Kanji hieroglyphs consist of one or more elements called radicals. For example, you have one-radical hieroglyphs 日 (day) and 寺 (temple). Put these radicals together and you get 時 (time). Monogatari author loves to play with Japanese language, sometimes it even goes over heads of Japanese readers.
