I hate that I have to work and wait till later to watch this. 😠

David Vandervliet

If you notice, The Christmas Invasion credits list David Tennant as playing The Doctor. Over the entire first season, Eccelston was credited as Doctor Who. In the classic series for the first 4 Doctors, he was credited as Doctor Who, but with the fifth Doctor he began to be credited as The Doctor.

David Vandervliet

If you remember, Mickey got the password to get into the UNIT systems back in World War III/Slitheeth invasion. He's used it ever since. Not sure if this is a spoiler, since it's A classic series reference, the military team here, UNIT, was also in that story, and was a big part of the original series in the 70s. Which is how they know what Martians look like.

Brad Enervold

David Tennant is my favorite Dr. Who. I did start out with Christopher Eccleston, but just like I did, you will quickly grow to love him. (that is why they have brought him back at least 3 times). He also has a great catch phrase. Have fun on your new journey !

TurtleKungFu

An easy way I wrapped my head around regeneration is comparing it to the Trill from Star Trek. Since you've seen Star Trek I don't think I have to explain.

overdev

the christmas intro killed me :'D

Josef Schiltz

Regenerations usually mess with the Doctor's brain until it all settles down so he usually goes through a period of disorientated sorting out whilst trying to figure out just who he is. Some of us have seen this numerous times and things usually snap into place fairly quickly. 🤪. . . Mostly anyway! I suspect that when the Doctor called the leader of the Sycorax a "cranak pel casacree salvak!" The TARDIS found the resulting translation so foul that she thought, "Nope! No way am I broadcasting that! . . . and when he gets back in here, I am going to find some way of adding soap to his toothpaste!" Never annoy a TARDIS that knows where your bathroom cabinet is. Sycorax, incidentally, was the name of the foul witch that spawned Caliban, Prospero's deformed servant, in Shakespeare's The Tempest.

David Vandervliet

SYCORAX ROCK! They meant it. in the modern sense. They Rock! Did you notice when we first see them standing in the diamond pose... They are copying Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video.

The Girl Who Was Erased

David Tennant is a powerhouse, and a gem of a human, so I knew you would warm up to him fairly soon, but you're right: it was a great move to let his doctor "sleep" for a good chunk of the episode, so that it gave us the time to grieve Nine, and let Rose act as the surrogate of the audience still adjusting to that change. Also I've been a whovian for years, and it still baffles me how some people say that it's better to skip nine/Eccleston. Like how can you fully understand the story and what drives the characters if you miss a whole season where so much is set up? Not to mention Christopher Eccleston is a legend and nine is too often underappreciated

Michele Jean

I think the thing you will find interesting, is as a kid, the show that inspired a young David Tenant to get into acting was Doctor Who. The 5th doctor was his doctor, so take that information how you will. As for your question, you asked about folks that started Christopher, I had a rough time thinking about my adjustment to David. However, at this point in time David is undoubtedly my favorite doctor. Allons-y!

Aaron D

Whoever created/put together that christmas themed FLG intro did a fantastic job! Perfect use here ^.^ (Also, that double-open and cheerful psychic-paper title screen with the snow was also excellent!) (Also also, regarding an object entering the atmosphere creating a shockwave, the Chelyabinsk meteor event in 2013 is a semi-recent occurrence that caused broken windows and other noise/damage. Not Tunguska level fortunately, but still ...) So, David Tennant cleans up nice, eh?

Jakob

Whenever there’s characters who abruptly reference places or aliens or events like that Unit Solder did and then never bring it up again. Just assume it’s a callback to classic who. The show was on for 20 something years and covered a lot of stuff, like Martians for example. It’s happens from time to time.

Some0neElse

here I am watching a Christmas movie while the temps are 40 Celsius (104 F) outside :D About the Doctor "poofing" into a new body i think the showrunners wanted us to experience the same shock that Rose does. Otherwise it just doesnt work as a powerful moment. As for why he picked that form - if i remember correctly its explained vaguely in about 10 seasons or so. It might have been a fan theory though

Frank Izaguirre

I started with the 4th Doctor, Thomas Baker (1974 - 81) and his various companions at the time Sarah Jane Smith, K9 & Leela on rebroadcast. I didn't pick it up again until the new series so I've only seen bits and pieces of prior and subsequent incarnations. At least until they restarted it with Eccleston.

David Vandervliet

Oh and eventually, not sure how much longer it will take, but they eventually move the "next time on Doctor Who" promo later in the credits

Chris Padwick

Children In Need; it's a telethon.

