I really enjoy this episode. It does have a big, dumb action movie feel, but it does also have a few interesting concepts lurking underneath. I enjoy all the themes it explores. I think this story is a critique of society in a digital age. The people have been consumed by their love of technology. They've become so desperate for the latest tech and updates that they don't think twice before handing over so much power and control to one corporation and more specifically, one power hungry, desperate mad man. A man who is so desperate to survive that he's willing to exploit people's thirst for new technology and sell them a lie. The disturbing thing is that despite all this, Lumic still genuinely believes everything he's doing is for the benefit of humanity and completely necessary. The writers are coming at it from a totally different angle from the original concept of the Cybermen from the classic series, but the tragedy of a society destroying itself is still definitely there. It's also scarily pertinent for 2024, let alone 2006! I also think the writers make sure to highlight the horrible fate of the humans being converted into these metal creatures. The homeless people being lured into the back of vans with the false promise of being given food is very disturbing. The scenes with the people lined up ready to be converted are quite unsettling. Then the scene with Mrs Moore and the Doctor disabling the emotional inhibitor of that Cyberman/woman is pretty emotional, when she starts to remember who she was and that she was getting married the next day. The Doctor's realisation that the only way to defeat the Cybermen is to disable their emotional inhibitors and subsequent moral dilemma is also really well played by Tennant, whose on the ball throughout this story. There's a great moment right at the end, when the Doctor sends out the signal that disables all the Cybermen's emotional inhibitors and one of the Cybermen sees itself in a mirror and starts to cry and you just hear the Doctor say sorry in the back. These people have lost their individuality. They've been dehumanised and been stripped of their identity and the story makes sure to remind you of that fact. This story really makes you feel pity for those big metal behemoths. I still prefer the classic series' take on the Cybermen, but I think this story does an admirable job at re imagining the Cybermen for a modern audience. Also, setting this story on a parallel Earth avoids running into the problem of ret conning or contradicting the original concept of the Cybermen. So, it was a job well done imo. The final sequence with the Doctor's big speech, highlighting the basic design flaws in the Cybermen, whilst at the same time egging on Mickey is quite brilliant. Really shows how quick the Doctor can think on his feet and how smart he is to realise and know that Mickey must be watching. That scene is also the definitive moment of Mickey's character growth. The final goodbyes are of course really sad and you realise, right along with Rose what we're losing in the form of Mickey. This story is Mickey's coming out party for sure. Looking forward to your next reactions, but maybe not so much for the one immediately after this. Not really a big fan...

I though smelling salts woke people up. It actually makes people sleep?

The Girl Who Was Erased

Lmao I love the recurring gag of the chip type 2 opening every time you snap your fingers. Also quite controversial opinion, but for me the cybermen are way creepier than the daleks. Cybermen take away all that makes you human, the daleks just kill you and for me that's less scary.

Ken Penttinen

I would just like to call back to Season 1, Ep 4 Aliens of London: MICKEY: I bet you don't even remember my name. DOCTOR: Ricky. MICKEY: It's Mickey. DOCTOR: No, it's Ricky. MICKEY: I think I know my own name. DOCTOR: You think you know your own name? How stupid are you?

Josef Schiltz

The late Roger Lloyd Pack who played Lumic, was long running character 'Trigger' in the BBC comedy series Only Fools and Horses. Angela; To see another side of RLP, take a look at one of the most famous scenes of this series, Del Boy falls through the bar. You need a good laugh after this Who episode. RLP really sells this scene.

"thats na emotional reaction " riucky was gay and in love with the guy thats why so emotional their a cut scene where its brought up

Chris Padwick

It's & Angela's sobbing - oh of course: it's Doctor Who Wednesday! Barty Crouch Senior = Lumic, btw! Did you not notice? You need to start a list of HP-Doctor Who actors because, trust me, there aren't many British actors who haven't been in both. Alright, a bit of a stretch but not without some truth. I think it was important that the human-beneath-the-metal-skin aspect was stressed otherwise the Cybermen would be just another bunch of central casting robo-villains. And the Cybermen go back a long way too. The original versions had their hands still, maintaining their human origins & giving them more depth, more pathos & more creepiness. I love a two-parter when I can just carry on watching the second episode without a break. Otherwise, it's a frustrating pain - and on occasion, they'll torment you with a 3 parter. So be warned. Actually, the classic show could drag a story out for 6 episodes so be warned.

Frederik Jensen

Ohhhh. Makes sense. Smelling salts are one of those American things we just don't have.

Frank J

It's my head canon that when the 9th Doctor called him Ricky he subconsciously "remembered" this future event.

