Gabi’s VA has to be one of the Top 5 in the show for me, maybe even Top 3. She was already great before but this episode just took it to a whole new level. Those screams at the end were so desperate and gut-wrenching. Really amazing. I also loved how you caught the photos of Pieck with the Panzer Unit inside the Cart Titan’s gear, you’re the only (first time) reactor I’ve seen that’s noticed that small background detail.

finally! *_* ,its my fav ep of aot season4 so far, glad you finally got to see it. and thanks for feeling for marley warriors . galliards "please stop" gives me chills everytime, as well as gabys cry of help.

Coloring and art style of this ep are on another level!!

Remember when “Hero” came out, and it felt like the entire show was building up to that moment? It feels like it was actually building up to this episode instead!

Mati D.

The brutality of Eren dismembering Jaw always gets me. Zero hesitation, straight to the point, not overthinking, exactly how he did with the War Hammer when it was transforming. And the music when this happens shows how ruthless he's now, no compasion. Also you can see Mikasa's face showing that this is not the Eren she knew. 10/10 ep.

I really like Armin's titan design. There is a theory that Armin's Colossal doesn't have ears because he doesn't want to hear the screams of the people he kills. I find it really appropriate for his character.

A

The shot of Armin standing in the destruction that he caused... the coloring in the red is so intense. Just wow. Truly amazing shots in this episode.

I was physically shaking by the end of this episode. It was just so jarring, visceral, and cruel. Looks like it had a similar effect on Im.

Some people have said that it's a red mist of blood, kind of like when the Beast Titan threw rocks through the buildings in Shiganshina.

Sasuga Im-san! Sono toori da! Once again an S-class reaction. List of things Im noticed that no other reactors did, that I'm excited about: 1) Zeke's exchange with Levi was double talk. 2) Zeke didn't kill anyone with those rocks. 3) "You're running out of time" is probably referring to the escape plan. 4) Zeke went down way too easy - that was a ploy to kidnap him or fake his death. 5) Im's face when Galliard was hopeful upon Zeke's entrance - like "if only you knew :( " 6) Reiner is coming full circle now that he has to save the Jaw Titan again from being eaten, but this time he can protect it. Also that his partial transformation is symbolic of his true self, the man underneath the armor. 7) The Warhammer Titan's tree formation. 8) Commander Magath's reaction to Zeke, like he's suspicious of him. 9) Carlo's group photo with the Panzer Unit. 10) Jean having hesitations about killing and what that says about his character. 11) Onyankopon being a sign that Paradis has other allies. Things that I didn't even notice that Im brought to my attention! 1) Armin's expression mirroring Bertholdt's during transformation. 2) Magath saying "Protect Pieck" which shows he cares about her as a person instead of as a tool. 3) Armin shooting his ODM gear up in the air after coming out of the Colossal., and sounds of the blimp ahead. (Seriously? I did NOT notice that at all.) And my favorite Im line in this reaction? "Go on Galliard! Give him a fight!"

Oh I should also mention that Hiroyuki Sawano did the music for the Paradis side while Kohta Yamamoto did the music for the Marleyan side this episode! Wonderful display of how incredible these composers are!

This might be the most brutal episode of the show, just visceral brutality. My favorite scene is the ending one. When I watched that for the first time, I just lost it when Gabi started screaming and only stopped bawling when the episode was over. Seeing Reiner get up for his kids is so fucking good. This entire arc has led up to this point for him, and it's so satisfying seeing him get up, despite everything we've seen in the last 7 episodes.

Ideophagous

There are some top reactors who noticed a good chunk of these, but certainly none who noticed all of them. Im is in a league of his own when it comes to observation and analysis ability.

He finally remembered something wrong. When he mentioned that Jean going into the apartment was reminiscent of season 1 he mistakenly mentioned it was before they knew the titan was Eren. It was actually during the mission to distract the titans to let Eren move the bolder. I'm just commenting that for the first time I remembered something that he didn't. Its rare. I need to celebrate it. But in all seriousness. I am a new patreon. I love your content and I hope you keep it up.

Just a point about "Eren Jaeger is not my enemy", it was pointed by the Japanese viewers that the translators did a poor job at translating this one literally. When someone say "X is not my enemy" in that context in Japanese, it means "This person is not up to my level, so I cannot even consider him/her my enemy".

Anonymous

You're the one remembering wrong actually. He's referring to episode 8 at 7:10 (looked up the timestamp just now). Jean bypasses titans and crashes through the window of a building just like in this episode. The end of that same episode is when they find out the titan was Eren. Sorry to ruin the celebration...

The episode after "Hero" was called "Midnight Sun". There is a going theory that the name "Midnight Sun" is a future reference to Armin's transformation in this episode. When you look the first few seconds of Armin's transformation he's giving off so much light and energy it looks almost like a sun rise, despite it being in the middle of the night.

You said 4x8 is coming early. Can you tell which day and date it is?

Thanos D. Alexioy

Usually Attack on Titan episode tittles make sense to me (like, basement, declaration of war, the battle of trost etc). When i saw s3 ep18, it did not made sense. I could not understand what the "Midnight Sun" stands for.I thought it was some poetic shit i did not get. Then we reached this episode and we see armin turning into the Collosal at midnight in Marley, turning the night into day and everything became clear!!