Some0neElse

by your logic saying stuff like "next episode gonna be fire" is a spoiler

Chris Padwick

One tangential distraction about the show is the number of indie band names that you can invent from bits of the dialogue - 'Rude and Not Ginger' could easily be playing the lower half of the Glastonbury bill. David Tennant is a rather gifted actor and has played Hamlet to great acclaim with Patrick Stewart, no less, as Claudius. You certainly ought to check out Broadchurch and Good Omens.

RedcoatChazzles

Welcome to the 10th Doctor's era! It's going to be a wild one, to be sure. It'll be surprising to see, when you get further into this era, how much the events of this story shape what's to come. Particularly that last encounter with Harriet Jones. David Tennant is a brilliant Doctor and he brings a lot to the role. I think you'll really enjoy things as they go on. You'll feel a lot of things; happiness, joy, sadness, despair, but its gonna be a good time for you hopefully. I started with the 9th Doctor *technically*; I caught The Long Game and watched the odd episode on repeat. I missed The Christmas Invasion but began with New Earth, the episode after it. I always saw the 9th Doctor as a Doctor I should revisit as his era (at least to me) felt grungier, it had a different, unique quality to 10s era. Both eras are good, but unique to each Doctor. Going back to watch those stories back then was worth it and its still worth going back, even with the dated effects, because you can somewhat ignore them for the sake of the story and the world. The impact of Chris's time on the show was so strong for so many people that it created the "Don't Skip 9" rule because Who Fans were noticing a trend, particularly as social media grew in the mid 00s, that newer fans were jumping on with Tennant (and later with Matt Smith). So, and gladly its become the norm now, when someone new is introduced to the show (at least before the new Season 1 with Ncuti Gatwa), the 9th Doctor is shown first and foremost, as he should be, when some asks how they can get into the show.

Peach

Welcome to the 10th Doctor! While Eccleston was my first doctor and I'll always love him, Tennant is my favorite and probably will always be. It broke my heart when he left, but that doesn't mean I don't love the 11th doctor who comes after him. It's a bit of an adjustment, it's understandable, but I know you'll come to love 10 just as much as the rest of the fandom does. Also a side note, Billy and David have such good chemistry, I wouldn't be surprised if they had crushes on each other during filming. Don't quote me on that though.

Alec Campo

I really like how they handled Rose’s reaction this episode. She had her doubts like the entire audience did, had a grieving period over the friend she knew, but at the end of the day accepted it was the Doctor all on her own. Very much an audience insert but it was well done.

Daryl

Everyone join in with me...... "Dude!" Wtaf!

michael mccafferty

I started with Nine, and immediately loved Eccleston. When the Doctor regenerated at the end of season one, my only other exposure to David Tennant was the Harry Potter film, so I had no idea what kind of ride I was in for. Douglas Addams, who wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, wrote for Doctor Who back in the day, so the Doctor referencing Arthur Dent is a nice meta-name drop.

funnylilgalreacts

Let’s try to remain nice and civil in the comments. I appreciate someone pointing out if something is spoilery, send me a DM or put the user name in the chat and I’ll have someone delete it. Everyone seems to have a different definition of what a spoiler is, and arguing about it doesn’t make sense. I appreciate all of you being here and all of your takes on everything.

Felton

Came across your channel a couple of months ago on YouTube. Been meaning to rewatch this show as I've followed it growing up. Really enjoying watching your reactions, love how you get invested asking questions about everything rather than just watching it and moving on! Keep up the good work. If you think Eccleston leaving was difficult, Tennant leaving might make you want to stop watching haha. Love Eccleston (as he's from my area in UK), but in my opinion I do rank Tennant and Matt Smith above him so you're in for a good ride watching this

SweetCandle

When you have infinite space, you might as well make big closets.

Firefly24601

I was never big on Rose as a character, but Billie Piper is a PHENOMENAL actress. The looks of doubt about the Doctor, terror at the Sycorax, and eventually joy that the Doctor is really here... outstanding.

Selganor Yoster

Not a spoiler but a thing to remember: this Doctor regenerated "a fighting hand"

Duncan McCausland

"Don't you think she looks tired" was the rumour that eventually lead to Margaret Thatcher losing her Premiership

Hugh Diffey

"Is it the time vortex changing things?" I just wanted to congratulate you on this big milestone in your Doctor Who fan experience, not just experiencing a regeneration for the first time, but you are also now coming up with better ideas than the writers, which is something we literally ALL take pride in doing. Also speaking of Who writers and seeing that you're a fan of HGTTG, Douglas Adams wrote quite a few Classic Who stories (including the Doctor Who story with the all time highest viewership, City of Death, but that was mainly due to a strike that seriously affected the UK tv industry in the late 70's which kept the two rivals of the BBC off air for various amounts of time) and was script editor for a couple of years.

