ngl i got my hopes up of two reactions this week so THANK YOU😭🙏

Gambit3838

This is Christmas in August. My favorite reactor showing 2 episodes of my favorite WHO doctor. I could funnylilgal ugly cry. 😭😇

Sean

I love this episode. It's so poignant. The space age clockwork robots really are beautifully designed. The musical theme is top tier as well.

James Miller

I don't know who told you Moffat isn't good over the long haul, but Series' 5 and 6 are the pinnacle of New Who. As for the chemistry between the Doctor and the female actress, I read at the time she was Tennant's real life girlfriend but I never verified that.

DeathSwitch

Idk who told you Moffat wasn't good in the long-term but I'll leave that alone for now 😅 Another banger episode. Side bar, Magic The Gathering made a "Doctor Who" set and this episode was chosen as the only 10th Doctor episode to represent in card form.. you even make a horse creature token for the Doctor to ride

The Girl Who Was Erased

Funny that you mentioned the time traveller's wife, because that's exactly what inspired Steven Moffat to write this episode, he's basically obsessed with the book... some people say it's borderline creepy because in the first scene reinette was a child (which to be honest I can see why they have this opinion) but I think that for this episode Moffat found a good balance of great writing and chemistry between David Tennant and Sophia Myles so in the end it fortunately turned out to be an instant classic

There are just as many people who love moffatts era as there are that hate it. The haters just tend to be louder. I will say that his stories tend to be more convoluted and harder to follow, but his series was the first series to become popular in America. (Unless you count the fourth doctor coming to America in the 80s but it wasn’t really “popular”) My suggestion is, don’t listen to people downing any particular era of doctor who. They all have their ups or downs, and hearing a lot of negativity tends to sway some peoples first impressions… Matt smith, David tennant, and capaldi are equally my favorite doctors, and two of those were from moffatts era. I LOVE moffats writing… I think a show about time travel should be complicated sometimes… it makes you think more. His era is my favorite era… hope you continue to enjoy the series!

cartoonrobot

This season is full of bangers. This is one of my top 5 favorite episodes and one I have rewatched repeatedly. The story, the costume and prop design, so much heart and beauty in one short episode. And of course, the Murray Gold score, always beautiful. To me, this is a perfect episode. The next episode is great as well. They really knocked it out of the park with Season 2. And I love Moffat. People have opinions. Personally I see it as Who always swings for the fences, and that means sometimes some things don't work as well as the others, but I always appreciate the effort.

Josef Schiltz

When this was first shown, it reminded me very much of a series that was on the BBC during my own - and Steven Moffat's - childhood and that was Tales From Europe. A series made up of folk and fairy tales from the continent, such as The Tinder Box and The Singing Ringing Tree. I've often wondered if Steven Moffat was evoking the same atmosphere of these unsettlingly surreal tales.

Justin Smallwood

It catches a lot of hate by the “hard core” whovians… but it was the first era to reach world wide recognition… also many people weren’t fond of some of moffatts writing habits, but I love his era. I thought I’d never like a doctor as much as I like tennant… then smith came out, and I instantly loved his version… then I was devastated when he left and straight up hated capaldi for a solid year… but then he grew on me, and now capaldi is my favorite doctor… smith tennant and capaldi tend to be pretty tied for my personal favorites 😅

Justin Smallwood

Also Moffatt based another fan favorite character off of that book, but I won’t name who they are because of spoilers 🙃

Notes from a Doctor Who fan: 1) The period in which Madame de Pompadour lived was the century before the Victorian Era. At the time, Britain would have been in the Georgian Era, and Europe was beginning what's known as the Age of Enlightenment. Think Regency era, Jane Austen, beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. 2) Moffat is a tricky one. It's pretty universally agreed that he writes some of the best standalone episodes. When it comes to his showrunning, there's a large contingent who hate it, a large contingent who love it, and a large contingent who hated it at first then loved it on a rewatch and ultimately settle somewhere in between. My personal view is that he's great at short stories, but struggles with developing anything longterm, so some of his character development can be a little clunky at times, some of his long-term endings feel a little a rushed or confused, and I feel his portrayal of women can fall into repetitive stereotypes from time to time, but that there's more than enough 'great' to shore up the 'good' and outweigh the 'bad'. You're braced for disappointment, but experienced enough in this game to know that fan negativity doesn't necessarily mean anything, so I think you'll probably be in the right headspace for it when it eventually comes in (I'm not telling) number of seasons. If you dislike something, you'll nod and go 'that's what they told me it would be like' and if you love something, you'll go 'huh, this is actually real fun' and that's all you can really want from a show in the end.

