Notes from a Doctor Who fan: 1) The Daleks aren't just from Classic Who, they're from all the way back to the first season of the first Doctor. They became as iconic as the TARDIS and the Doctor himself with regard to the show. 2) The Dalek design is so great, because divorced of the show they just look like silly pepper pot robots that you couldn't possibly take seriously - then they become the figures of nightmares for generations of kids. I think it's a combination of how slow and unthreatening they seem, and how implacable and unstoppable they are. Oh, you could just run away from them? Well they're still behind you, and eventually you'll run out of breath. 3) I really enjoy the moral question near the end of this episode, where the Doctor points out that the Dalek is changing to become more human and empathetic, then apologises to Rose's confusion. So many fantasy and science fiction shows have these species or factions that are Evil*TM with no rationale, but this episode really highlights that no, for the Daleks, this IS their morality. To become kinder is existentially horrifying to a Dalek. What the Dalek goes through at the end of this episode is like humans who get bit by a zombie - they know they'll change into something monstrous to them, so beg to be killed. 4) A minor one, but Daleks had all emotions removed except hate - and seemingly sassiness. 'You would make a good Dalek.' Mic drop. And all that slow, performative elevation, for the drama. The most flamboyant screaming squid in a pepper pot ever.

Actually the first time i saw dr who was the second half of this ep on tv back in 05/06.

I haven't see all (or probably even most) of the Eccelston Who episodes, but this was definitely one that I was looking forward to you seeing because of the powerful range of emotion and acting once it got under way.