Craig

The Sonic Wave from hitting the Atmosphere is probably less to do with the speed and more the mass of the ship. Basically it's a great big force hitting the shell of air around the planet like someone smacking a balloon full of water

Russell Crockett

I started with the 7th Doctor and Ace back in the 80’s on PBS, but those were reruns. I was there from Chris’ first episode because I was stoked for new who and have been watching religiously ever since. No spoilers, just letting you know you’re in for a helluva ride!

Josef Schiltz

We need to find a nice calm place . . . . Om, om . . Oṃ maṇi padme hūm̐

Josef Schiltz

Jess said some really nice things about Whovians a few years back but that we are always contentious about stuff. After all, it has been an extremely long-lived series. 1963-1989 and then the continuation, 2005-the present. A great deal of material and happenings to disagree about. One Doctor had a saying, "Happy Times and Places" . . . Nine times out of ten! Eight times . . .

Joel Palenychka

You also commented on how good Billie Piper's acting was to which I would like to recommend: Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Billie does a very emotional portrayal of, well, a confident women in a controversial industry.

Justin Smallwood

That’s not time vortex light. That’s regeneration energy. And every regeneration messes with each new doctor differently. Their first episode is almost always weird… it’s like medication making some people feel weird, some act goofy or loopy, some face mood swings or weird cravings, some people feel sick or sleepy, and have bad reactions as if they’re allergic… but in the long run it’s healing him for the better. the writers of the classic series compared the side effects to a bad acid trip.

Sabrina P

After watching Christopher Eccleston's series, I figured I'd give The Christmas Invasion and the new Doctor a chance, but I was fully ready to just drop the show if I wasn't convinced, because I really thought it likely that it wouldn't be as good without him. Well, after watching The Christmas Invasion I decided that actually, I might just be a Doctor Who fan for life, and that's turned out to be true all these years later!

meglikestosleep

I feel like the webisode is less about making the viewer feel better about the change but more so about helping answer some questions for those who weren't followers of Old Who and get viewers acclimated to Tennant a bit more before the special aired officially.

Cirieno

It's interesting to remember that before this role she was only really known for being a bland girlie-pop singer and being presenter Chris Evans' girlfriend. We didn't know what to expect from her acting but I recall we didn't expect anything good – and were very pleasantly surprised.

Brandon Booth

We actually do know what Martins looks like. They used to show up from time to time in the classic series.

Rare

It’s a very graceful transition. The Doctor embodies change and this is just a part of life. The way I view the regeneration process is that he possesses the same memory but holds a different perspective. I also appreciate how much character building this episode brings. No second chances is quite a strict rule. Tenant brings a certain energy to the role that I think is hard to replicate. All things become entangled of themselves that a clean break is the only way forward. I really, really look forward to your time with this Doctor, now knowing that it won’t last forever.

Rare

I think this was my first introduction of David Tenant as an actor to me. I’m biased as shit, but his role as the Doctor holds a special place in my heart. Especially when the later seasons roll around. I’ll always remember Mars.

Josef Schiltz

We do try NOT to inform upon any future events in series if at all possible!!

cartoonrobot

Yay, my birthday (Christmas eve) is one of Angela’s favorite days. lol

cartoonrobot

Spoilers get tricky with Who. We have decades of lore built up, so things like not bringing up regeneration are like trying to talk about Superman but not mention he can fly. It’s just so integral to the character. Especially since this isn’t really a reboot. You are just kind of picking up on the middle of the series. Like a couple of episodes ago you debated if Matt Smith is 11 or 3. He is definitely 11. Classic who is still canon. Like when he mentioned his ears in the mirror in ep 1. That was his first time seeing his face since regenerating from the previous Doctor.

Dan Hoppel

Don't feel bad, every regeneration is rough, but your first Doctor is always special and hard to let go of. Eccleston was my first too, and I was very against David Tennant...till about the same place you turned around on him too lol. Not even one full episode and I was already excited to see where it was gonna go next.