MertzRocks

Those were 25 min eps with about 5 min overlap, so a 6parter would be 3 in nuWho. A classic 6-part story uncut is like watching a movie!

This is another story that is an adaption of an audio from Big Finish, called Spare Parts. It is widely considered one of the best audio, and they did a very good job adjusting it to the new series, but if you get a chance to check it out I highly recommend it. Talking about the Daleks and the similarities. Delete. - exterminate it is the same actor, Nick Briggs doing all the voices. There is a classic story that covers the creation of the Daleks that I highly recommend

Hugh Diffey

If you're wondering why Jake had such an intense reaction to losing Ricky, they cut out a line where Jake said that he and Ricky were boyfriends, and I think that's a big shame tbh

Thomas Gilbert

Remember “Dalek” from Series 1, Eccleston was looking at the Cyberman head in Henry Vanstatans museum. These were an older version of the Cybermen from Classic Who. That’s how the doctor recognises them.

Firefly24601

Barty Crouch vs. Barty Crouch Jr, the rematch!!!! ...same result.

funnylilgalreacts

In the US medical world they are “ammonia inhalants” so just think of ammonia but dialed to 10. It’s quite literally breathtaking

Cen

Having that dialed to 10 can't be good for anyone's health then again if they didn't wake up in time an exploding factory underneath you can't be healthy either

overdev

Mr Lumic and the Doctor were also in Harry Potter 4 as Barty Crouch and Barty Crouch Junior :D

EGT Entertainment

i do think Mondassian Cybermen are more scary

Ashy899

Only one more episode to go until we reach, in my opinion, the best episodes of the season...

If you think info from classic who is a spoiler then this comment is a spoiler, but I think it's more general context than anything cause this definitely would have been on your radar if you were watching NuWho as it aired. Maybe someone can chime in and advise if Angela should avoid the next sentence. You mentioned the Doctor having infinite lives - in classic who it's established that Time Lords have 12 regenerations (13 lives total).

Rich K

I don’t think this is a spoiler at all, it’s somewhat required knowledge for Smith’s run but they never really spell it out.

Jeremy B

I’m with you, Angela, Mickey’s character arc is perfectly wrapped up here. He’s finally given up waiting for Rose, moved on and found a purpose and turned into something of a hero himself. Thank you for posting the part two video so quickly after the first part. I know how much editing work that must involve for you and Xander, but it’s much appreciated, especially with two-part stories like this one. You mentioned the Daleks’ origins, well if you want to watch one of the very best Classic Who serials featuring a young Sarah Jane alongside the fourth Doctor, I can strongly recommend 1975’s ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ (comprised of six 25-minute episodes, each ending on a cliffhanger!). Action, social commentary, moral dilemmas, war movie, dark humour and more. The pacing is slower than New Who, but it’s a story that’s rightly regarded as a classic.

Carl Wilson

it feels like a bit of a stretch that he can be so sure Mickey's watching - the Doctor's at central command, so of course he's got monitors, but I don't think he can be certain the dirigible does too. But it's a Who kind of stretch that I'm happy to go with for the sake of that brilliant run of doubletalk from the Doctor.

Josef Schiltz

That is the basic look we were introduced to in 1966. Most of the original serial still exists.

Josef Schiltz

Just an additional note to this in that Sarah Jane was already familiar with Daleks previous to Genesis. Highly recommend a visit to this serial.

Ken Penttinen

I think it’s a little deeper than that. Assuming New Ricky lives more than 25 years, then he would have been Ricky longer than he was Mickey so it begs the question: Are you who you were born as or do you only know who you are at the end via an inspection of the sum of your life experiences?

James Fleischman

Yeah the Doctor hasn't been cruel to Mickey - it's just that at some level the Doctor knew all along that Mickey was heading here and ,maybe he needed to manoeuvre Mickey to be at the right place at the right time and also to stay behind afterwards. 4D chess has nothing on The Doctor.

Ben

To be fair, going off of the expression on his face when Rose was leaving in 'New Earth', I think he had given up on her at that point, it's just here that he's found a way to properly move on.

Ben

It's slightly spoilery because it does eventually get explained in modern Who about the Regeneration limit and the that The Doctor can still die, but she's quite a way off that.

Wes Rumbelow

It's interesting you compared the Daleks to the Cybermen! In Classic Who, they were the most iconic villains in the show, apart from The [REDACTED DUE TO SPOILER]. In New Who, the Daleks and Cybermen are voiced by the same man, Nicolas Briggs. Side note: I really enjoy your reactions! This is the first ever patreon I've subscribed to! Very happy I did :)

Brianna Gray

I think Mickey had great character development.
