I don't think a killer instinct is necessary in order to win fights, but many fighters still have one. In a documentary about the brothers, Wladimir Klitschko said that when he knocked his opponent down in his debut match (I think), he thought something along the lines of "stay down or I'll kill you". Of course, his opponent did get up and ended up getting demolished a few seconds after that, but yeah... Not unusual for people in fighting sports to have one but not a necessity, I would say.

Yea, I don't think Mashiba saying to stay down forever means that he hopes Ippo is dead, more like "don't get up so I don't have to keep on fighting". Anyway, been so long since I've seen this but considering the anime is over 20 years old now I'm still impressed with how good the animation is. The studio madhouse that does it is one of the top studios when it comes to animation when they really put effort in.

Absolutely true. I've personally known fighters who are in the game because the love the feeling of physically dominating someone and enjoy destroying an opponent in the ring. I've also known fighters who were in it simply for the love of competition and saw opponents in much the same manner as I imagine a chess champion would. :-)

WHOLESOME DEUS

Dammit now I gotta wait till Monday for more.

Maybe, but I would disagree. When you add the word "forever", it's kinda clear that the intention goes beyond just wanting to win the fight.

Ippo’s basic thoughts at this point in the match were “Which one will last longer, your torn muscles in the left arm or the shattered bones in my right hand? Either way, one of us are getting a K.O.”