Colin 3of5

When we see Llewellyn is brought into the military command centre in the episode there is a logo with UNIT on the doors for a split second just as he is brought in to the contol centre. The same Logo is all over the place in the command centre, so IMO the existence of Unit is not a spoiler.

John Williams

My first Dr. was Tom Baker and first companion was Sarah Jane Smith. As stated before, there will be call backs to this era many times during this new series. Many very emotional for us fans of old Who.

Space Monkey Mafia

My intro to Doctor Who was Caves of Androzani. Fifths Doctor last run.

Bryan Macklem

Buckle up, it only gets better from here. In time you're going to wonder why you were so worried about a new Doctor. Sure there are some episodes that aren't so great, but the majority are quite decent and some that can be counted as phenomenal...just don't blink. 😉

Jeremy B

Loved your thoughtful review as always, thanks Angela. This was really smart writing from Russell T Davies. With Ecclestone leaving after just one season, the future of the show was briefly in doubt and Tennant (a lifelong Doctor Who fan) wondered whether his only moment as the Doctor would be that brief regeneration scene. Such a huge response to Season 1 meant it was inevitable the show would continue though, but they had to take the sizeable new audience with them as they experienced their first regeneration. So, seeing the events of the first half of the Christmas episode’s story from Rose's point of view made perfect sense. Along with the fans, she’s struggling to get used to the idea her best friend has completely changed. Tennant’s line ‘Did You Miss Me’ as he exits the TARDIS is his early ‘hero’ moment, announcing himself as the same and yet new Doctor. He just takes command from there. You could argue that the writing deprives Rose of a bit of agency until 10 appears from the TARDIS to save the day, but I like the fact she’s quite prepared to stand up to the Sycorax, even if her words don’t provoke the response she was hoping for! Each new Doctor is very definitely the same person, not just another person with the same memories. They have the same soul, heart(s!), ethics, morality, sense of humour and love of adventure and mischief, etc, although their personalities can vary enormously! Some go on a real journey during their tenure, though they remain the same Time Lord at their core. One key thing here is that Ecclestone's Doctor came immediately after the events of the Time War. By the time Tennant arrives, he's encountered the Daleks again, made different decisions and started to be healed by Rose. As a result he can start to enjoy life again - and even embrace Jackie and Mickey! Change has been baked into the show's dna ever since the first Doctor was written out due to the actor's own ill health and the concept of regeneration was first introduced. Companions too had always come and gone. It's allowed Doctor Who to evolve and sustain for more than 60 years, while at its heart still telling the same story of an ever curious alien in a magic box who travels in time and space and always tries to be kind, never cruel or cowardly. I’m glad you noticed that brightly coloured outfit Tennant briefly picked out in the TARDIS wardrobe. That was the costume he wore in the lead role in Russell T Davies’s adaptation of Cassanova, a three-episode miniseries which aired just weeks before New Who started. You’re right Children In Need is a telethon on terrestrial TV, a very long-running one. Most popular TV shows provide some input, usually a skit or charity appeal, etc, but on this occasion, Russell wanted to use the opportunity to give fans another reason to tune in (and donate money) and wrote a brand new canonical scene to bridge the gap between Season 1 and the Christmas special. Lots of great stories to look forward to with Tennant – you’re in for a great time (though don’t throw those tissues away just yet!)

Nikkole

This was the first episode I watched - I was testing out the waters until the Lion King line, at which point I realized this show was made for goofs like me. That plus the sword fight and HGttG reference. TENnant is definitely silly while having gravitas and great chemistry with Rose in this episode alone, and he was only awake for like 20 minutes lol. I hope you have a lot of fun with Ten!

funnylilgalreacts

OK because of this comment I ended up re-watching the entire reaction 😂 because… Same. The show is definitely made for goofs like us.

Anders Thomsen

I caught myself thinking "did they ever have a ginger character on Who?" and then I remembered my favorite companion...

George

Tennant is great but he's Scottish, from the same town as I am, so his phony accent gets on my tits. Love you!

Matthew Paul

I'm living vicariously through this journey. So excited for what's ahead!

Mintie

My favourite thing about David Tennant was when he was 13 he wrote in an essay that he was convinced he would get to play the Doctor on tv. He loved the show so much that he was a great choice for the role. I also was devastated to lose Christopher Eccleston and wasn't ready for a new doctor. I watched this episode and was reluctantly like "I guess he's okay" and then I grew to love him. I never watched classic who so it took me a bit to settle into the thought that it's not an either/or situation. I could love them both for their similarities and differences.