Classic Who Doctor/Companion relationships were different, but if any pairing could be said to be romantic, Sarah Jane would be it. She was on the show from 1973 until 1976, across two Doctors (like Rose) It was never portrayed as romantic, but, especially in season 13 you could say they were a couple. I would say if you ever just wanted to check out classic who for a taster, Stories with the 4th Doctor and Sarah are good choices, Pyramids of Mars, Masque of Mandragora (Season 14), Genesis of the Daleks (Season 12), and then her exit in Hand of Fear. Girl in the FIreplace star Sophia Myles went on to date David Tennent for a couple of years after meeting on this episode.

Moffat seems, in my opinion, to be the best “Time Traveler” writer in Who. A lot of stories are just sci-fi, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but Moffat seems to remember that The Doctor is a time traveler and really uses it…whether you like it or not is up to the individual but you can’t deny he writes Doctor Who episodes, not Star Trek/generic alien sci-fi.

David Vandervliet

Oh I just remembered - during covid, Sophia returned and did an epilogue during lockdown - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seNAqQ4gzn0

I love this episode. So much melancholy and wistfulness, and both Tennant and Sophia Myles sell the hell out of every second of it. Brilliant performances, especially Reinette's final letter to him. The Doctor's "I'm always alright," kills me. Because he is, but also, he never is. Billie Piper is great as well, in a lesser role than usual. She does jealousy, envy, hurt and empathy so well, and that question she asks - "Why her?" has about a dozen different meanings, all beautifully conveyed. A fun bit of trivia about this episode - there was a commentary on the DVD with David Tennant, Steven Moffatt and Sophia Myles, which was a lot of fun. It was the first time David had seen the finished episode, and he had an amazing reaction to realising that, during their mind meld, where she's deliberately showing him... certain things, Sophia opens her eyes and looks at him so boldly. It was a perfect character beat that wasn't in the script.

David Vandervliet

I don't hate Moffat, in fact I have enjoyed his work in Who and beyond (since coupling even) But I feel he works better on individual stories, than running the whole season. He has habits and gimmicks he overuses IMO,

sothcweden

It was just such an interesting concept that Niffenegger came up with, and which others have adapted, even if the way Claire's life was necessarily shaped by Henry's presence is somewhat uncomfortable when we see the whole picture. I remember reading it and flipping back to re-read passages for at least the first 20% of the book or so, trying to get my head around the characters and the situation, that it's one I'll always remember just for the reading experience. And the same goes for this ep and the introduction to the character that Justin Smallwood referred to. The structure of wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stories makes them lean in rather than lean back tales.

Anders Thomsen

"I'm the King of France - Well, I'm the Lord of Time"... I still remember that quote every damn day The next episode has a spoiler IN THE DAMN TITLE

Michael Nolan

Just have to say: How crazy is it that Sophia Myles hasn't had a bigger movie career? A couple of years before this episode she appeared in the first "Underworld" movie. in 2006 she played the female lead in "Tristan + Isolde" opposite James Franco, in 2008 she played the female lead opposite Jim Cavaziel in the insanely fun "Beowulf goes sci fi" film "Outlander". In 2014 she was in "Transformers - Age of Extinction". Apart from these she has mostly done episodic TV work. She has as much fame from dating Tywin Lannister (who is 33 years older than her) as her acting!

Rory Owens

Well that's just heartbreaking. Now I feel sad for an abandoned spaceship.

Brianna Gray

This episode I feel a little bad for Rose. The Doctor makes her feel special, and he's always hinting to her that she means more to him than just a friend and we can tell she feels the same. So seeing the Doctor ready to give up time and space for someone he just met hurts. Sophia Myles is so beautiful though! I admit she's easy to fall in love with, and can also get why the Doctor felt a spark too :P Sophia and David dated in real life for awhile, so the spark was actually real.

Chris Padwick

Two a week, as you promised! Nice one! Mind you, you have 18 years of catching up. You mentioned the chemistry; well, the Talented Mr Tennant & Sophia Myles dated for a while, lucky man that he is. FYI, The Doctor can speak horse. Moffat-penned eps always rate very highly in polls & some of them are astonishing feats of creativity, wit & imagination. No spoilers - no need - just wait. You're in for a treat. I'm not totally in agreement about the argument that he can't make good series but your no spoilers diktat prevents me from going any further. Do we Brits swear that much? Actually. Yes. Have you seen 'The Thick of It'? Proves the point.

matt

Right there with you. Moffat's arc as Showrunner is one of the most ambitious in television history. (Yes, Moffet haters, I said it!)

Frank J

I never understood the hate that Moffat got from some online commenters when he was showrunner. His era was actually always my favourite. And I don't think that I'm in a minority.

Lucifer_Crowe

Yeah, I wouldn't say Moffat's series is PERFECT but they're still probably my favourite.

Firefly24601

Not just two this week, but THESE two??? YAAASSSS!!!!

