Yeah, Tsugumi Ohba (the mangaka) definitely ain't great at depicting women. I can somewhat put up with it in Death Note but it gets WAY worse in his later works. Thank you for picking up on and acknowledging it.

It's far worse in Bakuman. (Minor Spoiler): The mc's father tells the mc's mother, in the first 3 episodes that "men have dreams and a woman wouldn't understand". Also, most of the main female cast are simply nags or madonnas. Very juvenile.

Juvenile? Are you aware that authors are both from Japan and at least one of them is male? (We don't know if Ouba Tsugumi is male or female) As for the "Men have dreams and a woman wouldn't understand" line, it is very Japanese thing to say for someone who has a teenage~grown child. So I'd say it's very accurate in that regard. I'm afraid you might get heart attack if you read something like Shima Kousaku series, especially the early parts. Set in 80s Japan, MC is a salaryman at a decently large company. Depiction of women during those times is very accurate. As well as their relationships with men and how they interact. But it's enough to make some modern western feminists foam from their mouth in rage. Not that I approve of 80s, and by modern standards the MC is pretty much a scumbag, but I certainly fall on the "Men have dreams...blah blah" side of the statement. So nah, I ain't behind this "poor depiction of women in Japan written by Japanese guys" statement.

I would just say that these are poorly written characters being stereotypes instead. which there are quite a ton, men and women in Death note, it just happens that the few that do get more development are men. that's it. lets not put a political comment about the author please, its a fucking shonen for gods sake, and current western culture and politics have nothing to do with Japanese culture. We can all agree that female characters could have been more developed but it didn´t and that's it.

Deathnote is back! Lets go!!

@石原 悟 Thanks for your perspective. If you enjoy something, I think you should keep enjoying it regardless of what strangers on the internet think :) And, I think it's important to recognise that people enjoy art differently to you, so if they're critiquing that art, they're not critiquing you. So no need to feel the need to excuse or explain it.

As far as we'd seen on screen, Yotsuba / Higuchi only ever killed people specifically. We didn't get to see instances of people being controlled.
