I'm glad you enjoyed it! Before this I'd only watched with subs once, but my family had a copy of the english dub that I would watch at least once a week growing up. I definitely understand what you mean, watching it has a different feeling to it as an adult vs as a child. If I was to give recommendations for movies to watch next, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbour Totoro and Secret World of Arrietty are my favorites. All of the movies are amazing though, there is no wrong choice for what to watch next.

Howel’s moving castle has got to be my fav of the ghibli movies with princess mononoke and Kiki’s Delivery Service joint second (the two are have very different tones so they’re in second place for different reasons). Anime always makes food look so good, although that sene with the parents stuffing their faces always puts me off. The radish spirit is such a dope dude, taking her up the elevator and then seeing him celebrating her wins each time too. It was kind of a shocker when no face suddenly ate the frog guy! I’m glad the people no face ate didn’t die and no face went back to being nice again. Studio ghibli has a way of making films without any real bad guys, like yeah yubaba is a nasty lady who puts profit above her workers but you see how she has a loving side with her baby. Characters tend to be very grey zone, which is cool since most films and shows were very much black and white characters at the time. Also I love that there are so many awesome, strong female characters in their movies. Yeah somehow the lamp is rather endearing. Politeness will always be cute. I love how they make a hair band for her and the growth of the baby’s personality is awesome. It’s a great representation of how sheltered rich kids can change for the better once they get a reality check. And also a good example of how being overprotective of your kids can be detrimental to their growth as a person. I think Chihiro really endeared herself to the other workers after saving three of them from no face so it was nice to see them all on her side at the end there. I’m kind of annoyed at the parents and that they didn’t have any character growth, I mean it was their greed, impatience and entitlement that landed them there in the first place, plus the fact that they were brushing their child’s discomfort off like it was nothing is super irritating to me. So when they were back as humans and blaming chihiro for wondering off and telling her to hurry up cause the movers would be at their house…. just…. ugh…. You were the ones that wondered off and stuffed your faces in the first place! Sigh, anywho at the end there all I thought was… yeah that moving truck as been to you house and left already cause you been in thee for a while! Also wondering if there are missing posters for them and stuff. And how many other times people have gone missing in the area 👀! Woof long comment haha oh well can’t wait to watch the other movies with you, I’d love to see them from a first time viewers perspective.

Spirited Away and Nausicaa are my favorites! And Princess Mononoke is close too!

It always hits so hard to Kumaji has been hoarding these train tickets for 40 yrs. And he just gave them to Chihiro, a whole stranger who he's done nothing but help, just like that. Like Lin says her biggest dream is to get out of the bathhouse and get to those houses/cities where the train goes and just doesn't have a way to get there. I assume the train tickets then are super valuable. And he's managed to get hold of a few, hoarded for 40 yrs, and gave them away out of kindness.

I love having watched it as a kid, and then as a teen, and then again and again. (And when I watched it first all I remember was being terrified constantly.) Because somehow it grows with you so well. Everytime you watch it, you're able to get more out of it and understand more and more of the messages and themes from Miyazaki's own life and thoughts that he's imbued into the story. I feel like so many of Miyazaki's movies are so masterful because he's really put in a lot of his own thoughts and beliefs into his works. So they're amazing fun stories to watch when you're little, but you continue to feel the magic as an adult and simultaneously start to understand more of the deeper layers bc you've also lived more life.

I watched this and Princess Mononoke when I was maybe 8? I was hella traumatized 😅 but Princess Mononoke is still one of my favorite movies of all time. I can't wait to watch more Studio Ghibli movies with you and for you to experience the beauty that is the animation and story telling in every one
