Doctor Who Christmas Special 2005 FULL LENGTH Reaction | The Christmas Invasion (+ bonus webisode!)

FULL LENGTH REACTION

Azmat Mahmood

Despite only really appearing in the final 20 minutes of it, this episode does a brilliant job of establishing all the different aspects of the 10th Doctor and his personality. You can immediately feel that this is one of the most charismatic, outwardly friendly and happiest Doctors we've had yet, which is especially evident coming after the sad and traumatised 9th Doctor. It's also obvious that this is one of the funniest and cheekiest Doctors to date. His strong sense of morality and fierce sense of duty to protect and right all the wrongdoings he sees is on full display too, almost to the point of self-righteousness and arrogance and that's the thing. Underneath the surface, there's also a darkness and anger, more so than almost any other Doctor before him. There are few Doctors that have as much of an edge to him than the 10th Doctor and this makes him very dangerous. To friends and foes alike, as we saw from what he did do the Sycorax Leader and Harriet Jones. The duality of the 10th Doctor is what makes him one of the most compelling Doctors and the best part is we only got a small taste of what's to come from him here. All these different aspects will get a lot more development in the episodes to come. It's no surprise that he's up there alongside the 4th Doctor (played by Tom Baker) as the two most popular Doctors and he's my personal favourite too, so I hope you love him as much as I do. P.S Did you see my two comments on Bad Wolf yet? I posted them on the Max/Blu Ray post for the finale.

Which version is this?

Marquie Minx

Just where am I supposed to find this bonus episode?

Moricant

Children in Need is indeed a telethon, run annually by the BBC in November. They occasionally include special episodes like this to boost viewing numbers.

Cal Potter

Amazing episode! The next season is so fun and this Doctor is the real deal

eladrin22

I just realised something. Harriet asked sally what her name was because in the Slitheen episode, the assistant died and she regretted not asking him his name.

Bad day for humanity..good day if you're a glazier(and have any blood type that isn't A+). As much as it hurt to lose Christopher Eccleston in Parting Of The Ways, the Doctor doesn't change...much...from the end of Series 1 to this Christmas special. Also, I loved the nod to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with the throwaway line about Arthur Dent. Also, that "bigger on the inside" is more true than we'll ever know. If that was just the wardrobe, I can't wait to see the library properly, and everything else the TARDIS has tucked away inside her corridors.

I'm glad you're warming up to him so soon. The "that's not what Martians look like" line was just a reference to classic Who as Pertwee's 3rd Doctor was involved with UNIT. That's all I'll say about that 😂 I love David's charisma. I love how he's just as comical and just as serious as Christopher but in his own way too. Plus David just has that smile that makes you all warm inside. I found Doctor Who at a very low point in my life. I'd just lost a good friend during COVID so I didn't get to say goodbye. So binging from Christopher to Jodie within a month's time was quite the ride and it pulled me out of the dark pit I was falling into. I also find comfort in shows that last a long time so while the goodbye was hard, the story lived on with David and all the ones to come :) Hopefully that was helpful lol 😅

Reading those two comments I left about Bad Wolf again, I realize I may have come across a little condescending and if that's the reason why I'm being ignored, I apologize. That wasn't my intention.

Azmat Mahmood

Okay, well do let me know what you think once you've read it and the two other comments I left also (those are on the Max/Blu Ray post for Parting of the Ways), be warned though, those comments are even longer!😅

So Micky was able to watch what was going on with his laptop because he still has the password that the Doctor gave him several episodes ago. Remember when the Doctor gave Micky the ability to hack in so he could send that missile to destroy the Slitheen? That password :) I don't think the "Don't you think she looks tired" line worked because Harriet is a woman. I think it would've been equally effective if the prime minister was a man. In most countries, bringing the leaders mental and physical health into question is a pretty effective way to undermine them. (Granted, our country is a little weird) Welcome to the beginning of the David Tennant era. You might want to start keeping tissues nearby.

