Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

It's really not as bad of an episode as people make it out to be. It's just a little goofy is all. And yeah there's a few cringe moments too 😆 But Jackie was such a VIP this episode, defending Rose and The Doctor. You really see the weight Jackie has on her shoulders and how much she's lost too.

Amy Lillian Bone

Not as awful as I remember but still pretty poor. The whole paving slab denouement was pretty gross. Especially given the monster was the winning design in a fan competition run on the kids TV show Blue Peter. Fortunately the other Doctor-Lite episodes are much better. Two are arguably among the best ever episodes of all time.

Sorcerer Rumburak

I confirm: It's one of the weaker episodes - I would skip it in a re-watch. BUT: I really like the actor Marc Warren (Elton) - also to see in the show "Van der Valk" - complete other character. If you're in mood for a crime drama in Amsterdam: Give it a chance. To your suggestion to the various doctors, don't forget their companions. They also don't stay forever - even Rose. 😢

IIRC the genesis of this episode was in part that to maintain production deadlines they had to film this at the same time as the previous episodes, which is why the Doctor and Rose are mostly absent. Plus, as Amy Lillian Bone mentioned, a children’s competition to design a Dr Who monster. Apparently the winner was a bit disappointed as he had intended the Absorbaloff to be the size of a bus.

So this is what is called a 'Doctor-Lite' Episode and exists because they had to make 14 episodes (13 main and 1 xmas special) in the same amount of time they made 13 for S1 so this episode was double banked with eps 8/9 - while one production crew plus Tennant & Piper were filming those, another crew filmed this at the same time. There's a popular fan reading of this episode that it was RTD's take on fan culture i.e people meeting through whatever media they are passionate about and then becoming friends beyond that and then Victor represents the Toxic fans who take things way to seriously and end up ruining things. And, yes, that line at the end 'We've even got a bit of a love life' is a bit gross but at the same time, and this may be me being naïve, that doesn't have to mean sex, love life and sex life aren't necessarily one and the same, Elton could simply mean that he considers himself and Ursula an item with that sentiment. One more thing I find strange about this episode, and it's something I've only noticed recently, is that most people (rightly) feel immediate sympathy for Jackie when she is saying how hard it is being left behind but in the episode 'Boom Town', Mickey says virtually the same thing to Rose but people write him off as being pathetic. I understand the situations aren't quite the same but I still think this is an interesting point.

I loved him (Marc Warren) in Hustle. That was a fun tv show, and the first time I saw him.

I have a soft spot for this episode? Is it well acted? Not really. Is it weird that it has a last minute reveal that Elton shags a paving slab? Yes. But is it also has a bittersweet story about how a social club about a casual shared interest can be ruined by one unhygienic control-freak obsessive nerd? Absolutely.

Rach

Also the scenes of the abzorbaloff licking his lips suggestively and running around the street in a black thong is so hilariously bad that I absolutely love it, crack up every time. Imagine if it was someones first ever Who episode lol

Amy Lillian Bone

I agree. Mark Warren is fantastic and has been in many top notch shows like Band of Brothers, Hogfather & Life on Mars to name a few. And of course the film Snatch.

Matthew Case

This episode is widely considered the worst episode of New who. I actually appreciated the first half a lot more than I remember, however I think it was let down by the monster of the week.

Colin Partridge

I used to think this was a skippable episode. But turns out I have a bit of a soft spot for it. Someone else mentioned bittersweet. I watched it straight after your impossible planet video came out, and here is me watching it all again a few days later and still enjoying it.

Joel Palenychka

This _was_ one of my friends' first Doctor Who episodes and it has turned him off the series forever. He absolutely refuses to watch any other episodes.

Not *windshield*... *Canopy*? Maybe just *window* lol Well you asked... :D

Rach

"What's the matter, given up so soon?" from the Abzorbaloff feels so pertinent

Rach

Hustle is one of my biggest comfort shows. Whenever I feel the world is unfair I switch it on and watch Mickey and the crew take down some tories and everything feels better lol
