and unrealistic reactions in this movie seem to be there simply to allow the pratical effects to have some screen time. if people flamethrow or run away quickly the thing would only get half as much screen time as it did

Molto_Benny

Now that I've had time to actually watch the reaction all the way thru, I can say I felt the same way when I saw the ending. I wanted to see what happened! But the mystery is amazing. Which one of them is it? Macready? Childs? Neither? The theories people have about it are awesome. One I saw a while back suggested that Macready gave Childs something nasty in the bottle at the end, to test if he'd react after drinking it. Another one suggested Macready was the Thing, and he put a drop of his blood or something in the bottle to infect Childs. Personally, I believe Childs was the Thing. If you watch the ending again, you can see Macready's breath in the air because of how cold it is. Childs' breath doesn't show up. The unfortunate reality is, there's no chance of a good ending. If either one of them is a Thing, it'll kill the other or just wait them out. Or neither of them are the Thing, and they both end up freezing anyway. You've probably already heard of the 2011 prequel, and I hope you watch it. It's not as iconic as this one, but it's good. I'm still holding out hope we'll get a sequel eventually. They even said the Thing could just let itself freeze again.

Frederik Jensen

The good ending is both of them die of exposure because they are human. But I agree with you, Childs gave Thing vibes.

I bartend in Long Beach, CA. Sometimes I think if Angela walked into a bar I was at while I was wearing a hat I'd toss the hat out a window or just run out the door. :]

Kinda funny how the radio guy is named "Windows" and the pilot is named "Mac." I think it's before Microsoft or Apple were doing their thing, too.
