First Doctor Lite :) /Doctor Light not sure, but a bottle episode without him mostly. Very cool to see the rest of the Whoniverse

Love and Monsters has a good premise to start with, but a very bad ending let's it down to a certain extent. The first 30 minutes are actually quite good imo, but it's only when the Abzorbaloff comes in that it all goes a bit pear shaped. Overall, I still think this episode is solid. It's certainly not as terrible as most people would have you believe. I'm of the opinion that the episode isn't really even about the Abzorbaloff, not at all in fact. It's about the impact the Doctor can have on people's lives. How he can bring people together and make their lives wonderful, but can also tear their lives apart and ruin them. It's also an allegory for toxic people in fandoms; the ones who takes things too seriously and think their way is the only right way and take all the fun out of everything. I also love the deeper look into Jackie's character and the ones "who get left behind" and the impact that has on them. It adds a lot of depth to her character. If you look at this episode in that way, it works a whole lot better.

Russell Crockett

Ooh, the single greatest episode of Who ever!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Florian Hoyer

i love your reactions but not even you can make me watch this episode again and i LOVE marc warren hes the best in one of my favorite tv shows "hustle" but this episode truly was the worst rated episode until season 11. now i think its not even in the top20 anymore but until season 11 this was the worst it got xD

Wes Rumbelow

whoops, this one has the Satan Pit title card around 5:15 😅

Maybonics

Ahh, that'd be why it vanished while I was halfway through it lol

Sean

Thankfully, most Doctor-lite episodes are not all of this quality. In fact, one Doctor-lite episode is considered one of the best episodes ever. To your point about the last episode being scifi/fantasy, Neil Gaiman once said, "Doctor Who has never pretended to be hard science fiction … At best Doctor Who is a fairytale, with fairytale logic about this wonderful man in this big blue box who at the beginning of every story lands somewhere where there is a problem."

Lloyd B

This episode gets a lot of (undeserved, in my opinion) hate, but I love it for its quirkiness and charm. Yes, the monster is cheesy, but the fun thing about it was that it was designed by a child for a competition on the children’s show Blue Peter, the prize being that the winning entry would feature in a Doctor Who episode. Elton’s a great character, and LI’n’DA is a delightful group of geeky outsiders. And of course, Jackie really steals the show with her scenes. You may find there is the occasional “Doctor light” episode (and indeed Companion light as well), some of which I guarantee will become your some of your favorites. It’s sometimes due to the tight filming schedules, when one or the other of the leads may not be fully available. As for the “love life” comment at the end, well we all wish that hadn’t happened, leaving as it does an image indelibly etched in our minds we really don’t want☹️.

Stu Kay

Agree that this is a weaker ep, but I don't think it's a spoiler to tell you that this is where they hit a bit of a budgetary skid for a couple of episodes. IIRC there was a kids' tv show competition to design a Doctor Who monster: the Absorbaloff won.

William Burnham

Whilst the Peter Kay character was not the best he is a superb comedian, loads of clips of stand up and shows on YouTube 😀😀😀😀😀

Guywithpants

I still can't view this, is it just me?

XanderWhat

It’s working for me, but I had to force quit the app. If you’re on a browser, maybe a refresh?

Michele Jean

Maybe someone can remind me, wasn't this monster, the abzorbiwhatever was actually from a contest in which a child won with their design?

The Girl Who Was Erased

I don't care what anyone says, Love and Monsters is actually not a bad episode at all and most certainly not the worst episode of doctor who ever. Sure, it's not a masterpiece and the Ursula-slab sex joke is pretty unforgivable but I appreciate it for what it is. Elton and LINDA were nice characters, Jackie Tyler is a legend and has some great scenes, it's a good exploration from the perspective of the people who come in contact with the doctor but "get left behind", and the fact that the Abzorbaloff was designed by a child who won a contest is a nice little bonus.

Dragon

Over hated episode in my opinion. I get why not everyone loves it, far from a great story but it's silly and camp and is clearly very aware of that fact. Most people play up the "Worst episode of Doctor Who" aspect. No spoilers, but there are worse episodes. I'd take an episode like this over a boring and safe episode any day.

David Vandervliet

Exactly. A long running BBC children’s show Blue Peter, which has a history of teaming up with Doctor Who had a contest to make a Doctor Who monster

Sorcerer Rumburak

(light) SPOILER <-----------------------> One of the best Doctor-lite-episodes are "Don't blink" and "73 Yards". "Love & Monsters" can be skipped for re-watch. jm2c

Anders Thomsen

The worst Who episode that I've seen (though by no means the worst TV show episode I've ever seen). Just being honest.

Kristine Harbek

The bit of you failing to say Raxacoricofallapatorious made me laugh, cause at a Doctor Who live show this weekend, they ALMOST made the audience say that, before saying it was cheating because it's too hard. When I was SO READY to say it! But also, the second performance, Barnaby Edwards (Dalek operator in just about every Dalek episode, and writer/actor/director in a bajillion Doctor Who audio dramas) actually managed to say it wrong! So don't worry if you have trouble with it. :)

David Vandervliet

That last monologue about the world. I always liked that one. As you noticed the Doctor and Rose are barely in this episode. That was a production decision made to help the schedule load on them. A TV series, especially an FX heavy one can have long days. 14-16 hour days are not unheard of. By not have much of Billie and David here allowed them to be available to film more for…. Well you’ll find out. As mentioned. The abzorbaloff was created by a 12 year old boy as part of a contest for Blue Peter, a children’s magazine program on the BBC that has had a long history with Who. One former companion from the 60s was a long time host of the show after he left Doctor Who, and the only reason we still have the footage of the 1st ever regeneration from 1966 is the scene was later shown on Blue Peter. The episode itself was part of many episodes wiped from the 60s and 70s. But the Blue Peter episode wasn’t, saving that important bit of Doctor Who history.

