Once Ariana and Alexis got Alice to a room to rest, it took them several minutes to get her to calm down. The emotional trauma would be there for a while. For now all they could do was stay by her side.

“Alice, are you hurt anywhere?” Alexis asked, examining Alice’s body for any visible cuts or bruises.

“I’m, sniff, fine,” Alice said, as Ariana helped her wipe her runny nose. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Ariana said, giving her daughter a reassuring smile. “I’m been through worse. That old fart just caught me by surprise. It’s hard to believe that I’m even related to such a brute.”

“Mother,” Alexis said looking at her mother with pity in her eyes. No one expect this to happen, and Ariana was probably more distressed than she looked, but she had to remain strong for Alice.

“It’s alright, after today though I could sure use one hell of a drink,” Ariana said, sitting down between Alice and Alexis.

“Thank you,” Alice said as she held Ariana’s hand. “No one has ever stood up for me like that before.”

Despite what Ariana tried to do to Alice her intentions while misguided were to help her daughter. Alice understood this the moment that Ariana took a punch for her. She saw how much she love d her, a girl that she adopted.

Ariana didn’t have to stand up for Alice, but it meant the world to her that she did. She actually felt for the first time in a long while the warmth of a mothers love. Something that she never thought that she would be able to experience again.

“No matter what happens the both of you are my children, regardless of your blood,” Ariana said, embracing the both of them in her arms.

“Mom I-”

“It’s alright I know,” Ariana said to Alexis and then Alice. “This summer vacation of yours has only just begun and we’ve already gone through way too much. How about tomorrow we have a tea party? It will be nice and relaxing, just us girls.”

“I would like that,” said Alexis with a smile.

“Same,” Alice said, nervously looking up at her mother. “Thank you mommy, I love you. I promise that I’ll do my best to live up to your expectations.”

“It’s alright. You don’t have to push yourself to do that. It will come in time; there’s no use forcing it like I did before. For now just live your life as you had before. I promise that seeing you like that will bring me the greatest amount of joy.”

Ariana had learned from her mistakes, and Alice had forgiven her. While the road to their recovery will take some time, they are finally going in the right direction to build their mother and daughter relationship.