Kopplex

sorry but not sorry ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) https://i.imgur.com/FhJM7vO.jpg

wait what? "Eren Jaeger is not my enemy" is literally what he is saying tho. Unless we now want translators to take liberties and translate the lines not based on what is been said but based on what they think they understand, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that translation. In my opinion, even in English "Eren Jaeger is not my enemy" followed by "Someone else comes first" is enough to understand what Zeke meant when he said that.

Isayama: “The basic idea of the title is that ‘[The sky is] bright even in a dark night.’ Bright, like the sun does not set. In other words… Erwin’s death means the sun has set. But in fact, it still feels like the ‘Sun’ never sets. The title sort of contains this message.”

Squidlord

So Bert's Colossal had ears because he enjoyed hearing the screams of his victims? I highly doubt it. That "theory" is retarded.

Another great reaction for another great episode!

Vax Merstappen

in the last few episodes most the haunting shots are associated with Eren. How about his expression when he uses Galliard as a nutcracker and the music in the background. Real Antagonist vibes. It is really fascinating to see how his character evolved since Day 1 until he reached this state. Just a boy who wanted to be free became this chaotic presence, who is feared by many. Not something you see with most protagonists.

Vax Merstappen

When the info card showed up mid ep I was like: wait what tf we still got so much left? Cause so many things happened until that point. Btw Can we get your ranking on the characters in the near future? The new characters like Magath and Pieck are climbing the ladder, but I'm only sure about my no.1 which is still Erwin Smith.

Translation is an art, if you translate everything literally you’ll have a very poor translation. The comment section from a reaction mashup for this episode translated to Japanese was something along the lines of “Eren Jaeger is not my enemy” for foreigners - “Wait! What?”. For Japanese people “Damn he’s disrespecting Eren like that?”. The following sentence does clear up a bit, but still lacks the nuance. A couple bilingual Japanese people then explained the same thing I explained here to other Japanese viewers.

Kopplex

That is true, but I feel like people nowadays just like to complain. When the translator is being too literal -> they complain. When the translator is taking some liberties -> they also complain. Hell, even when the translator did actually a decent job and found a good middle ground -> some will still complain. And something I noticed is that in most cases these people say so while clearly lacking any actual knowledge about the language, they just read a comment in some forums or videos stating that "x line is wrongly translated", and that's it... As someone who did some Japanese translation work in the past (although not to English, but to French) I genuinely don't see any problem with the way that line was translated and I would have most likely translated it the same way if I were the one working on the episode. Taking way too many liberties and taking the risk of twisting the author's words is definitely worse than just being too literal.

S1-S3 are basically a gritty villain origin story. Joker who?

Holy shit that's big brain. I didn't realize that until now

"All it takes is one bad day. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.” That's Eren Now.

Aras Paty

Great and deep discussion has always. I really enjoy your speculation about Zeke and Eren plan. It's going to interesting watching the next episodes and how you interpret those events.

Shiro

Great reaction as always Im! Zeke's entry was reminiscent of Dina's entry in S2E11 of the smiling titan...truly like mother, like son. Also, you speculated about Zeke not telling Marley about ODM gear that he picked from Mike, but even if Zeke does not tell Marley, Reiner and Pieck can report as they have seen it in action, no?

Anonymous

Back in the forest of giant trees, Eren tells Annie that he is going to rip her apart and eat her. His voice acting and the look on his titan's face clearly frames this as him not being in the right state of mind after the loss of the Levi squad. Now, years later, Eren is just calmly and casually ripping people apart and eating them since it meets his goals. As Im mentions, certainly not a "hero moment" - though I have seen others cheer Eren on as he de-arms Galliard and gulps down his Tyburade. Regardless, great reaction as always.

FILMBuFF

Oh yeh, I’m sure they would have reported back about the ODM gear (though I don’t know if Reiner reported about his personal experiences with it, and how it functions, they haven’t made that clear. He wasn’t that same Pro Marley Reiner upon his return to Liberio) I was speculating about the actual physical ODM gear Zeke acquired from Miche, and whether he presented it to the Marley military for research purposes.

石原 悟

Finally, a fellow translator appeared😂 Regarding the line, I would've translated it literally. The secondary meaning of "he's no match for me" is what Zeke wanted the Marlean comrades to hear, while he most likely was talking to Scouts reassuring them that he's with the plan, and doesn't intend on fighting Eren. It's too much to expect non natives to pick up on that, so I would've went on literal path. Since the interpretation is open even for us. Those who took it literally are correct. Those who took it as disrespect are correct. Too bad English just doesn't have equivalent phrase with same exact double meaning. Can't be helped.

Sarah S

You also mentioned a few times that there’s something about this episode that feels stylistically standout in the way that some of the shots are drawn. I think it’s the season director, Yuichiro Hayashi, having more input than usual on this one. He’s been swamped this season and only being able to storyboard without directing a single episode yet. His style is really something else when he’s given time, if you ever watch Dorohedoro or his other shows. He helped storyboard this one and I think the *big* shots feel like him, like the “undercover Titan” bit from Door of Hope with the God of Destruction shots, that felt like him.

Cameron Mason

It's remarkable how dense people can be when it comes to someone they are attached to. I doubt Eren would even see himself as the hero any more, he's said as much.
