There are 2 OVAs that couldn't really be put into the anime but that are taken from the sourcematerial. Watching those might be worth it! I dont know how far along you are but do give that a thought. You don't have too watch them to get the rest of the story but they do show us some interesting scenarios.

The way I'm interpreting it is Fuko constantly still hangs out with the group even thought they cant see her. And occasionally she's able to make herself appear in front of them for a short while even if they don't quite remember who she is because the bonds she made with them is strong enough.
