Actually your theory at the end is spot-on. I've noticed you have a slight habit of making a fairly-accurate guess and then saying it can't be right, but you're pretty good at predictions. I don't really consider this a spoiler because Curtis already guessed it.

@Curtis, not sure if you picked it up, but Naofumi saw Raphtalia as a child still due to his trauma (also why he couldn't taste food). So that's why he thought everyone was weird for calling her a beauty. That's why he was surprised at her appearance after she hugs him after the match, and why he's able to taste food again, since he overcame his trauma. It's a big vague in the anime but the novel explains it more clearly.

Damn Shield Hero is a great series, but it's hard to rewatch all those moments where Naofumi gets treated like crap. It punches you even worse in the feels when you know that it's coming. Also Motoyasu had a rough day, he gets kicked in the crotch by a bird the size of a horse and then is expected to run a three lap horse race? Forget bruising that dude's gonna be in chronic pain for the rest of his life.

The Abyssal Drink

Now that the Curse Series of shield has been revealed I must say this. Not a spoiler, just reasonable conjecture. The Curse Series is just another shield (obviously) and it's fueled by his hatred, hence why the requirements were met. The red lines on his face, the flames on his shield, and the darkness surrounding him marks the shields arrival, but Raphtalia's kindness stops it from appearing and saves Naofumi like he saved her without him realizing it. In the opening (this first one) there's a moment where the shield is active but Raphtalia hugs Naofumi from behind and stops him from unleashing it and it always chokes me up as I feel many people can relate to that. When it feels like the whole world is against you no matter how much you want to be happy and succeed in life you just want to rage out and destroy everything around you, but you have to realize that there are people that care deeply for you because your existence has saved them before and they want the same for you. I've had moments like Naofumi where I just want to lose control and the only thing keeping me grounded is the hope for a future where I can be happy. Life can suck a lot (especially 2020), but things can always get better if we push through and let people help us. Trust is hard, but when you find someone you can trust with your life it's one of the best feelings in the world. Anyway. Rant over. I love this show. Also, Filo is adorable.

Hey Curtis. Just wanted to introduce myself as a new Patreon. I’ve always love watching your reactions on YouTube so I started being a patron this month. Looking forward to more of these as we go. That said, this series is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow starting out because of how much it makes you want to loath the villains. So I guess they’ve succeeded in making them deplorable! :D Anyway, can’t wait to see more of these.

Just one thing i've not seen people point out yet, in the duel Naofumi was level 21, while Motoyasu was level 43. So much for a fair and square duel.

No kidding lads just watching that bitch myne pisses me off. It even makes my stomach cramp a little just watching her speak. And this is after I already watched it. The very first time I watched shield hero I was screaming "fuck you bitch!" Or "shut the fuck up bitch!" Every fucking time I saw her appear. It came to the point where my youngest kid asked me "pops why are you so pissed? "I would say it's because of that red headed kushina wannabe fucking twat waffle myne!" She would say "if she pisses you off so much why do you continue watching that anime knowing she will appear from time to time?" And I would say "because your pops is a masochist who likes to get pissed off at fictional characters! Also I want to see that bitch myne getting what she deserves" No kidding every month (or week) that a new episode came out once the episode was done she would have a cup of my favorite tea to calm me down before I got a heart attack of anger. Thankfully that hatred has subsided just a little, it's still there but just not as intense. Also fuck the other three heroes and asshole king.