A lovely reaction. And don't worry, the show has always been thus. You miss the Doctor, all of them. Yet you find yourself entranced by the next. All the way back to 1966 when the First Doctor collapsed . . . As for Harriet Jones' fate . . . . There are many allegories here to Margaret Thatcher. The attack on the Sycorax's Ship, as it is leaving the area of conflict, is roughly analogous to the sinking of the Argentine cruiser Belgrano during the Falklands War. It was one of the most controversial moments of that conflict and is still debated. Over 300 Argentine sailors were killed when a British submarine torpedoed the ship despite her heading away from the conflict zone at the time. There are arguments on both sides, which is why the debate has gone on for so long. Is it still justifiable to attack an enemy who doesn't pose an immediate threat, because of the future potential they have to cause one? As for "Don't you think she looks tired". There are the words uttered about Margaret Thatcher right at the end of her Premiership. She was losing an internal party battle and many felt it was time for her to go. It was those words, and the atmosphere they created which helped spur on the rebellion in her own ranks and, ultimately, made her position untenable. They've become famous in British political life as coda for a leader, who's potentially doing more harm than good and needs to be got rid of. I'm sure someone said the same thing about Biden in the last few weeks . . .

Moricant

Odd, there are evidently different audio mixes available of this. In the one I am familiar with, when the alarm bell rings continuously, you can hear a slower and more sonorous chime in the background. This is the cloister bell, an old bit of Who lore that indicates forthcoming disaster.

Just a minor correction: the golden light particles that occasionally emanated from the Doctor's mouth weren't part of the Time Vortex (all of that was returned before the Ninth Doctor's departure); it's regeneration energy. It mostly appears when the Doctor "explodes" into his next incarnation, but occasionally a bit of it appears at other times.

XanderWhat

Hey all, there's only one Full Length version because HBO and Amazon appeared to be the same this time. But if you're watching on Bluray or something and it's not syncing up, let me know! And be sure to note whether the reaction is too fast or two slow!

Hey Angela, I was brought up on Classic Who my first Doctors were Jon Pertee and Tom Baker. Then I watched New Who when it began in 2005. Your tearful YT reaction to Dalek appeared on my feed, which I enjoyed. Since then I've seen a lot of your reactions including Firefly and Wednesday. Now I've caught up with your Doctor videos it will be like when I first watched the series having to wait a week for each new episode. I can't wait for Wednesday now!!

Ejigantor

So, my take on the "Don't you think she looks tired" bit is that it was Harriet's own reaction to the words that actually caused her downfall - If she had taken the response of "Nothing, really" and just moved on, it wouldn't have have become a thing. It was her fear leading to her behavior that ended her. I watched the classic series, so I was prepared for regeneration going in, and just accepted it when it happened as par for the course. I know other commenters have said that the fanbase call themselves "Whovians" - I don't consider myself one; I've always self-identified as a "Wholigan" and part of the distinction is that I'm not a super-fan; I loved what I saw of the classic series, but the extent of my access was the episodes aired on PBS on Saturday nights after Red Dwarf back in the 90s. I started with Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor - and generally agreed to be the absolute worst by Whovians, but it was literally all I knew. And then Sylvester McCoy became the Seventh Doctor, and I like him much more (he's MY Doctor - every fan has one just like every Bond fan has THEIR Bond) and watched through until the show was cancelled, and the Made-For-Fox TV Movie where McCoy becomes Paul McGann, and was right back in when it came back in 2005, but I've never gone back and watched older classic Who and have only seen one or two episodes from prior Doctors that would air during pledge drives sometimes. All of which is to say, I can't speak to regenerations prior to 6>7, but 9>10 was vastly better; Classic series spoiler: 6>7 consists of the episode opening on McCoy wearing Baker's costume and a wig, filmed from behind, hitting his head on the TARDIS console and regenerating. Ecclestone definitely got a superior sendoff.

Starting with Tennant is so annoying. The entire point of the first season is to introduce you to the doctor and guide you to understand the show. Rose (in the first season) is literally designed to be a stand-in for the audience and help guide them through everything (especially the regeneration).

sothcweden

Haven't watched the reaction yet, but regarding the not liking Tennant in HP, I believe I read that the mouth/tongue thing he did in that role (which I didn't like) was not a choice he made. Because they were nominally still children's movies, apparently the director required it so people would recognize the connection between the Polyjuiced version and the real BC, Jr. Just FYI!

Paul mix

My rip from the original U.S. DVD release at least appears to sync up (that release is at 29.97 fps). I haven't re-bought the BluRay releases, so not sure if they re-conformed it.

