Crazy that a Dalek would rather die than have to feel compassion. Terrifying concept. And yes, they absolutly were in Classic Who, since the second story in 1963! Ooh btw US and UK baked beans are actually quite different, which makes beans on toast seem more horrifying to americans than it really is!

To make it short: Yes, the Daleks are from the Classic Series.

I'd be interested to know what the difference is! It doesn't sound terrifying to me personally but I'm also part raccoon, pretty sure 😂

This is such a powerful episode, the genuine compassion he has for an old enemy when he sees a dead one's head on display compared to the pure hate he displays towards the Dalek combined with the way he delivers it... you can tell just how much pain and suffering the Daleks have brought him. It's scenes like this that really bring out The Doctor's deep inner feelings that really get to me the most. I suppose they are kind of like the Borg... The Borg want to assimilate other races into their own, whereas the Daleks just want to destroy it, but it's a similar level of threat. That assimilation, however, is what ended the threat of this Dalek so what makes the Borg strong is actually what makes the Daleks weak when/if it occurs. I haven't watched a HUGE amount of classic Who but, from what I can tell, they've been a staple enemy that I believe has been in every single season of classic Who, or at least enough that what I've seen makes me think they probably have been. They were introduced in episode two while the mission statement for the show specifically said, "No bug-eyed aliens." and they may have saved the show from obscurity because audiences loved them instantly.

I liked how Rose inadvertently changing the Dalek through genetic mutation is a literalisation of her relationship with the Doctor. It is through Rose that the Doctor accesses his compassion and care. The Doctor/companion relationship is kind of unique in media.
