The prisoners had no faith in a brighter future. If they die now, then the long lasting suffering they've endured for years will end. Its not that they disliked Luffy or wanted to be against him, its that years of physical and psychological oppression have made them hopeless, scared, and yearn for an end to the suffering. I'll give Queen props here, tying up Big Mom and tranquilizing her was smart. Now one has to wonder what Kaido will do once she's laid before his feet.

This seems to be a bit of a recurring topic, so i think it's worth talking about. About the animal kingdom pirate underlings still going at Luffy, now i do wanna start off by saying yes, they clearly do have a bit of the disposable grunt syndrome that a lot of nameless anime characters have. However you need to realize, these aren't rag tag just-got-the-job-yesterday marines, Kaido's pirate group is considered one of the strongest there is, and as such even the non-devil fruit members are stronger than most. Secondary to that, anyone who would take Luffy down would more than likely get an opportunity to get their own SMILE, not to mention a promotion, which inside a group that only cares about strength like the animal kingdom pirates is everything. And now add to all of that the comparison of the grunts vs Luffy and Luffy vs Big Mom. Luffy has about as much chance against Big Mom as the grunts have against Luffy, yet he still goes at it over and over, whether out of stupidity or bravado is a whole different debate. Luffy has had his ass kicked by both Mom and Kaido, yet he still tries again so that he could become stronger. Seeing him do that you can very hardly blame the grunts for taking any opportunity they can to get the one over on him when taking Luffy down would mean them getting stronger, so what if a couple dozen of their members get knocked out first, doesn't mean you stop trying when you're a pirate in the New World. It's the same motivation on both sides, you're just only ever seeing it from Luffy's perspective.

Yeah it went over Curtis' head a little bit with Ashura at first too. These are people who have been fighting for 20 years, people who have lost families and friends, and then even lost their chance at revenge with the Akazaya Nine disappearing. Seeing some random dude from overseas beating up a couple dozen of Kaido's underlings and then getting chased around Udon like a puppy by another Emperor isn't going to suddenly erase all that. It'll take some serious talk no jutsu to bring them back around
