We are officially entering the peak of the season! You will absolutely love the second half of season 1 Also we all have this love-hate relationship with Rigel. The guy is a genius when he wants to but 90% of the time he thinks only of himself

Notes from a Farscape fan: 1) Putting this point first because it's relevant to the second I'll make - I highlighted in a previous episode that one of the things that makes this show great is defying genre convention and narrative expectation by threading realistic responses to bizarre sci-fi scenarios throughout. We are trained to think that the put upon crew of our ship will surely be threatened by the pirates, that the pirates will surely want to steal our ship - but no, it turns out that's obviously a stupid idea because pregnant leviathans are incredibly dangerous to the people on board, a fact we already knew from the episode where we learn she's pregnant. Rygel doesn't just get one over on the pirates by throwing a game, he then complains that throwing it was more difficult than expected because the pirate was so bad at the game - little 'unecessary' details of realism. 2) Seeing Ms Angela 'Hates Main Character Romance' Funnylilgal squeal at the Aeryn/Crichton kiss is evidence enough that there's something different about this pairing, and I maintain that the unique quality is inexorably linked to my first point above. Aeryn and Crichton have had realistic building tension up to now, and then they kiss - but they haven't started a relationship. In a story, this is when they'd do that, in real life this is just the confirmation of mutual attraction that then leads to more overt flirting. This potential relationship isn't annoying because it feels real - this isn't Main Character A and Main Character B starting Obligatory Relationship, this is just Aeryn and Crichton being, well, Aeryn and Crichton. And the lesson learned from the experience isn't even 'we like each other', it's 'Aeryn doesn't want to die alone.' 3) I love Rygel so very much, but you are having precisely the correct reaction to him. Let the show trick you into getting angry at him, if only so that his tricks always pleasantly and infuriatingly surprise. I hope you never get truly annoyed by his character's presence, because his character also follows the core tenet of realism - he's a greedy dick. Even if he does good things, even if he grows, he's still him. But whether you love him or hate him, I do want to highlight something else I said way back before you started watching, when we were recommending the show: you forget he's a puppet right? The Henson company are wizards.

My favorite part of this episode is the way Claudia Black delivers Aeryn's line, "Is somebody DOCKING?!" Like, "screw saving my life, I was looking forward to spending the last of my life screwing." Oh, also? Nice job on those edits, Nathanael. 😆

I have not had any time to watch anything other than the stuff that I’m recording other than when I’m relaxing and typically that’s watching game changer or something I don’t have to think about too hard.

Not only for his own safety, but I also think Rygel got huge amusement out of annoying Zhaan. He could have told her his plan, it's not like she can't keep a secret. I think he literally only did that because Zhaan wouldn't play a game with him. If she had learned early that the game is about bluffing, she would had saved herself from a lot of anger. However, to have the gonads to let the Kcrackic countdown to 1 on his execution shot just to sell the bluff is sort of insane. For all his burpin' and schemin', can I only imagine what his royal life was like. He's got a mean streak for such lil' guy. What's also surprising to me is that, I think Zhaan has been getting less and less helpful to the crew since "That Old Black Magic" and I think this episode is where it's become the most apparent. Not a judgment on Zhann (I love her), but I think the events of that episode really knocked her off balance. She couldn't console Dhargo at the end and she didn't even realize what Rygel was doing, nor could she help with Crichton and Aeryn. It seems unlike Zhaan when she's at her best, which she's usually at.

Rygell will surprise you. He knew he needed to sell it and by not filling in Zhann he really sold his play. Having her pissed off with him made it real. Rygell was right "Crikey" was an easy mark. As far as weird goes, this show will always surprise you by taking those hard unexpected turns. But this is the tamer calm before the weird tsunami.
