Hello everyone,

So I transferred the End of Evangelion portion from the Blu-ray, and it’s showing a runtime of 2 hours+

That’s certainly a bit longer than I was expecting, is this the actual runtime ? Or something else is included with it ?

Thank you.

This is a difficult question to answer without spoiling aspects of the format of Evangelion's endings and how they came about. Particularly with relation to the "director's cut" episodes 21-24, there's some information that would help you understand what all this means after you've watched End of Evangelion but before you do your deep-dive review. If your EoE video will be very different to your TV reactions anyway, have you considered making a post once you've watched the film and written down your initial thoughts for people to give you any contextualising information that might help your underatanding of these latter portions of the show re: the production, the format etc.? A lot of this concerns this semi-recap semi-preview "Death & Rebirth" you might have heard about by now. Mild format spoilers below. Really unsure how much to say without spoiling meta- aspects of your first watch but suffice to say your 2+ hour blu-ray copy may incorporate parts of "Death & Rebirth" depending on the exact source you used. If the first title card you see that isn't a company logo says "This is the way Evangelion: Death was meant to be seen" in red Japanese text you have a version called "Revival Of Evangelion" that most (not all) would consider unnecessary if you have seen the Director's Cut episodes, which you have.

Nothing to add, just want to say I'm hyped

2023-11-03 08:39:28 To echo what another comment said, the release of Eva is really messy and weird. Even with the tv show itself, like there's the "Director's cut" but there's also a director's cut renewal version which is like a third version that has some aspects of the original-aired version (I think this is the one you watched) The whole death and rebirth stuff is just a mess that personally I'd recommend avoiding. Just watch the movie, that's the next step after Episode 26 EDIT: From what I can find, it seems there's a chance that your version of EoE will be preceded by "Death(true)²". This (I believe) is a reworked version of two special releases, "Death" and "Rebirth". The former is a total recap of the NGE series that's over an hour long, and the latter is a regular episode runtime that is essentially a preview for EoE, containing some scenes from it that was released as a way to hold people over. Now going off the runtimes, if yours is just around 2 hours I'm inclined to believe your version only contains "Rebirth". However this is confusing because I doubt they'd release a Blu-ray that has some footage of the movie preceded by the actual movie, repeating the same stuff twice. Additionally, I don't think "Rebirth" on its own has been part of the regular releases for a while, as "Death(true)²" which is a cut down version of "Death(true)" which is a cut down version of "Death" seems to be less redundant as a NGE recap with a couple additional scenes, but no crossover between EoE. BUT, wikipedia tells me that it's 68 minutes, which is almost 3 hours. My recommendation would be to ask your Eva mod/helper if you have one like you do/did with Doctor Who. If not then I suppose just wait and maybe the patrons will collectively figure it out? I could also be overcomplicating it though and you can just watch the whole thing, but I'm wary because it would be really unfortunate if it does include Rebirth and you get basically spoiled on the movie before even watching it all because of the dumb way they market and release Eva content EDIT 2: Ok with a bit more research I THINK the release you have should only include Death, and I believe Death(true)² itself only contains Death, just re-edited (for some reason I thought it was both). So there shouldn't be any risk of the EoE preview scenes being in there, but can someone confirm for me? (at which point I'll edit my comment down so it only has the correct info) If this is true then yeah you can basically just watch from the beginning if you want and then stop when it gets to the movie, or more cleanly if you're using an MKV editor maybe you can see the individual chapters where the movie actually starts?
2023-11-03 04:19:01 Re-editing this comment to keep it concise. The release of Eva is and has been really messy and weird. There's two director's cut of the show (Don't worry, you watched the most updated one), and there's four versions of the Death/Rebirth content. I would personally recommend avoiding it and just watching The End of Evangelion. For one, the recap could fatigue you before getting ready for the movie experience (but if you know what works for you and it would revitalize your interest then dismiss this), but more importantly there's a chance that it contains scenes from the movie. Here's a summary: • Two Evangelion films, "Death" and "Rebirth" were released in between the TV series and the movie as precursors to The End of Evangelion • Death contained a recap of the series, over an hour long, with not much to offer beyond a couple additional scenes and re-editing • Rebirth contained a small snippet of EoE content to hold people over until its full release • "Death(True)" re-edited Death • "Death(True)²" then re-re-edited Death, and I believe is the one you have now So I'm 99% thinking that the Blu-ray (and the Netflix version which seems to be the same as yours) alike don't have any of Rebirth's content but I'm wary to say for sure and would like for someone to confirm this because I'm not certain. Once confirmed I'll delete my comment because it means nothing, but the question is on if the blu-ray contains Rebirth content or not. If this is the case you can just watch the whole thing and I suppose stop before the film. Or if you're using an MKV editor to get the content maybe you can see the individual chapters where the movie actually starts and just go from there?

Yup, and also to add to this: Rebirth is an unfinished snippet, so the animation is slightly rougher in some shots making it even more redundant nowadays

So are you saying it's probably not even included in Im's Blu-ray?
