Well, I got my answer - in no uncertain terms - as to whether or not Lord Sylas is someone I could root for!

Oh man, you got your first glimpse of No Mercy Percy, that's the nickname the community gave him. This is defiantly only the start, and you'll see why that nickname suits him. His voice actor Taliesin Jaffe made the line you fool now you soul is forfeit just as menacing as when he first did it on stream. You might actually know him from Mr. Mom, as the boy with the woobie, and She's the sheriff. Sylas defiantly sucks, and just wait you'll hate him and Delilah even more than you already do.

The spell Sylas used on the king was probably a charm spell, it's actually quite common, and makes the person affected consider the caster a good friend. However it usually only lasts about an hour so it might have been a more powerful version or something considering how strong Sylas is. The DM (Dungeon Master) can take some creative license with rules in favor of the narrative of their game. Fun fact, the voice actor of Sylas is Matt Mercer, he is the guy who was the DM of the game that this series is based on. He voices a ton of random side characters in this series including Trinket the bear, the old guy who asked Scanlan about the privy, some of the guards etc.

Sylas and Delilah Briarwood are some of the greatest villains that Vox Machina ever faced in the Critical Role Podcast. They're actual something of a favourite among fans. Because as villains they're rather unusual as a husband and wife duo. That genuinely love each other, rather than trying to stab each other in the back or just being a marriage of convenience. If they weren't evil, family murdering sociopaths they'd be considered relationship goals.

Welcome to the introduction of No Mercy Percy, our favorite murder boy. We're also getting to see a lot of tiny details throughout the episodes that love to foreshadow things, theres gonna be a lot of those scattered throughout the show. An example here is that when Sylas and Delilah were walking to their room, they walked past a mirror where you could see Delilah's reflection, but not Sylas', nice little touch to confirm he doesn't just have a hypnotic gaze but is in fact a vampire. This also means he's vulnerable to Pike's holy attacks, which is why as soon as they realized shes a cleric they focused on taking her out. There were also foreshadowing details during the Brimscythe episodes, but telling you about those might spoil things so i'll keep hush hush for now