Chameleon Circuit is what makes the TARDIS look like a police box. The Perception Filter is what makes it seem inconspicuous unless you know it's special.

Aidan Sheridan

Peter Kay is my favourite comedian

Gambit3838

Well they can't all be bangers. This was definitely one of my least faves but it's still Who. This episode is like Pizza, even if it's bad I'm still OK because at least I'm getting it. (That could just be because I'm from Jersey. Lol)

James Miller

One of the few episodes of New Who I've never watched again. RTD presided over some good series, but his individual stories he wrote...there are some rough ones.

Michael Nolan

Asorbsloff was the incredible Peter Kay, perennial ambassador from Bolton. He is a genius comedian, and his shows like Phoenix Nights are masterpieces of understated British humour.

James Fleischman

I love ELO and especially Mr Blue Sky so that's definitely a plus on this episode but yes waaaaaaaay too little Tennant and Rose

Craig

This and the next episode are a bit of a slog to get through compared to truly amazing finale episodes

Firefly24601

The Scooby-Doo chase near the beginning of the episode lets us know this is going to be quite a campy episode. I accept this episode for what it is; I like it!

Jack Mingle

Really for me it's the Blowjob Cement Slab Girlfriend that does it for me, anything else up until that was acceptable.

SweetCandle

If you want to hear more from Electric Light Orchestra (And why wouldn't you? They're amazing), Out of the Blue is their most famous album, and Discovery is good as well, but Time is definitely my favorite.

Chris Padwick

Regarding the Admirable Mr Tennant's tenure - you can breathe a while. The Chameleon Circuit has been knackered since 1963 Yes, indeed, Moaning Myrtle. Tick another box in the 'S/He was in Harry Potter!' list. There's loads. You noticed the lack of our Time Lord. Apparently, it was to do with BBC parsimony. Something of a filler. Should have been called Love and Meh, really. Not progress the story? Hmm, yes and no but not by much. The glorious adventures of the Tyler family can be heard on various Big Finish audio & Jackie is in a few novels as well. Should you take up the Big Finish route, may I recommend that you don't listen to them while driving? I hit a bollard over the shock of an unexpected appearance of a Sontaran (they're right little bastards, I can assure you).

Hugh Diffey

A twin planet is a planet that is similar in size or any number of factors to another planet. Also... I've always been a bit confused about how grossed out people get about Ursula. Her line suggesting she'll never age is one thing, which implies she's now immortal, but people usually react strongly to the suggestion of the love life. Ursula at this point is fundamentally indistinguishable from someone who is paralyzed from the neck down, they deserve to have a love life that's given respect as well (Not a personal attack, just a bugbear of mine, because it is such a frequent reaction, and it's usually the first thing people bring up in regards to why the episode sucks when the Absorboloff is right there, also, you should watch a video made by the guy who actually designed it, he won a Blue Peter competition when he was 6 I believe, and his design was way better then the inevitable crash between imagination and budget)

Mellie-B

I have now joined patreon! Really hoping you cover Torchwood. Like at least give the first episode a try (after Doctor Who season 2 finale!)

Firefly24601

I hope the DW/Torchwood spreadsheet I made helps with keep everything sane and in order!

Brianna Gray

There are always warnings through out the show that getting too close to the Doctor doesn't end well. Like the first episode when Clive warned Rose that the Doctor's constant companion is Death. Companions are people who know this, but find it worth the risk. I feel like this episode shows that even just barely touching the Doctor's world can be dangerous and/or fatal.

Jason

The problem is not I think as you suggest but the manner in which it's presented, as a 'nudge-nudge wink-wink' oral sex joke for the adults to get, at no point does it feel like a serious attempt to comment on the need for physical contact if you are parlaysed, its meant as a dirty joke, nothing more. And however you look at it that is still an odd choice for a joke or even comment on parlaysed peoples sex life, in an episode featuring a 6 year olds prize winning monster.

Hugh Diffey

Nope, sorry, that's putting the cart before the horse. I have spent 18 years watching people be disgusted by Ursulas fate, not sympathy for how it might be difficult, but genuine shock, disgust and derision. RTD can make as many sex jokes as he wants to, that does not give anybody the right to dehumanise anybody. Also you know writing doesn't have to be intentional? Russell famously was quite bad at writing disabled characters (at least, on DW), I don't even think it's important because whether it's intentional or not; Ursula is disabled. That's who she is now, you have to take that part seriously even if her new life is only portrayed for the sake of a blowjob joke for 15 seconds at the end of an episode.

Mellie-B

I hate this episode hahaha I understand they wanted a Doctor and companion-lite episode because the schedule for filming was wild. And these types of episodes can be done well. But this one I really don't like haha

John the Rambling Scriblerian

I'm not sure how I missed this reaction! So... yeah, this episode had its own, er, personality shall we say.... But honestly, I have always loved it. It had heart, and it had soul, and probably as an unpopular opinion, I have always wanted to see more of Elton. No, I am not a fan of the alien design, nor am I of the resolution, per se. But... his story in general was such a heartbreaker. And yet, at the same time, he is Outstanding for his end view of things. Ah, Doctor Who Cheese!!
