Saejima didn't think this through, if I was running from the Yakuza, Hawaii is the last place I'd go. Outside of Japan itself, Hawaii is a hotspot for Yakuza activity. There's a significant Japanese population in Hawaii (hell it's the only place in the States where Japanese immigrants weren't interned during WW2) and it's also a popular destination for Japanese tourists. So it's a natural base of of operations for Yakuza activity. There was a time when it was the starting point for smuggling handguns from America to Japan. Before the Japanese laws changed making firearm possession a crime that would net you at least 3 to life in prison.

I think that was the point. The guy’s an idiot and doesn’t think things through. If the Yakuza was really after him, he’d never even make it to Hawaii. They’d almost certainly catch him before he left Japan, so it’s a moot point.

I'm surprised you were ripping on saejima so much through the whole episode, saejima is a great character because him and onizuka are pretty much the same person. Their characters parallel each other perfect.