Joel Palenychka

The first hint of Torchwood and how it's a darker series. Just having it touch on Doctor Who's gentler atmosphere is... a bit jarring. Still not as dark as the series itself.

FalcorDragon

Those controllers they are holding are 100% Xbox controllers painted gold with some various attachments on them to make them look a little more alien... :P

FalcorDragon

Also... I don't THINK this is a spoiler of anything but it's happened a few times... it's kind of a running joke... literally every time... as far as I know... that Harriet Jones introduces herself... EVERYONE, even aliens responds with... "Yes, I/we know who you are" *evil grin* It makes me giggle every time. :)

FalcorDragon

The "Tired" line shows how the media can latch on a narrative and hound someone until it becomes true... Sounds a bit too familiar lately :-/

Daxeah

When I first watched Doctor Who, I rage quit when Christopher changed to David... I was so mad. I then watched Jessica Jones and he was so good in it I gave Who a second go and fell in love with David's interpretation of the doctor.

sothcweden

I'm watching the original US DVDs on a DVD player, and the sync was perfect. But thank you so much for the slow versions you do make!

Paul Villanueva

Just a suggestion without any spoilers. Season/Series 3 you should watch at the same time as Torchwood Season/Series 1. Trust me you will like Torchwood.

Thomas Wendel

What your feeling in normal. It's a lot for everyone when the Doctor regenerates. Welcome to the club

Kevin Bartelen

Martians from Mars have shown up a few times in Classic Who so the government agency in charge of this stuff (UNIT) does in fact know what they look like.

Sorcerer Rumburak

Imagine the biggest spaceship you can think of - the TARDIS is bigger! 😉 We usually only see the control room.

Sorcerer Rumburak

In the Whoniverse-Timeline Torchwood Season 1 takes place between Doctor Who Season 2 und Season 3 (Episode 11). Anything more to say would be a spoiler. 😉

Eddie

When the Doctor is looking for a new outfit, he's holding a red one from his TV show Casanova. He stared in it and Russel T. Davis wrote it. It's only 3 episodes and it's worth reacting to :D

Woodrow Petrovic

I started with 9 and am current now. It's always: massive heartbreak, whatever, they're fine, I like them, I LOVE this doctor, massive heartbreak, . . . It's worth it though.

The Inedible Mattman!

Go back and rewatch the very first part where they crash land. Notice Mickey (Noel Clark) when the Doctor is holding on to him and Jackie. You can see Noel is about to crack up and lose it. It’s one of my favorite “breaks” they kept in.

JBK405

I started with Nine, but I had an easy transition because I already knew about Regeneration as a concept, and because the news had leaked early that Christopher Eccleston was leaving after the first season so I knew it was coming. That made the switch easy for me to bear. It's interesting that you saw Tennant in Jessica Jones first, because many people see his performance as Kilgrave as a sort of commentary on the Doctor. He used an Estuary accent for The Doctor, and used the same accent for Kilgrave instead of his natural accent or a different English accent. Many people noted that Kilgrave's use of his powers to get other people to do violence on his behalf is similar to how The Doctor always claims to abhor violence, but frequently brings along companions or associates who will do violence while he claims to be above it. I disagree with those who shout "SEE THE DOCTOR IS EVIL AND THIS IS HOW IT LOOKS TO EVERYBODY ELSE!" but it's definitely interesting when looked at from that perspective.

JMonkey10

I started with Nine, but 10 is my doctor. I was 4 when this show rebooted back in 2005, but even back then I watched the show with my family and absolutely loved it. I think the reason 10 is my docotr is partly due to nostalgia, but mostly i think it's the fact that he really made me care for the character. Despite being 4/5 all the way to 10, I understood his characters emotions through the acting. I think 10 is one of if not the best casting/ acted the doctor has ever been

ZapWing

Nine was always my favorite Doc. Back then, Ten was also top dog, but they've both since been de-throned. Enjoy the ride :) This Doc has the best episodes!

OldGeekScott

Love that they changed doctors after 1 season of the modern iteration, it set up,so much for those that are new to the series, hated that it went down in a negative way in the background, Christopher was a great Doctor and deserved better…
