after seeing Tohru's backstory it makes even more sense now why she took issue with people worshipping Elma in the past, Tohru wanted freedom, the ability to stand on her own and make her choices, that's why she hated people worshipping and blindly obeying their worlds god at least in part, so when she saw Elma started being fine with people blindly worshipping her she took issue with it, it went against everything she grew up believing in.
