Yeah, Shirou wants to commit suicide and the only way he thinks he can do it is by murdering himself... As he is immortal (Even if Archer dies, he gets pulled back and put in even more fights... Forever. He might just be the single most experienced combatant in this war)

To understand Archer, you need to understand Shirou's idealism, he wants to save everyone, not just most people, and the only person he's willing to sacrifice himself (that's his idea of being a hero of justice). So, Archer Emiya did just that, he spent his whole life sacrificing himself for humanity while constantly being used and betrayed by others in the process, but he didn't regret it while alive, and then accepted the offer to become a guardian after his death to save more people. So, he never regretted his decisions while still alive. The regret came afterwards, because as Archer said, saving everyone is impossible, you always have to kill some people to save more (and the people he killed are not always the evil ones, you may have to kill innocent people to save a larger number of innocent people). That goes against the ideal that made him a heroic spirit in the first place (the ideal of saving everyone). He basically sees his whole existence as being built on an impossible lie, and so wants to end it.

Also, do you see why lancer is considered the unluckiest class in the Fate series, so much that it's a meme heh.
