I know we're all different, but damn, that's rough being unable to pick up that gun and splatter that shithead's brains!

Haha I hope you weren't so focused on wanting Makishima dead that you didn't pay attention to him and what he was saying. I think it's really interesting how his psycho pass has always been crystal clear ever since he was a child like he said (so no hacking or anything like you first assumed), and because of that he has explored others and how their minds work to make sense of it. I think he himself knows he's twisted (he had a line in the episode saying his body must be deluding itself), but Sibyl doesn't judge him anyway. His points about free will being stripped away and questioning what a criminal is are very interesting, since pretty much everything (including jobs and your state of mind) is decided by Sibyl, and if Sibyl doesn't judge him, how do we define him a criminal? People have to do what Sibyl tells them in pretty much every turn of their lives.

I was, of course, paying attention to what he said. That's why I switched my curiosity from "hacking" to more of a self-hypnosis state, where he takes control of his own mind, not allowing it to become clouded... I'm not saying that's what he did; just that's where my guess would be now.

Even without the indoctrination of the Sybil system, most people are reluctant to kill unless they undergo training to overcome this reluctance. Also Akane has been brought up in a society where killing under any circumstances will result in you becoming a persona non grata. Someone who's supposed to be destroyed on sight. Now her job is more or less killing people, but she doesn't make that decision. The Sibyl system does, it lifts the level of responsibility and guilt that comes with taking human life. Reducing it more or less to simply pulling a trigger. Then you take into account she's clearly not trained in the use of firearms. (I mean come on, why wouldn't you hold the gun in both hands?) Add to that a little range, moral conflict, general stress, potentially hitting Yuki instead of Makashima and it's easy to figure out how she missed.

No doubt; I get her issues. It just frustrates me seeing her unable to overcome them and wax that scumbag!

Real talk that scene with Makishima and Akane is pure god damn art. The sibyl system is like a helicopter parent, choosing people's jobs, homes and indirectly who they get to see in their day to day lives. Makishima not being able to be shot with the dominator totally removes Sibyl from the equation, and Akane just crumbles. She's probably never had to go against the system in her life, and even when given a clear path and opportunity to solve the problem, she can't even seem to comprehend it. Makishima is an evil asshole, and one of the most fucked up antagonists, but he made his point and then proved it.

And I know you probably get all this, this scene is just one of my favourites in any anime and I just wanted to gush, lol

Ah yes. One of my favourite scenes from any anime. The setting, the two main characters, the dialogue, even just the tone of it. It's gone to some lengths to ensure we understand the way the Sibyl System operates and governs, and here we see it become about as useful as as liquorice parachute ties, along with yet another brilliant, fascinating speech from Makishima. I always found the antagonists, if that's the word, in this to be both highly interesting and compelling, aaaand just a wee bit batshit lol
