I love this episode for Rygel. Because it's not just that he sent the pirates off in the wrong direction, he was right on his other point also. These are pirates, "do you really think they'd have let us leave unmolested?" and he knew it from the start. He established the blow-off with Pilot, and then began the Con, and the show pulls the same con on the audience. There's a marked shift in his behavior; in the start of the episode he's being annoying because he's bored, but then the con starts so of course he's having fun, he's just being his normal, obnoxious, condescending self such as both the crew, and we the audience, have come to expect from him, but because we the audience have been primed by what was happening before, we don't think too much about what he's doing - which is capturing and holding the attention of the pirates. The crew certainly don't have much of value, but there are at least some things - Aeryn's Prowler for example - that they likely would have taken had Rygel not stolen their focus. And then he orchestrates the climax and conclusion of the game to setup the giveaway of the false information. Of course he couldn't tell Zahn, because he needed her reactions during to be authentic, and she's not that good of an actor (To be clear, I'm referring to the character from Rygel's perspective, Virginia Hey is astonishingly good) because she's far too honest, and it was her reaction that sold the pirates on the validity of it. It worked so well that when the pirates left they didn't even stop to collect the gems that had been wagered. And it worked so well on us watching that we're furious at him until he lets us and Zahn in on what's been going on in front of our eyes this whole time. It was so much fun watching you take that ride. And then there's the John and Aeryn of it all..... You were content with the CPR pseudo-kiss, and then the real thing happens so soon after! Frell but I love this show!
