Yeah Neil Gaiman doesn't really talk about this episode as oppose to The doctor's wife, maybe scheduling had something to do with a rough script. Are you going to be watching an adventure in space and time after the series finale? (it's not directly related to the story, but it is a great watch!)

I like this episode it has its issues and some weird cyberman powers but that's what you get with this show overall I love it with Matt Smith fighting with himself and Clara taking charge was nice to see -I agree with you about the children this episode doesn't really benefit them and the one is pretty annoying -For the king, you were pretty much correct he just didn't want to go back to that lifestyle (unless there is something I was also missing) -I will say for myself personally I feel like the cheeky remarks are feel so weird to hear because it's so out of character for this doctor and his and Clara's relationship -Excited for the next few weeks the season finale and the specials are great

IMO, with this we're over the rather unfortunate slump that has plagued this season overall and are now getting to my favorite stuff. Everything improves from here for a while: Character motivations, character arcs, character relationships, the show will be more deliberate in what sort of tone it's eliciting, the narrative is more purpose-driven, etc etc. And it's not just because we're nearly done with this season. I really like the finale and specials of S7, and wish we got this sort of clarity and quality much earlier.

Neil Gaiman is also unhappy with this episode. For one thing it was supposed to be in two parts, so he was forced to condense it and cut scenes out of the script. But also apparently the BBC also insisted on forcing some unspecified stuff in, and he really didn't like working with them that time.

I wish we knew more about the situation. Aside from the episode being a massive departure from whatever he had in mind, I wish we knew how exactly a script by him ended up with an episode like this

My understanding is that Gaiman told Moffat he had an idea for upgrading the threat level of the Cybermen and was commissioned to write a story. Initially he was told the companion would be a Victorian governess called Clara, but the BBC wanted a modern day companion so Moffat changed his plans. Then rather late on Gaiman was also told that the script needed to involve two children. All of this made it a difficult experience for Gaiman.
