yay we're back! and this and the next few are some of my favorites so I'm very excited, saying this now so I don't end up like a broken record on each episode lol This one because you get to see more of the every day of everyone, more of the relationship of the three pilots and their personalities and yeah Rei and subtly go hand in hand lol Asuka and Rei conversation kinda went like: Asuka: you think you're so much better than me Rei: I don't think of you. Episode 11 - Normal Orchestra/ Rei, Asuka, Misato Ver. excited for the next and hey just one day of waiting haha

This episode looks so different because it was animated by Ghibli. It's been a really long time but I want to say they animated it as a favor to Anno to help alleviate issues with production. Anno and Miyazaki are fairly close friends.

Will be interesting to get your thoughts on the character of Anno. I feel that one of the things that makes Eva really stand out is the way that Anno really wears his heart on his sleeve in his directing, so to speak. It gives the show a... rare authenticity, perhaps, where Anno is more than willing to let his work get a bit weird, or be inconsistent, or controversial even, if it allows him to express his own character in the most honest way. Of course, directors are always going to stamp their mark on their work, but rarely to the holistic and all-encompassing way in which Anno approached Eva. I think it's that authenticity from Anno that does so much to draw so many people, myself included, into his work, and why it leaves such a lasting impression. Enjoyed the reaction yet again, glad to have these back!

Absolutely agree. When asked what he dislikes about the anime he's made, he said "the parts where I see myself". Really interesting, sometimes self-loathing guy, absolutely worth looking into.

Anno specifically worked on the God Monster in Nausicaa—very clear to see how those designs eventually led him to Evangelion. And he even voices the lead (who is based on Miyazaki loosely) of The Wind Rises. It’s one of the coolest collaborations of two like minded artists. So much love to the craft of both

Part of that authenticity i think comes from how Eva was made—the script was not fixed from the start and the writer’s room / production team was fluidly changing (as evidenced by the shift in animation) throughout. Some of it is made up along the way, which is actually not to its detriment because it allows Anno to be so raw and take risks in each episode.

Yeah 100%, I've heard that production process compared (idk if it was by Anno or one of the producers) to a band having a jam session. It will always have a special place and be difficult to compare to anything else for me because of this. Like my other favorite anime of all time are HxH, Tatami Galaxy, and Vinland Saga, which are also all unique but also (really phenomenal) adaptations. It's impossible for me to say whether I like Eva more or less than those personally, because it's doing something completely different. It's not about seeing a talented team adapting a great story to the screen, we're actually watching the process of the story forming and evolving. It's messier and rawer and really really special.
