It doesn't matter if she's a female or no, but they never established it in the anime, it's always referred as "Rem" or "Shinigami". About the rest of the episode, beautiful, unfortunately i can't speak without spoiling something, that's the worst part of Death Note, every piece is important and can't say anything without spoiling.

I dont even now if shinigamis have genders. And I don't know if you know but shinigami are known creatures in the Japanese culture. Its litteraly the "death god" in shinto.

I’d say Rem is supposed to be considered more female than male just based on appearance and voice

Yeah she is a female shinigami officially