Eefa

I’m not even aware of specific Moffat “HATERS” (though, I’m sure they exist), but if we want to be non-spoilery as possible let’s just say, many don’t like some specific elements of his writing, that he tends to repeat (and, has outside of Who). I adore his Doctors and love his companions, he just has weaker areas, blind spots, as any writer does. Saying that, a lot of people don’t like Rose and the Doctor being all smiley and giggly with each other, or as you mentioned, Mickey being a lingering presence still. Many would consider those as flaws of RTD’s run, so there’s things to love and hate in every era, of course it’s only for you to make your own mind up when you get there :)

Eefa

Right, not just teenage jealousy, but quite literally the massive betrayal of potentially being left for dead in space for a woman that your tour guide has only just met😅

David Vandervliet

See I always felt Moffat's time travel use was a bit naff, he relies on bootstrap paradoxes (You only knew what to do because I remember watching you do it, etc) and such.

David Vandervliet

I feel his first and last seasons were his best, but I feel season 4 was the best of all the series to date. Moffat had a tendency to hang to things past their sell by date. For me almost all the companions hung around just a bit too long.

Craig

Moffat hit the biggest highs and lows and people chose to focus on the lows

Tommy

I’ve always loved Moffat, he has really grand ideas that start off with such simple concepts. Sometimes he has trouble translating that fully to the screen, but his one-offs are always hits, and even as a showrunner he produced some of my favorite story arcs, doctors, and episodes of all time. Doctor Who has been incredibly lucky in its revival to have talented people who really care about it take the helm.

Jeremy B

Two Doctor Who videos in one week? You’re spoiling us! Thank you! Another superb standalone episode from Moffat – a beautiful love story across time. You're right to pick up on the similarities to 'Time Traveller's Wife'. Moffat was a big fan of that book, which came out just a few years before this episode aired - and later wrote a TV adaptation in 2022, which was cancelled after one season. You’re absolutely right that Moffat’s standalone stories during Russell’s era were some of the best ever episodes of Doctor Who. Personally though, I loved his season arcs when he took over as showrunner. They were maybe more ambitious in scope, demanding audiences pay more attention to follow them fully, and arguably he didn’t quite nail the landing once or twice, but it was always a journey well worth going on. They’re not perfect, but you’ve plenty to look forward to! ps – Madame de Pompadour was indeed a real person, the official chief mistress of King Louis XV from 1745 to 1751 (most French kings very openly had a mistress installed at Versailles), so approximately 100 years before Britain’s Victorian era. Apparently, Louis was so devoted to her, he nursed her through ill health until she died from tuberculosis in 1764.

Space Monkey Mafia

Honestly, I can't wait for your reactions to the next two doctors. 11 was great also, but I always loved 12.

Ben

Regarding the comment 'Steven Moffat is great at individual episodes but not long term' - comment sections tend to get filled up with the same kinds of fans, but rest assured there are plenty of people, myself among them, who believe Moffat's era to be the pinnacle of New-Who. Just as there are fans for every other era, Doctor, companion, etc. Best not to let those preconceptions cloud your judgement :)

JBK405

I think I made this same comment back in your first Moffat episodes, but with regards his 'popularity' he's not universally hated or universally loved. But the reception is always strong one way or the other. Nobody is 'meh' on his work. There isn't a single person who says "Oh yeah, I never gave him much thought". Make of that what you will. I am a huge fan of Sophia Myles, and was even back when this first aired. I always hoped she'd get a bigger career, and I still can't believe that she never really took off. She's great in everything she appears in (Even if the overall product is sub-par). To answer your question of why Rose had to give her the message, it's because the events were happening simultaneously on the ship. Remember, The Doctor didn't have any control over where the time windows went. The Doctor was trying to jump through to her at that moment during the Big Attack, and if he came here instead then he would have just missed the attack and they would have taken her brain.

JBK405

I had somehow never seen this, and that is HAUNTING. Wowza.

Space Monkey Mafia

Are you planning on checking out Torchwood after this season?

Paul Bristow

I actually love Moffat's long arcs as showrunner. Some work better than others, but hey, that's life. I think it's more that Doctor Who benefits from having plenty of variety in the storytelling, and Stephen Moffat's stories/plotlines are all very recognisably *his*, so if his taste in plotting doesn't match yours then after a few seasons it can get a bit frustrating waiting for something different to come along. That said, when he does shake things up, he totally knocks it out of the park.

Wes Rumbelow

I understand that there is a group of people who believe that Moffatt is a better collaborative writer than show runner, and while you could argue that point, that doesn’t inherently mean he’s a bad show runner. In fact, I FIRMLY believe he is the BEST show runner in the show’s entire 60 year history. I absolutely adore Russell T Davies as a writer AND show runner, but Steven Moffatt is even better. I can’t wait for you to keep watching, the very best is yet to come 👀
